Newport Central Catholic 2014 Softball Awards Banquet

Recommended Posts

Newport Catholic held their annual softball awards banquet last evening, and many thanks to Coach Denny Barnes who had Pompilios cater the event. Freshman Head Coach, Dan Hausfeld, talked about the frosh season and presented the players with their 1st NewCath letter. Coach Barnes then talked about the JV and Varsity teams, and letters and chevrons were handed out. Then it was on to the Varsity team awards, 5 awards were handed out. The two lone seniors, Taylor Burkart and Molly Mertle were also given the Senior Award (every NewCath senior athlete receives this Award/plaque).

Highest Avg. - Michaela Ware.....484 AVG. She led the team in Avg. (31/64 in 18 games), she also led the team in On Base% at .535.

Thoroughbred Award - Molly Mertle.....This award is presented to the player that best exemplifies, student/athlete, consummate team player, & dedication to the program. Molly was tops in all 3 categories.

Leadership Award - Loren Zimmerman.....This season saw a totally different Loren on and off the field, and she stepped up to be the team leader. Quite a few umpires commented to me how much of a difference they saw in Loren this season over the last two.

Versatility Award - Taylor Burkart.....Having played 7 different positions this season, and all 9 positions in her 4 year varsity career. Taylor gave Coach Barnes a sense of peace, knowing she could play any position in the field. She averaged 2 errors a year, and has a career .970 FLD%.

Team MVP - Kristen Schreiber.....This is the 2nd year in a row she has been named Team MVP. She lead the team in hits (34), runs (32), doubles (17), walks (15), slugging % (.651), and tied for lead in RBI's (20). Arguably the best defensive catcher in the region, she threw out 9 of 21 base stealers.

There aren't too many catchers that run to backup 1st base, and appear to get there with the runner!
