STEVEN TOMPKINS ACCEPTS NEW POSITION

Wednesday, 11 June 2014 15:20

Trinity’s Steven Tompkins is moving to a new role at the request of Athletic Director Rob Saxton.

Tompkins, who has been the head baseball coach the past 12 years, will remain a full-time teacher at the school. He is also taking on the responsibility for overseeing a new leadership program for all Trinity athletic teams. The program focuses on the faith and character development of each student-athlete. A search for Mr. Tompkins’ successor as head baseball coach will soon begin.

Tompkins’ assumption of this new role comes at the same time the school has revised its mission statement, which emphasizes faith and character development.

School President Dr. Rob Mullen stated, “Our most recent strategic-planning work led to the adoption of a new mission statement. With the new statement, we are clearly stating not only what we have been doing as a school but what we aim to do in even more intentional and direct ways. Steven is an excellent choice to lead this effort in our athletic department. He will lead a unique and important enhancement to our program.”

Saxton said, “Steven is our best candidate for taking on this role. He already lives the values this program seeks to impart. In this new role, he will assist every head coach with infusing lessons in faith and character development into the playing season. We know sports are a great way to learn lessons about discipline, commitment and teamwork. Steven’s work will help coaches complete the circle.”

Tompkins said, “I appreciate the trust placed in me by Mr. Saxton and Dr. Mullen. This new role is something I treasure. I have been involved in sports all my life. Over the past 12 years as Trinity’s baseball coach, I have worked hard to impact the formation of the young men in our baseball program. To be able to touch every team at Trinity with such an important focus is very meaningful to me. Few of our student-athletes will ever make a living playing sports, but by being exposed to sports at Trinity we hope to better equip them to become even better men. This program assists in that goal.”

Our mission: Trinity is a Catholic, college-preparatory high school, forming men of faith and men of character.

Let me be the 1st to suggest that Sean Duggins would be an excellent replacement. He is outstanding and is a Trinity alum.

Agreed. I guess the trick is to find someone who has the flexible work schedule needed to coach a varsity sport. I do not believe there are any current Trinity teachers who want this position.

Trinity's challenge is not coaching; it is the facilities. They play at a public park on the Ohio River, and the field is awful. By comparison, St X has a year-around turf field with MLB dimensions and a large seating capacity. The good baseball players coming out of middle school will choose St X a majority of the time (unless they have previous ties to Trinity). Tompkins is a nice guy and a good coach, and his successor is facing an uphill battle. X is coming off a state championship and is loaded with underclass talent.

Trinity's former baseball field was lost with the rebuilding of the football statdium and Hayes Kennedy Park has been a (long term) temporary solution until a permanent home can be found. Being in downtown St. Matthews, Trinity is land locked. Finding a nearby plot of land to build a baseball stadium has been sought before the ground was even broken on the new football stadium. I don't recall how many acres are needed for a stadium but ever plot of land anywhere near St. Matthews has been approached. Either the land owners would not sell or the price was so outrageous, you would have thought there was a 5 star building sitting on the land to justify the price. The search continues but the search I would have to assume involves land further and further from Trinity.

Bernie Holkamp would be a natural. Currently an assistant at Male, his knowledge is second to none. I am confident Mr. Saxton has a short list of candidates and will not drag his feet on presenting a choice to Dr. Mullen within two weeks.

As I understand it Trinity recently signed a long term lease a for use of the baseball fields at Thurman Hutchins park. In recent years Trinity has installed a new backstop, bleachers and storage/press box/concession stand on the main field.

I miss those games at Harry Jansing Field. Long way out right field...

I said Hayes Kennedy, I meant Thurman Hutchins, sorry about that.

Trinity should be in position to announce a new head baseball coach within 10 days.

I think Rick Arnold should be a prime candidate for the Trinity job. IIRC, already runs the Catholic Middle School Baseball League and knows a lot.

Any ideas as to which way they are going?

He is a former U of L player and a retired police detective as well. He is very well respected in the local community. But, U of L is looking for two coaches for their baseball program as well.

What coaching experience does he have? I see he is the administrator of Catholic Middle Schools baseball.

He actually coached at St X for a few years. He meets the qualifications or he would not have made the final group.
