By the time they're contenders again he'll be a free agent. Do you think they'd pay what it would cost then? He's a tradable asset that could help with the rebuild. Holding on to unnecessary pieces like him can turn a 2 year rebuild into a 5 year rebuild.

Closers are important, but very replaceable. Having $42 million tied up in a closer on a 70 win team is like putting new rims on a car with 250,000 miles on it. He could be turned in to 2-3 good prospects and help a lot with the rebuild or he could keep saving 45 of their 75 wins.
