Voice of Reason Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 You are going to want to read about this game. We had a very interesting ending. This one looked like you expect most JV games to look. Both teams getting younger players game experience. The play was often hit and miss. There were mistakes made on both sides, mostly though on the Beechwood side. Beechwood is trying out a QB who has never played QB. They have a new center because the player expected to play center is out. That led to some fumbled snaps early on but it got fixed as the game went on. Experience is the best teacher. Unfortunately for Beechwood, the first quarter fumbles and bad snaps set up two Dixie Heights touchdowns. Jose Torres scored on an 11 yard run and then later on a 14 yard run, both scores on the exact same jet sweep play. The novice QB Dalton Everett broke tackles and then sprinted down the sideline for a 54 yard TD run for Beechwood. That gave us the halftime score of Dixie Heights 12 Beechwood 6. Both teams tried 2 point conversions that failed. The second half play was a little more consistent. The mistakes were fewer and the defenses looked better. Dixie did not move the ball very well the second half but Torres broke off a 68 yard TD run. The Tigers grinded out a running dominated drive that ended when a Dixie player wrestled the ball out of Everrett's hands at the 3 yard line as Beechwood appeared ready to score. Beechwood almost got a safety before forcing a 3 and out punt. The Tigers then went on another long drive, this time capped off by a 1 yard TD run by Trevor Soward. That TD happened with 3:36 left in the game and it made the score 18-12. That is when the fun happened. Beechwood tried an onside kick. Dixie's Sheldon High #87 scooped up the ball, broke several tackles and looked headed for a game clinching TD until Beechwood's #25 Grant Birindelli made a TD saving tackle at the 11. The Tigers defense rose to the challenge and stopped Dixie on downs at the 5 with 1:00 to go. On the first play, BW threw a pass about 15 yards down field. The ball hit off the receiver's shoulder pads and floated into the air. A Dixie lineman (who I will not name) had turned and was running toward the receiver when he caught the floating ball. He never broke stride and took off at a sprint to the end zone - to the Beechwood end zone! Yes, he was running the wrong direction. As he ran toward what he thought would be glory, the fans and the Dixie sideline began yelling for him to turn around. But you know how it is in a moment like that in a game - you just don't hear anything but noise. As he crossed the 50, there was a Beechwood player (who I will not name) running with him, who seemed to know the Dixie player was running the wrong way, but wasn't sure what to do. As he ran about 10 yards with the Dixie player, he appeared to decide to try and perhaps get the ball from the player, or maybe instinct took over and he just tackled him. Regardless, the Dixie player went down at the 35 and that is how this game ended. What if the player hadn't been tackled? Would he have finally heard the yells and stopped short of the Beechwood goal line? Would he have crossed the goal and dropped the ball, or perhaps looked to toss it to the ref? I am happy for the young man that he did get tackled. It sure would have been painful to lose a game for your team on a play like that. Final score Dixie 18 Beechwood 12
Content1 Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Oh the nicknames will begin: One Way, Wrong Way, BD (bound & determined). Congrats to the JV Colonels on the W!
Bird Bath Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Laugh now but Florida likes guys that run the wrong way or block their own teammates. College might be still in the cards. To funny!
Content1 Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 I forgot....."One Direction" the chicks may dig that one!
FanofMany Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Sorry I missed that final play. Dixie's first two scoring drives started inside the Beechwood 15 yd line because of the fumbles. I thought the Dixie QB had some nice short passes during the game. that help them move the ball. I realize Beechwood's varsity kicker is a sophomore but it bothers me that they didn't have a true kicker for this JV game. Bring up the freshman kicker to get experience. What happens if the varsity kicker gets hurt, becomes ineligible or leaves the program?
Voice of Reason Posted September 9, 2014 Author Posted September 9, 2014 If only that final play had played out further. Then there really would have been some stories to tell. I am glad the Tigers hung in there and played with the Colonels. I thought this might be a bigger margin of victory for the Colonels after what happened last Friday.
BillyBob1967 Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Oh the nicknames will begin: One Way, Wrong Way, BD (bound & determined). Congrats to the JV Colonels on the W! A friend of mine was saying he was hearing from some people at this game that this player was a special needs player, any truth to this? Sounds like the young man made a good play and got confused, give this young man a break if this is true, gee whiz.

BillyBob1967 Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Confirmed, shame on you all, for wanting to nickname a special needs player from Dixie because of a mistake. Apparently he was doing something he must love to do, play football. Sure it was a mistake, but before you all want to start calling a high school kid a disparaging nickname, look in the mirror. I think each one of you on here who made a snide remark about this young man all owe him an apology. Best of luck to both teams, and the young man who got the INT for Dixie, again congrats on the win Dixie.

Voice/Eye, was this the same big guy that caught several passes during the game?

Knew it was just a matter of time. This is a great kid more than capable of taking some flack and will laugh at himself at the end of the day. Relax gee whiz and give not only the fan base, but teammates and player more credit before we play the "special needs" card. We have all made good plays and responded by traveling in the wrong direction. I think most can identify with that statement and still have a sense of humor??? If not, my sincere apologies to the "softies" out there!
BillyBob1967 Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 How as anyone supposed to know? Voice/Eye, was this the same big guy that caught several passes during the game? You're missing the point, why would anybody ever get on a high school message board and make fun of, call out, nickname a high school player, regardless. This isn't pro sorts, this is in most cases young kids just doing something they like to do, that's all. I just think it's ridicules to say anything in bad taste about any high school athlete, period.

I realize you didn't mean anything bad about your post, but we all need to be positive when it comes to high school kids, just think before you act. How would you feel if this was your son, being called negative nicknames because of something he did in a JV high school football game? Really?
RH1183 Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Anyone stand out for Beechwood? Depth for varsity?
FanofMany Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Anyone stand out for Beechwood? Depth for varsity? Looked like they only had about 19 dressed for the game. Some of the sophs looked okay but they really couldn't do anything significant on varsity. The QB Everett looked tough like his brothers. Linebacker Birindelli could possibly help at LB if they had to. Some of these players are on special teams for varsity. Dixie dressed about 31 players for the game. I would assume they had a few more juniors play the game then Beechwood but don't know that for a fact.
