Conner/Boone County @Boone County

Featured Replies

That's good for both of them and especially good for Ryle. Looks like Ryle will have a much better chance at beating NDA/St. Henry/Cooper. But I still don't understand how Chase Barber could be released after so many head injuries?

I agree with you. Makes no sense.

I think the rumor was started by Bluegrass Preps so people would keep making posts about her:clap:

Good thing this is in a Conner/Boone County thread.

The Barbers are responsible and intelligent people. They won't do anything that would risk Chase's future

What I hate to see is a POY being just a three rotation player. I believe NDA's Heidi Thelen won the last two years and that was a joke. She only played three rotations and sometimes wouldn't impact positively in points at all when she was in. Often times coaches vote for players on reputation alone. Players like Ashley Bush or Morgan Hentz impact the match far greater than a 3 rotation hitter might.

IMO Ashley or Morgan deserve POY regardless of injuries. They are both impact players and leaders on the court who will both go on to amazing college careers.

I do however disagree with your statement that POY shouldn't be a "3 rotation player". In Katie's case she is a middle and more often than not they don't play all the way around due to the huge amount of blocking and movement required for that position. (Normally the libero goes in for the middle.) When Katie is out of the game, there is a noticeable decline in their scoring and part of Coopers problem is she could possibly get stuck on the bench. Katie is quite capable of playing back row and has been recently due to some passing issues in their back row. In the 4-5 matches I have seen her play, she has had between 15-20 kills every match - with multiple serving aces, digs and blocks. I would say that she makes a huge impact when she is on the court. Cooper has also been using her to attack out I the back row as well which has given them another weapon in their offense.

I honestly don't think she is POY material this year, but as a soph I think you may see her name at the top of a lot of lists in the future. IMO it will be Katie and Haley Bush as the standout players in this age group in the future.

I have seen Katie play in the back row on a very good NKYVC team so not sure why she wouldn't do it in high school on a lesser talented team. She can attack from back row very effectively and they wouldn't lose much defensively. But, I am not the coach....just seems like it would make Cooper a better team, especially with the fall off in scoring when Katie is on the bench. Frankly, Katie is very undersized for a college middle so she will probably move to a L1/L2 position and will be expected to play back row. Hope she can get some experience. She is a great athlete.

As for players receiving POY honors when they are hurt...I have a problem with this. How can they be judged on contributions to a team if they don't even participate? Players should not get these awards based on reputation or hype, they should get the awards on what they actually do on the court during the season in question (not club season or last year's season, the current season).

For example, last year, Heidi Thelen received the award and, statistically, she didn't lead NDA in any offensive categories, Morgan Hentz did. Heidi also played only front row. Morgan's offensive contribution coupled with her back row play made her much more of a POY candidate than Thelen. How is it that Morgan was NDA team MVP at the end of the season banquet, yet Thelen was POY of the Region? Oh yea...Thelen was going to Penn State...let's all vote for her....

Bottom line is the coaches/AD who vote for these awards need to pay attention and they don't. It's the same with the Coach's polls and most other "Teams"--- all lack integrity if those voting don't pay attention.

If a player deserves the award they should get it, not matter if they are a freshman, soph or whatever, if the player is the best player, coaches should be able to nominate and support the vote, even if they were hurt due to injury, I don't think you should penalize a player due to an injury, the best player should get the award if you wan to keep the integrity of it, imo. I realize it is unfortunate that many coaches, ad, and whoever casts votes are unaware of the better players for the simple fact they may not have seen them play.

I agree the best player should get awards. To clarify what I meant was if all things are equal, I would give the nod to the Senior.

You and I disagree that injured players should be eligible for awards. To be eligible you must participate. POY and other awards should be based on actual play not previous season, club, hype, reputation or college attending.

I agree that a player should contribute to be named POY, just done penalize a player that's missed some games due to an injury, I agree with you totally that the POY should be based on the current season, and that's why I think the best player should get the award, even if they only play 4-6 weeks in the season, if they deserve it.

I hate to say it, but I think we are on the same page.

Don't hate to say it. You are in good company!!

Agree re injured players. Just thought you were saying if they sat out the whole season they should still be eligible. Here's to my pick, A Bush, getting back on the court soon.

I apologize for my post late last night, I didn't phrase it very well! Too late for an old bird to be on a computer! Anyway, I actually do agree with you! Shocker! In my head I was thinking that Ashley will be back soon and still has a lot of regular season and regionals/state to participate in! She shouldn't be penalized for not playing at the beginning of the year because of an injury. It's going to be a tough decision for "whomever" does the voting on this one! Both of these kids are amazing players, and more importantly awesome young adults with great families too!

I hope so. Chase is a great athlete and I wish the best for her. No one wants to see her unable to play volleyball again. She has great potential to play college volleyball and I hope she will remain injury free for the remainder of her career.

Sadly, there are some players out there who play excellently in every position, but, if they don't play for a "winning" powerhouse team, they are barely acknowledged by NKY coaches or anyone in forums such as this. Likewise, many teams have their "token" photographers that copy everything a team does to the news stations. It causes more exposure, but, it doesn't change or impact stats.

It's more about the programs/teams than it is about the players. A great player, however, can be noticed by college coaches and that's what really counts. It doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks. ;)

Disagree about back row. She is a hard hitter, but, I personally know players on teams who told me they consistently serve and hit to her when she is in back row (weak link) because the vast majority of the time, that team gets the point. There is so much room to grow and being a hard hitter is only one dimension of the game of volleyball.

Also, attitude on and off the court should be an important factor, and for some reason, in high school, it doesn't seem to matter to many of the coaches, for play time. I know college coaches would much rather have players who don't show their attitudes all over the court.

A great player, however, can be noticed by college coaches and that's what really counts. It doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks. ;)

Amen!

I agree that there are excellent players on other teams that deserve some recognition. They may not play for a "powerhouse" team or a serious POY candidate but still deserve to be mentioned!! A few that stick out in my head are Borders from Boone, Bolter from Conner, Franxman from Scott, Ginter from Highlands & Gray from Campbell County. Each player is a crucial part of their team's success, but you don't seem to hear how great of players they are simply because they don't play for a Top team or Top hitter!! Setters & Liberos are very important positions but when was the last time there was a Libero voted POY?? Just saying!!

This is funny. THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE THESE KIDS GET THEIR DUE!!! Thanks for pointing out these kids. Newspapers and local acknowledgement is dead. These threads and this site provide more acknowledgement than they will get anywhere else. The only drawback is that it has to rely on rabid fanbases and a few afficianados to get any names at all out there. So, if they are not mentioned, it's because they have no champions for them on this site.
