Newport Central Catholic Freshman....a year in review

Featured Replies

Congrats to Head Coach, Dan Hausfeld and his Newport Catholic Freshman softball team on another successful season. The Freshman Thoroughbreds completed a 17-5 campaign, and like their older counterparts on the Varsity team, saw 10 games washed out by rain. The good thing about this team, is that the majority play from summer travel teams, so this bodes will for the NewCath program in the future.

Congrats to the coaches and the players. :ylsuper:

Great season!!! Cant wait to watch Sam Grause play this summer! Great kid :)

why have a freshman team if there are no freshmen? I know you try to 'feed' into the highschool, but this just seems odd that a school would have a team when the school has no players.

This is Northern Kentucky softball. 8th and 9th graders are varsity, 6th and 7th graders JV (or occasional varsity), 4th and 5th graders make up your freshman class for many. New Cath seems to be ahead of the curve here! Just kidding of course, but not really.

I am not sure if Conner's JV team has many/any frosh. 7th and 8th graders.

What summer travel ball teams do the girls play for? i know that a few play on the Slammers out of Campbell County.

At HHS, almost our entire freshman team is 6th and 7th graders. I think we have 1-3 of the 15 are 8th graders. Other than I think 3 girls (of 14), our entire JV is 7th and 8th graders. On the varsity, we have 3 SRs, 3 JR's, 5 Sophs, 2 fresh, 3 8th and 2 7th. Starting lineup consists of 2 Sr's, 2 Jr's, 4 sophs, and a 7th grader.

It's NKY softball and just about every team is in the same situation. Some teams are a little older, but not much. We are all working on getting better state-wide and having a feeder program (freshman team) is a start. We are working on other things as well. Ideally, we'd all love to have freshman on our freshman teams. That would mean we are all getting pretty good! But for now, Freshman fill JV and varsity spots on a regular basis.

I understand trying to build your sport and team for the future. IMO if there isn't enough interest in the highschool sport to field a team then you just shouldn't field a team. If there was some freshman that were playing and you needed a few younger kids to fill out the team so those freshman had a chance to play, then I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Would you be cool with calling it "sub-JV?"

You can call it whatever you want. I'd call it a jr. high team and play other jr high teams (I'd imagine there are few to none). If not, let the young kids play summer league ball which I'm sure they do.

If the kids want to play and the school sponsors it what does it matter to anyone not involved?

We call it a Freshman team, and play other freshman teams that consist of the same aged girls. However, they are beating up on some teams that consist of 8th graders and true frosh only. :thumb: Jim your school can do the same thing, why are so worried about ours?

Agree with the puppy.

Not worried at all. As I originally stated, I find it odd to have a frosh team that consisted of no frosh or kids in the school. I know why its done. And, I do not mean to take anything away from the purpose of this thread. Congrats to the NCC frosh softball team.

Sorry if I came across somewhat rough.

Since the inception of the NewCath fastpitch team in 2006, the JV team has always consisted of 8th graders to insure we had enough girls to fill the team. The Freshman team consisting of 6th & 7th graders was started in 2011 to increase the interest in fastpitch due to the lack of a summer program in Campbell Co. and because a handful of other high school teams were made up of players the same age. This meant we had to join suit to keep up with everyone else. While some schools play strictly 8th graders and "true" freshman, the level of competition is comparable most of the time.

The bottomline: the summer fastpitch leagues in NKY, minus those who play on "travel" teams, are non existent. Thus, the creation of high school freshman teams consisting of 6th & 7th graders is the BEST option to insure these kids get to play and learn the game before they enter high school.
