Compromise article from the CJ

Re: being "against private education", the problem with all of this is that you've got a variety of motives running through this split nonsense. On one hand, there are people like Sexton who do seem to demonstrate a true dislike of private schools. On the other hand, you have people like Beverly Keepers who would say anything if it meant positioning herself for an eventual superintendent's job.

Generally speaking, I believe the core motive here is an attempt to raise the barriers for public school kids who might consider switching to a private school. I think this has very little to do with athletics, and everything to do with funding. Athletic competition is just a convenient alibi.

Hmmm... Raise the barriers. Spoken like a true economist. ;)

This is my problem with the rule, and the example I'm going to use is a specific kid ... Zach Barnard, the former Owensboro Catholic quarterback who is now at Marshall University.

Barnard, as I understand it, went to Holy Name, a Catholic grade school in Henderson. the way I see it, Barnard had four choices for high school:

1. Memorial, a Catholic school in Evansville.

2. Mater Dei, a Catholic school in Evansville.

3. Henderson County.

4. Owensboro Catholic.

Holy Name, technically, can't be considered a feeder school for Owensboro Catholic or Henderson County. I'm not sure Holy Name is considered such for the Evansville schools.

If this compromise, crappy as it is, is agreed upon, where are kids from Holy Name going to go to school and be immediately eligible? The only place will be at one of the two Evansville schools.

Any rule that would encourage a Kentucky kid to go to an out-of-state school is bunk. This "compromise" is awful.

No use spreading untrue innuendo. Under the public school proposal (which is not a good proposal for kids, but a great proposal for middle aged men who want to be on the podium when state championship trophies are presented to their schools), this student would be eligible at 1) any catholic high school in the diocese (so Owensboro Catholic, St. Mary, Trinity Whitesville, etc.) or the high school where his residence is located. Yes, Holy Name being in the Diocese makes it a feeder (or affiliated school) under the proposal.

As for out of state, that would be an Indiana decision.
