Not sure I would count Somerset in that group, since they did lose to Hazard, who, at the very best, was maybe 7th or 8th in 1a. That same Somerset team made it to the Final 4 in 2a. Hazard didn't make it that far in 1a. NCC beat Beechwood 34-31 and Frankfort beat Beechwood 33-21. Again, this same NCC team made the 2a finals, while Frankfort was eliminated in the Final 4 of 1a. I 100% agree with you on Caldwell, Desales and CAL. Even though Caldwell was upset in the regional playoff round as well as CAL, those 2 teams could have won 1a, although the way Mayfield was playing in the playoffs, it wouldn't have been an easy task. In watching Desales, they were also a very solid team, especially offensively, but, there D was a little suspect, imo, but, impressive nonetheless. While those teams were strong, I do think if WBurg, Frankfort, Pikeville, Hazard, Raceland, Russellville and Beechwood would have been on the east side of the 2a bracket, they all would have had a very good chance of being in the finals. 2a had 3 or 4 really good teams, but, they were all on 1 side of the bracket. NCC was good, as well, but, they really didn't have alot of competition in getting to the title game.

 

FWIW Somerset's loss at Hazard was by four points with Somerset missing several starters due to injury, with district play coming up many injured kids did not play in that game...I know every team has injuries but the Somerset team that was on the field only played one game the entire season that was anywhere close to healthy and that was the Glasgow game...Somerset was somewhat healthy in the Double OT Loss @ NCC also.

Just a heads up, NCC and BW were not even... NCC spotted Beechwood 21 points in the 1st half (may have even been the first quarter) virtue of turnovers, and NCC went on and dominated the rest of the game. This year was not your typical BW team at all.

The point was that the scores were about even...the point of the post was regarding how difficult it is comparing teams by comparing scores.

Yes, NCC had 3 early turnovers. Beechwood also had a turnover. Beechwood flubbed a punt that got blocked for a score. Beechwood blew a play on defense and gave NCC an easy TD run. We can play that game all day. The yardage in the game was pretty even so no one got dominated. In fact, Beechwood outscored NCC 7-6 in the second half and NCC did not score a TD in the second half. Both their scores were field goals, including the one at the end of the game that got NCC the win.

Beechwood v NewCath is always even. NewCath's 2 best teams of the past 10 years lost to Beechwood in the regular season. I don't use that game as a barometer of 1A v 2A overall.

The two teams are irrelevant, you could pick numerous scenarios to say that someone should beat someone based off of common opponents...the point is it is tough to gauge teams and their chances to win or even compete based on that. For example, Scott Co beats Male 24-10, Male beats Meade Co 41-12...Meade should not be able to be competetive let alone come a late fumble away from possibly beating Scott Co, right?

My point has nothing to do with which teams are actually better, my point is how poor of a gauge score comparing can be.
