Sun file photo by James MannFormer George Rogers Clark High School girls volleyball coach Robyn Curry, right, talks with former Lady Cardinal standout Amy Kao during a match two years ago at Norton Gymnasium. Curry stepped down following a five-year tenure and accepted a similar post at Campbell County High School.

Robyn Curry is moving closer to home.

Curry, who spent the past five seasons as girls volleyball coach at George Rogers Clark High School, resigned Friday to take a similar post at Campbell County High School in Alexandria.

“Moving on to another program wasn’t an easy decision for me to make because I care so much about the future of this program and the girls, but it is what is best for my career, so I could’t turn it down,” said Curry an Ohio native. “I would like to thank everyone for their support and the opportunity to be a part of a very special program.”

In her five seasons at the helm, Curry compiled a 93-70 record and guided Clark to an unprecedented four straight district titles from 2009-2012. During that span, the Lady Cardinals compiled a 30-0 record against district opponents. A year ago, Clark finished 13-20 and was runner-up in the district for the first time in Curry’s tenure as coach. Overall, Curry has won 405 games in her 26-year career as a volleyball coach.

Under Curry’s guidance, Clark won 23 games in 2010 and notched 20 victories in 2012.

“I am proud of my accomplishments while at GRC,” she said. “I was very lucky to have coached so many wonderful girls who loved the game of volleyball. It was a challenging job with no established middle school programs until just recently, but with my ability to develop players and their heart and dedication we excelled despite the obstacles.”

Is their any chance that coach Wallace over at Montgomery County, with the shape that Montgomery County is in, takes a look at either Clark County or Estill County coaching positions?

GRC's 40th District only has 3 teams in it - often they only had to win 1 match to be District champs. And in 4 out of the 5 years they were champs, they lost their 1st Regional match against a District runner-up.

I think most would say this is a step down for CC compared to their outgoing coach, who won the Region the last 2 years. I wonder if CC is having problems attracting quality candidates given the turmoil surrounding the school and coaches in other sports.

I seen on the KHSAA school directory that Montgomery County doesn't have a volleyball coach listed, are they looking for a coach also? If so, what happened to Coach Wallace?

Her teaching position was cut.

After the first District Championship in 5 years, Coach Wallace's teaching and coaching contracts were not renewed. Wallace was retaliated against by superintendent Joshua Powell and assistant superintendent Phil Rison because they thought she filed a Title IX complaint against the district last summer (she didn't). See this article for more details:

Sources Confirm Additional Powell Investigations

Athletics are a mess in Montgomery County, just look at the men's basketball program, and everyone knows Phil Rison runs athletics there. The education messes with the superintendent are well documented.

Interesting.
