Softball fan 14, sorry if you don't like my opinion, but I'm an old school person where only the best of the best; cream of the crop, are recognized. Why don't the coaches just hand out participation or HM certificates to players when practice begins in February? I forgot, this is the generation of kids who get medals, ribbons and trophies regardless of their performance.

 

You're preaching to the wrong crowd here. I agree with you about who gets awards. However, if you don't like the job they are volunteering to do....then you do it.

Congrats to all the girls! However, from an outsider looking in, should the number of players that get HM be limited? Are there any players left who didn't get some recognition?? It honestly reminds me of the first round of the KHSAA Football Playoffs where almost every school gets to go to the playoffs. Gee I remember the days when only the "Top" Players in the district, region or state actually received an award. It just doesn't happen in softball either....

There are over 160 players on varsity rosters in division I in northern Kentucky. Frist team only represents about 5% of all varsity players and with the 13 girls that won honorable mention that is still only a small percentage of all players recognized and I am sure those girls are proud to be honored for their hard work. Dont view it as a participation medal, but that they are recogizing the top players in Northern Kentucky, and 33 players were recognized. Great job girls!

Veritas... Where are you getting "all" the players are nominated? We dress a minimum of 15 players and with JV completed we will dress a couple more than that. So at most 33% of the kids got nominated. Are you really saying that's too many? I didn't count so say its the same for each team and there are ten teams in a division. That's 150 kids playing for 18 spots on the first and second team.. To rate all 150 would be a daunting task. Narrowing it down to rating 50 or less makes much more sense. Again, not all coaches nominate 5 players. So yes there are a lot of players not getting nominated and probably some that should have been nominated but the 5 player limit may have knocked them out.

 

The biggest issue with the whole thing is the timing... The changes this year helped, but to rate and nominate kids in the middle of April is way too early. Heck... Half the teams probably missed quite a few of their games this year and the body of work for the year is not well represented. It becomes a little bit of popularity contest due to a lack of stats. I understand the folks running this thing work hard at it and have to work even harder to get results in. But make the deadline the week before districts gives them two days to review the stats and send in votes and have the awards program the weekend right before districts as it is now. If you dont send in stats with your nominations, they're not nominated. If you don't get your votes in on time, your nominations are void. So nominations with current stats due Saturday, stats sent out Monday night to coaches, votes due Wednesday. Awards ceremony Saturday.
