Great start for Boone Soph Jeffrey Purnell. Pitched 3 innings. Faced 12 batters, struck out 7 , gave up only one hit on 38 pitches.

Congrats to the Birds on the early season win.

The Highlands Bluebirds baseball team opened the season on a high note Friday.

Highlands traveled to Florence and beat the 1-1 Boone County Rebels, 3-1. Bluebird pitchers Lou Bunning, Joseph Martin and Joey Cochran combined to throw a one-hitter and strike out four. Martin (1-0) picked up the win and Cochran recorded the save.

Highlands recorded eight hits. Alex Veneman led the way with a double. Grayson Heck and Evan Allen had two-out RBI singles.

The Bluebirds play host to Cooper on Saturday. Game time is 11 a.m.

Nice effort overall by both teams early in the season. Purnell cruised through the batting order the 1st time. Birds scratched 1 across the second time through.

Boone ran into a few outs that could have ended up in runs. Bird defense was solid.

JR Bunning threw very well and will tighten up his control as the season goes along.

JR Martin had solid velocity and got a tough out on Ganns in a clutch situation.

SR Cochran closed out the 7th with a ton of strikes, pounding the zone and making the bottom of the Boone order put it in play.

Great way to start the season.

Great win Highlands over Boone! I do have to ask the question to Boone Coaches; why pitch Trey G with Holmes and not Highlands? Seriously? I heard that Trey is hitting 87mph. What a great young man! Again, congrats to Highlands!

Boone was scheduled to play the defending state champions on Sat, so I figure they stayed with their rotation plan. I think Trey G only pitched about 35 pitches against Holmes for a warm up. Boone pitched Soph. Jeffrey Purnell against Highlands which was hitting low 80"s during his freshman year. They only pitched Jeffrey 3 complete innings with 38 pitches and had 7 k's . I think Boone is looking at the bigger picture not just early wins, if so Purnell would have probable stayed in the game and walked away with about 15 k's and his first W of the season.

One hit pitching for the Birds, pretty solid.

Birds did have pretty good defense behind their pitching. It seemed like there was more hits for Boone. Boone had 4 or 5 mistakes on the base path which resulted in outs. Were they on with walks?
