Listened to the game on the radio today. I could tell when something good happened for Trimble before the announcers could report the play, simply because of the very audible crowd roar. I am assuming all of Bedford and family outside of Bedford was there.

Trimble County was having a tough time early with Ncc's pressure, but as the game went on they seemed to settle down and played very tough hard nosed basketball. New Cath would get a ten to 12 point lead but Trimble kept battling back and would cut it to 5 so. Finally foul trouble and lack of outside shooting (which against Murray the Raiders hit many big outside shots) they just couldn't over come. Very well coach and scrappy team. They will be a very tough in the 8th region.

I have not seen NCC play in a while. What type of defense did they play? I noticed only 7- 3 pt attempts for the raiders. That must be a season low for them.

The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds girls basketball team led by just five points in the fourth quarter against the Trimble County Lady Raiders. But NewCath pulled away for a 65-48 All “A” State Tournament quarterfinal win Friday.

The Thoroughbreds saw three players reach double-digits. They were Nikki Kiernan, Alexus Mayes and Michaela Ware with 21, 19 and 10 points respectively. They made 18-of-40 shots for 45 percent and 26-of-35 free throws for 74 percent.

Paige Black led the Lady Raiders with 18 points. Trimble County made 20-of-50 shots for 40 percent and 7-of-10 free throws for 70 percent.

NewCath won the rebounding battle by a 34-25 count but committed 22 turnovers to 21 for Trimble County. Mayes led NewCath with nine rebounds with Stephanie Lewis and Kiernan following with eight and seven respectively. Ware collected nine steals.

The Thoroughbreds (19-2) are making their sixth consecutive trip to the tournament semifinals. They face Danville at 11:30 a.m. today.

Wow - 28 wins! And to do it throughout the years against a stead diet of Heritage Academy, Beechwood, Villa, Ludlow, and Dayton no less. Defeating Heritage Academy by 47 was certainly a key win on the road to the Championship.

The one thing that really sticks out to me here is the large free throw attempt difference.

 

NCC with 26 points from 35 attempts, Trimble with just 7 points from 10 attempts. That is a 19 point deficit for the Lady Raiders to overcome with shots in their offense and that is tough for anyone against NCC's defense.

 

Without starting or implying any "referee" excuses, I am asking an honest question to those that were at the game in person. What was it that NCC did that created such an advantage for them on FT attempts?

 

Just a thought, but is it possible that NCC's time playing this season under the 9th regions extreme emphasis on defensive hand checks, holding, etc. has helped them elevate to play defense better without fouling? Possibly? Like I said, just a thought. Trimble comes out of the 8th were that emphasis on hand checks and so forth has not been nearly as strong.

Actually in 20 years of 9th Region All-A play since 1993 the NCC Girls would have a total of 10 losses also. Unknown how many wins. They lost in 93, 94, 96, 97, 98, 99,00, 04, 05, 06. Have not lost since 2006. Won 9th region in 95, 01, 02, 03, 07, 08, 09, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14.
