This is a very loving cover of "Dancing Queen" by a side project of former Georgia Satellites front man Dan Baird (who is a very funny, very cool guy), called The Yayhoos. Very good in concert.

 

 

 

I am an unabashed fan of ABBA. I get the criticisms, but I just like them. Campiness works when done by really talented people, just like it works with Queen, ELO, The Kinks, Bowie, The Smiths/Morrissey.

 

I wish my old "The Magic of ABBA" K-tel vinyl was in better shape.

I just saw this thread today. I wasn't going to post because I saw that it was started by Jim Schue, who is like a cat hiding in the shadows waiting for the mice to come walking by...... Hate me if you must, but I have always loved ABBA. Like many others in this thread, I am not ashamed of it. Unfortunately, I grew up in a VERY redneck infused small town in Western Kentucky where the saying was "If yer not a Skynyrd fan, yer a queer" (I have substituted yer in place of you're for dramatic effect and because 1)that is how most people pronounced it, and 2)because most people in my town thought contractions were only used by "queers"). While everybody else was driving around blasting "classic rock" like Skynyrd, Foghat, Boston, etc., I was driving around in my Volkswagen (it had a sunroof and was therefore acceptable to be seen in) quietly listening to ABBA and the occasional Air Supply (if I had a lady friend with me). Therefore, I was a very closeted ABBA fan throughout the 70's and into the early 80's. When I started college in '83, I was able to come out of the closet and start blasting ABBA for all the world to hear.

I wouldn't say that I love or hate them.

 

A lot of their big pop hits came out when I was in grade school, and in general it was the girls in my class that were crazy about them along with their obsession with Shaun Cassidy, Leif Garrett, Andy Gibb, Rex Smith, and The Bay City Rollers, and stuff like that.

 

I'd give everything a chance as I've always been a music junkie and wanted to be aware, but none of the pop stuff that I've mentioned above was really my cup of tea, and didn't always fulfill for me what I liked about rock n' roll.

 

I didn't have a definitive type at age 12-14 (1976-1978) as I always tried to stay on top of what was coming out, as well as having a varied past of exposure to stuff from older siblings and neighbors, but at that time I leaned a lot towards stuff like The Beatles, Heart, Foreigner, Led Zeppelin, KISS, ELO, Boston, Fleetwood Mac, Queen, America, Neil Young, Steve Miller, Bad Company, The Eagles, David Bowie, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, The Cars, Rod Stewart etc...

 

Disco was big then too and it took a back seat for me compared to the rock bands I just mentioned, but again I'd stay aware about it just to stay informed. I never thought that the Bee Gees really fit properly into the Disco scene and respected them more so for what they had put out before that era. I found them to be nothing like Disco and thought that it was strange how they became the face of it.

 

I've never been one to just be in one music camp and say that everything else sucked, and I'd never want to step on the toes of other ABBA fans, but in all honestly they always just sorta fell into what I'd considered to be a bit too cheesy for my taste. I don't hate them, but I've never bought anything from them, and I'd have no interest in seeing them live. They just never rocked enough for me, but If they were being piped in while I was out shopping in a store somewhere it's not completely impossible that I'd find myself humming along, and I probably know more words to their songs than I'm even aware.
