"Football just got in my blood"

 

Thompson took over as Wayne County’s head coach in 2004 and has been climbing ever since. He led the Cardinals to the Class 3-A state championship game this season and has been voted The Courier-Journal’s statewide Coach of the Year.

Thompson received 14 votes from coaches around the state. Belfry’s Philip Haywood, who shared the award with Trinity’s Bob Beatty in 2011 and won the award outright in 2012, was second in this year’s voting with 13.

Very much deserved.

It merits repeating once more.... proof of what can be accomplished when a coach is actually given time to build a program.

I spoke with some Wayne County folks at the KYMSFA Championships - where Wayne County MS is getting to be a regular.

 

They said the program took a big jump this year in terms of numbers at both the HS and MS level.

That they have. It's just taken time & and rural areas, it tends to take a little longer. It's amazing, this year they had close to 70 on their HS roster with over 50 in their MS program, including an 8th grade class with over 30…just two years ago, after years of being right above or below .500 for the most part, they only dressed a little more than 30 kids.

 

Now look…….
