Brad Carter resigns at Lexington Christian

Recommended Posts

I dont think that LCA was sneaking up on LexCath @ all honestly from my observations, but I am looking at this from an entire athletic department view rather than just a boys basketball view.

Look at the progress they'd made over the past decade, their success in sports like football and baseball, and the number of kids in their program who are/were playing for top AAU teams and reconsider though. LCA is a school that is ripe for growth in basketball.

They haven't been around very long, but had already begun hosting some big events like the Dunkin' Donuts, had a huge pep rally where guys like Doron Lamb came out to get the crowd going, and was the school that UK Coach John Calipari sent his son to.

Not bad for a school as young as they were. If you are looking at the view of the "entire athletic department", then their success in baseball and football in such a short amount of time is even more impressive.

They weren't going to win State this past year, but they'd made a nice run in the All A and were becoming a team that was perennially a favorite to win the 11th and do some damage in State once they got there (again, All A). Those kind of steps are what it takes to build a program like theirs which doesn't draw a lot of kids compared to the schools they'd be competing against.

They rose to the level of competitiveness in one of the toughest districts in the State over the past few years and were capable of giving Lexington Catholic all they wanted in a regular season game, and even beat them in a few over the past 3 or 4 years.

Sure, they had far more room to grow, but it's somewhat of a disservice to them and the progress they've made if we try to compare them with some of the other privates in the 11th like Model or Sayre who are afterthoughts when it comes to athletics 9 out of 10 years.

That's just my opinion.

i dont have a dog in the fight & I respect your opinion JokersWild.

LCA had a couple of good years with football & it culminated in 2009, but has sorta soured since then, I am pretty sure they are under .500 @ this point. Baseball has made a couple good runs since their last title in 05, they shoulda won state in 2009 but got snakebit by Station in the Region, that was a great team to watch for sure. I know they are a young school & I dont think that Sayre, or Model(actually not a private) is not even in the same ballpark as an LCA or Catholic & that is only my opinion.

I would be interested to see if they are able to continue getting things like the Dunkin Donuts events once Cals kid isnt @ LCA. That school has had a long tie in with some UK children as is. I could'nt see a high profile coach @ UK football, basketball, etc... honestly sending their kid to anywhere but a private school in the area, again, just my opinion. LCA will have a very good boys basketball team next year no matter who is the coach.

any school goes through a peak & valley @ some point, I am just meerly observing that it appears outwardly that overall LCA has been regressing some, but I could be totally off base.

Thanks. Agree that it's a good discussion, and think you've made some great points.

Their football and baseball programs have dropped off in recent years, but only when compared to the success that they more or less catapulted themselves to out of nowhere.

There are a lot of kids on some of the better AAU teams around the State who are attending LCA. A decade or so ago, that wasn't the case. Even in the years when I was still living in Lexington ('09-'11 range), I would see kids like the Barnette or Burdette kid who played for them that would see a large role for most any team in the 11th.

I don't think they are necessarily a "threat" to Lexington Catholic, Scott County, etc., but they aren't someone that I'd sleep on. I look at their resources and see a school that would be very dangerous if they made a firm commitment to winning. At the end of the day, I would reason that if Lexington Christian weren't "sneaking up" on Lexington Catholic, I don't know why the Knights would hire their Head Coach away to be their Athletic Director.

Again though, agree that it's a good discussion that is something worth debating and that reasonable minds can differ.

The short article below by Mike Fields shows that Carter already has strong ties to the LexCath program. Doubt that there was any intent to undermine LCA's program when it's at a high point, just an extra added advantage to the change. There may be a back story at LexCath, where there are already two Athletic Directors and a new football coach, but that is not clear yet.

PER MIKE FIELDS @ Kentucky.Com (Lexington Herald-Leader)

Lexington Christian Academy boys' basketball coach Brad Carter is leaving the Eagles to become athletics director at Lexington Catholic, his alma mater.Carter has been at LCA for eight years. He was Tommy Huston's top assistant for six seasons before succeeding Huston as head coach.Carter, 38, said it was an "unbelievably tough decision" to give up coaching "because it's all I've ever done."This move is for my family, a better situation financially for my family. God presented this opportunity and I couldn't turn it down."Carter and his wife, Stacey, have two young daughters, Shelby and Lily, and they're expecting twin daughters.Carter played at Lexington Catholic under Danny Haney in the mid-1990s. He was an assistant to Haney at North Broward Prep in Florida, and to David Henley at Holmes before joining LCA's staff. Now he's headed back to Lexington Catholic."If not for Danny Haney, I wouldn't have gotten into coaching or athletics," Carter said. "So I'm humbled and honored to be able to call myself Lexington Catholic's athletic director."Carter, who had a 29-29 record in two years as LCA's coach, will leave his successor a well-stocked roster. The Eagles will return seven of their top eight players, including All-City first-teamer Matt Rose."I think we're on the brink of doing special things in the basketball program here," Carter said. "I've been coaching these guys since they were in the fifth grade, so it was very tough to break the news to them that I was leaving. But they're such good guys, they understand why it's happening."

Apologies if I came off as implying that the Lexington Catholic hire was a way of sabotaging or undermining the efforts of LCA. On the contrary, I'd say that it is a testament to what Carter was able to accomplish at Lexington Christian and the direction he had the program headed in. Lexington Catholic is known for solid coaching in all sports and generally don't miss when they make a hire.

No apologies necessary, my friend, didn't take it that way and not a personal issue to me anyway. Like yours, my first thought was this is a shame for the LCA kids that have made the "Holy Wars" between the Christians and the Catholics into one of Lexington's biggest rivalries. Hope they land on their feet with a great hire and great chemistry.
