Correct but they are not under the same rules as "High School" teams. It makes a big difference. An AAU team can say, you must come up with XXX money or your not on a team, and that number can be high. High School teams can charge a fee but it's the same for all sports, not just one individual team, and that is all they can require.

I was just asking for an opinion based on another sports entity that's thriving and is 100% pay for play. If you are saying that because in high schools all sports have to charge an identical pay for play fee and it may not cover the expenses actually incurred by the different teams I would be more inclined to say that the increasing costs to field a high school team will be a more direct cause of their demise rather then making kids pay a fee to be on the team.

They are just two different animals in my opinon. I will agree with you that more so the rising expenses to field school teams is hurting many districts and several in the near future will be forced to either increase fees (pay to play) or drop the programs due to finances.

That makes no sense to me. For example, football is tremendously more expensive then say cross country.

Because of equality, I have to buy new singlets this year and spend money because its our turn in the rotation. We don't need them, but I have to buy them. If I don't, we can be found in violation of Title IX and the district is all proactive against that. What we need is another wrestling mat, but I can't say "lets save the money towards a new mat instead of singlets that we don't need." If I don't buy singlets (uniforms) then we loose the money and can't buy new ones till all the other teams get new ones. Use it or loose it and don't ask for it later deal.

My school takes Title IX very seriously and we re not on a uniform rotation.

I'm against pay to play. I'm all for fundraising after you are on the team, and I am fine with parents being allowed to pay a set fee in place taking part in the fundraising. But, I'm against kids being denied the opportunity to play based the lack of ability to pay a fee.

 

When I was the President of our JFL, we had one thing that no other league in our area had, we provided everything a player needed to play except cleats and underwear. And, we would find cleats if needed. Other leagues in our area made the players supply all, or part, of their own equipment. We did not want kids to not be able to play because they could not afford to buy equipment, so we provided everything. Yes, it was expensive for the league, but that is what the league was there for, to provide the opportunity for the kids be part of the team.

Since Bingo stopped being used to fund athletics at my school (happily, the same year I took over as head coach), our guys have been "strongly encouraged" to all raise their part toward what was needed to give our program beyond the 'basics' the school would provide.

 

That included Tshirts, 7on7 competitions & weight meet travel costs, camp, feedings before games, & banquet costs. Today it includes hudl.com subscription costs.

 

Those who choose not to fundraise the amount can get their "obligation" (notice, not "requirement") in other ways.

 

Have done that system since 1997--with obligation going from $150 to $250 depending on the needs of that year--and have seen no decrease in numbers (peaked at over 100 in program at Oldham Co, had 70-80 each year at Single-A Pikeville, and had our largest group in last 5 yrs at 125 last year at Ballard.

 

It certainly could "kill the sport," (or at least hurt quality & quantity of players) but to keep that from happening it does require an ENORMOUS amount of organization, work, & holding kids accountable in the off-season and even IN-season by coaches and Booster (parents, basically).

Officials overpaid? They have to drive all over the region, somewhere different every night, only to be yelled at and second guessed by people that don't and won't do the job. Some are bad, yes, but overpaid? Nahhhh. If so, everyone would be doing it.

 

There are some, yes that are paid pretty well for about 3 hours of work and you have to pay 2 or 3 per sport, that is not cheap. I am not saying every sport but ask the ADs how much officials are getting paid and some would be really surprised how much goes out per game.

 

...and maybe I shouldn't have said overpaid but they get paid pretty well according to the AD.
