Newport Central Catholic 3 Bracken County 1

The Breds open the 2014 campaign on a winning note as freshman Haley Meyers fires a 2-hitter and records 12 K's (11 thru 5 innings) against a very good Bracken Co. squad.

NewCath played without starters Sarah Neace (P), Loren Zimmerman (3rd), & Michaela Ware (ss).

Details to follow, my tummy is growling for eats.

Is that Haley's first varsity game?

Whether it is or it isn't, that's a heck of a night.

Congrats to NewCath on the win! :thumb:

Ok is Bracken a good team and Meyers pitched that good or is BC down a little. I don't know just asking bc 12 ks and 2 hits is flat out getting it done.

Neither team did much early on, although Bracken Co. got lead-off single down the 3rd baseline by So. Allison Conley and she got no further than 2nd and the Breds got a lead-off walk, on four straight pitches, from Sr. Taylor Burkart and she was stranded at 3rd.

NewCath got all the runs they would need in the 4th. Jr. catcher, Kristen Schreiber led off the inning with a double to the right-center alley, leftfielder Taylor Burkart hits one up the middle that the SS dives for, but has no play at 1st. Fr. Katherine Schreiber pinch runs for Burkart and steals 2nd, and on a 3-2 pitch Fr. Haley Meyers groundsout to 2nd, but Kristen Schreiber scores. The next batter, Sr. rightfielder Molly Mertle laces a solid single to rightfield scoring Katherine Schreiber and the Breds have 2-0 led.

NewCath plates one more in the 5th. With one out, Jr. SS Casey Kohls rips one to rightfield, advances on a passed ball and scores on a "laser-beam" to left-center by Kristen Schreiber.

The Polar Bears get their only run of the game in the 6th. A lead-off walk to Sr. Karly Jefferson, but she is out on a FC 6-4 off the bat of Sr. P Emma Conley. Then Sr. Brooke Woods connects for a double to right, now the Polar Bears have them at 2nd & 3rd and 1 out. Sr. Jordan Wills hits a Sac-Fly to center to score Conley, but Sr. Cassidy Jefferson ends the inning on a GO 6-3. In the Bracken Co. 7th, after being ahead 0-2, Meyers walks the lead off batter in the inning then gets a PO-2 & GO 4-3. She then walks the next batter, but gets her 12th strikeout of the game to end the ballgame.

Tip of the cap 1st to Hayley Meyers on one hell of a game. :ylsuper: Then to the NewCath infield that consisted of 3 freshman in their 1st ever varsity starts, Kennedy Bin at 1st, Audrey Giesler at 2nd, & Becca Collopy at 3rd....well done girls. Also to Casey Kohls having to play SS for the 1st time. :thumb:

She threw some varsity last year.

I can't speak for NCC, but Bracken returns everyone from last year & I believe senior Mallory Bell is playing this year. I expect them to progress nicely as the season goes on & they'll be in the thick of the 10th Region hunt.

Bracken Co. returns every starter from last year, including 5 Sr's.

Haley Meyers much improved from last year with the help of Megan Hinck.

I failed to add Emma Conley with 8K's. :thumb:

She did a great job, even if her uncle wasn't in the stands cheering her on. :whistling:
