Bob Beatty interview: Tough journey to the Title

Featured Replies

I called them the "Big Green Monster" in my post and I NEVER said championships fall into their laps. I KNOW the kids and coaches work very hard to get where they are. When you're at the top of the heap consistantly for so long, and the other teams are looking up from below, they are the "Big Green Monster" respectfully saying.

I was just trying to convey an overview from many different sources of how many feel about Trinity. By no means was I trying to insinuate anything negative about you. I'm sorry if it came across that way. My bad.

Beatty is a terrific coach. His attitude in the article seemed genuine.

Questions for Trinity folks:

1. There was rumor in a thread earlier in the year that Beatty might be looking to move on, maybe to Alabama? Is that anything more than speculation?

2. With all of his success, could you see him moving into the college ranks at any point?

If a high school job paying much more money presents itself, he would probably take it. I believe college is out. No man his age wants to be a recruiter and that is usually how college careers begin unless you are named Gerry Faust! :lol2: Many jobs in the southern states do not include mandatory teaching positions. If you are the head football coach. That is it. That could be appealing........

I had no idea the Bishop Gorman job was open! I wonder........

I also cannot fathom a college (UNLV) turning over their program to a high school head coach. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Parts 2 and 3 of the series are available at the link posted above.

I didn't see part 3. Can you post a link?

The link above works. They are labeled as Donald Brooks and Donald Brooks Part 11. Look at the bottom of the page on the Beatty portion.

Got it.

Great articles .................thanks for sharing. A real special place with special people

I think it depends on how old Beatty is (I am not sure) and how long he plans to stay in coaching. I understand the thinking that he has nothing else to prove and has no family keeping him in Louisville also.

Several years ago a school from Georgia (their name escapes me) tried tooth and nail to get him. He never said it outloud but I think he was tempted but decided to stay. In terms of moving on to college, not sure. I don't know if a college would bring him on as a head coach and being a head coach as long as he has and then going back as a OC would be difficult I guess.

I doubt that Coach Beatty will leave Trinity til he wishes to retire. I know he gets offers, has interviews, thinks things over, but, as he said at football get-together in Feb 2006 (I think), where else would he go, where else would he be in a better situation? At Trinity the personal & academic standards are demanding, disciplinary problems are treated strictly, and maybe most of all, the most important thing to me at least as a retired college prof, is that the parents are behind the school, behind their sons, and behind administration and faculty. Beatty talked about that in one of these articles. He said the team succeeded first of all because the parents bought into the rugged schedule, helped team and coaches get through the many disappointments, and always had hope.

Not a problem. I thought it was a fun compliment. Another fond name used at the school for the teams is Gang Green.

Maybe not "Big Green Monster", maybe I should post "Big Green Shamrock".

I like Big Green Monster, I like the association with the left field wall at Fenwick Park. Aside from Gang Green, used around the school, I like to call a Trinity team T. Rox. It's just fun.

I beg to differ....

9 years ago.... Gus Malzahan (Auburn) was the Head Coach at Springdale Arkansas.

14 years ago.... Art Briles (Baylor) was head coach at Stephenson High School Texas

9 years ago..Hugh Freeze (Ole Miss) was head coach at Briarcrest High school coaching Michael Oehr

5 years ago... Chad Morris (SMU Head Coach) was the head coach at Lake Travis High School Texas

Now..... Tony Sanchez (UNLV) was the head coach at Bishop Gorman

Those coaches have won state titles. Let's see Malzahan played for the Nat. Title last year, Briles was a vote away from being in the Final 4 this year, Freeze beat Alabama this year, Chad Morris is new SMU head coach.

I think high school coaches can better prepare players then college or NFL coaches. Here's why:

A high school coach, when a player is injured, has to turn to that 185lb guard to play just like his 6'2 235 lb guard or they MAY struggle. He also has to be smart during practice on how much contact is being used. In high school there is some drop off in the depth. Some places can go 2 deep or posiibly 3 deep in spots. Most places, EVEN platooning is 1 deep.

Another Reason: This is something that is proven. If you watch football today and what the NFL is doing look no further then your local high school. If you see what some colleges are doing then look no further then you local high school. FAST PACE TEMPO was invented in high school. NOW WAIT A MINUTE YOU SAY! Yes I know. The Bengals and Bills invented the NO HUDDLE. Yes they did, but the NEVER played this FAST. Alot of the former high school coaches I named above were using their systems in high school. WILDCAT or WILDHOG was invented by Malzahn, NOT DAVID HILL, Zone read with bubbles or some quick game was done by Baylor and still is. I can keep going on. Football is on the RISE, NOT Down. Ideas are coming from high schools, not trickling down from NFL.

AND lastly, why High school coaches are better in my opinion. They can coach or teach their material because they have to during the day.

HAVE A GREAT NIGHT!!!!!!!!1
