Michigan High School Team Uses the Hidden Ball Trick

Featured Replies

[h=1]MUST-SEE: MI High School Team Wins Title After Pitcher's Hidden Ball Trick[/h]A perfectly executed hidden ball trick helped land a Michigan high school baseball team a state championship. In the play, which you can watch above, Beal City High School pitcher Ty Rollin faked a pickoff throw to second base, and then the whole team pretended that the ball had gone into center field.

I wonder if the 3rd base coach was fooled?

I can see some 9th region coaches taking notes... Wonder how many are going to try that next year...

Pretty good acting jobs! I'd hate to loose an important game on a play like that though. But stuff like that has always been part of baseball, you just have to pay attention at all times, especially when the opposing team wants to get chatty with you.

Don't mean to threadjack here but back in the early 70s, Reynolds Flynn, head basketball coach of Holmes H.S., had a hell of an under the basket out of bounds play that he would run. Took some good acting and it almost always worked.

I always liked the "barking dog" out of bounds play!

Hold it, do you know the play I'm posting about?

Harrison Cty's Mac Whitaker is a master of teaching this play. Beat Highlands in the 1996 Sectionals

Trailing 2-1 top of 7th, Highlands now head coach Jeremy Baioni leads off the inning with a double. HHS coach decides to run for the Sr shortstop with Soph speedster.

Before Soph enters game, HHS bench coach tells kid "don't forget about the hidden ball pick off play", kid shakes his head ok and enters game.

On the 2nd pitch to next batter HC coach cue's the crowd and HC puts the trick play on, Highlands kid falls for play and takes off for 3rd and is easily thrown out by pitcher. Of course next batter singles and is eventually left stranded game over.

After the game, bench coach is besides himself as he ponders out loud that we were tipped off earlier in the week by a friend that HC pulls this trick on a regular basis and to beware. HHS takes note and goes into detail and demonstration at practice with the kids.

The coach goes to the kid after the game and asks the kid what happened? We went over this trick play at practice on Thurs.

The kid replies, "Coach, I wasn't at practice on Thurs"
