Inside the 10th Region (1/26/14)

Mustangs win 2, including 5th straight Class "A"

No team in the 10th has played more games this season than Bishop Brossart. In a week where many schools struggled to play once, the 'Stangs took the floor twice & won both times. Wednesday night saw Brossart do what we all expected, which was complete its domination of the Class "A" Regional Tournament. Alex Trentman scored 21 points & grabbed 10 boards as the Mustangs powered past Robertson County 63-30. Trentman was named to the All-Tourament team & was joined there by teammates Drew Burns & Jake Jennings. Brossart advances to the Class "A" State Tournament, where they will play the champions of Region 1 in the final game of the 1st Round on Thursday night, January 30th. Two nights after cutting the nets the 'Stangs hosted Harrison County, ranked #5 in the 10th Region. Trentman & Burns were too much for the Breds, combining for 37 points, 18 rebounds, & 6 assists as Brossart won 60-49. Harrison County was led by Dillon Pulliam's 15 & Grant Carr's 14.

Good news & bad news for Brossart

Staying with Mike Code's Mustangs, it's been a somewhat bittersweet week or so. During the Friday night win over Harrison County, Alex Trentman reached the 1,000 points milestone for his stellar career. The 6'7" senior needed 19 points & ended up scoring a game-high 21. But in some unfortunate news, Mustangs senior Jake Jennings suffered two spiral fractures of the bones just below his knuckles. While surgery was not needed, Jennings is expected to miss a significant amount of time. The 'Stangs are holding out hope that their 5'10" point guard will be able to return for the postseason. We certainly wish Jake a full, but hopefully speedy recovery.

Royals controlled by Holmes, but dominate Pendleton

Mason County was able to play a pair of games last week & saw mixed results. Chris O'Hearn's squad traveled to Covington on Wednesday to battle with 9th ranked Holmes. The Bulldogs' pressure defense was too tough, forcing 14 Mason County turnovers en route to a 70-53 victory. The Royals were led by Dorian Henry who scored 16 points & Jake O'Mara who added 12. On Friday it was the Royals who were applying the defensive pressure on visiting Pendleton County. Mason County forced the Wildcats into 22 turnovers & scored 34 points off those miscues, running away with a whopping 101-59 victory. Fourteen Mason County players scored, led by senior guard Lukas Greenhill's 26 points. By contrast, Pendleton County placed just one player in double figures--freshman reserve guard Michael Antrobus who scored 15.

Paris heating up

The Greyhounds went 2-0 last week, beginning with a home win in overtime over Bracken County on Tuesday. Paris led by 17 at intermission & by 20 after three quarters, but saw that lead evaporate as the Polar Bears forced the game into an extra session. The 'Hounds were able to hold on, coming away with a 70-63 win. Koebe Garrard led the winners with 23 points, while Bracken County freshman Austin Crawford led all scorers with 24. Three nights later Paris again jumped out early at Nicholas County, taking another 17 point lead by halftime. The Jackets closed the gap in the third quarter, but the 'Hounds pulled away for a convincing 75-52 win. Paris has now won 4 of its last 5 games & sits at just 2 games under .500 on the year.

MoCo cruises in its only contest

The much anticipated Montgomery County/Wayne County matchup did not happen as we all hoped, but the Indians were at least able to get on the floor once last week. The top ranked team in the 10th traveled to Paris on Friday for a 40th District game against Bourbon County. The Indians held just a 20-15 lead after the first 8 minutes, but overwhelmed the Colonels from that point on, finishing with a 89-54 win. Sixteen Indians put up points, with Bryan Wallace's 18 leading the way. Balance is the key for Jason Holland's team, as four senior starters average double figures in the scoring column. Wallace leads the way with 17.3 ppg. DeAnte Cisero is next with 13.3 ppg, while Darius Jones & Xavier Piersawl average 11.7 ppg & 11.5 ppg respectively.

Camels win District game with ease

Matt Wilson led Campbell County to a dominating 37th District win over Silver Grove on Friday night. The sophomore center was one of 3 Camels who notched double figures, finishing with a game-high 20 points. Aric Russell's club was clicking on the offensive end in the 1st half, scoring 63 points by intermission & then let up off the gas to leave with a 91-45 win. The Camels are scheduled to have a couple of home games this week, battling Augusta on Wednesday & then another District game vs. Scott on Friday. Campbell County has won 3 straight games & possesses an overall record of 11-4.

George Rogers Clark, Augusta, & Scott sidelined by weather

Weather issues kept three of the 10th Region's top ten teams from action last week, as the Cardinals, Panthers, & Eagles were unable to play. GRC last played on January 18th--a loss to South Laurel. Scott's last action was a January 17th loss to Dixie Heights, but Augusta hasn't competed in a game since its January 11th loss to Bishop Brossart in the Class "A" Tournament. All the game cancellations explain why this particular "Inside the 10th Region" is a bit more brief than most others.

10th Region Top 10 Rankings

1. Montgomery County (17-0)

2. Bishop Brossart (19-1)

3. Mason County (13-4)

4. Campbell County (11-4)

6. George Rogers Clark (7-11)

Blake Schneider has been cleared to play for Scott after being sidelined 5 weeks due to a broken rib. The Eagles will finally start seeing some consistent guard play and some leadership, they have lacked both for the past several weeks.

Great to hear this.

Who will be taking Jennings place at the point for Brossart until his return?

Good question. I don't know if anyone has answered this in another Brossart-related thread or not.

Who will be taking Jennings place at the point for Brossart until his return?

Erik Rieger has taken over the duties of point guard. He has had plenty of experience over the past few years and over the summer. Also as Jake Jennings was sidelined, Brossart has added big man Ted McDonald to the active roster. Ted had been battling a hand injury through the football season and was just cleared last week.

Rieger did a great job in the Harrison Co game. They will miss Jennings, but Rieger will fill in and do fine.
