8th Region Preview

29th District

South Oldham (24-8) 8th Region Champion, 29th District Runner-Up

Twitter - @SOHSAnnounces

The 2012-13 South Oldham Dragons made it to the Sweet 16 last year for the first time in their history. Last year's 8th Region Champions saw a large contingent of seniors graduate from the program, leaving Coach Steve Simpson, one returning starter in guard Kyle Young (8.5ppg/4.3rpg). Young will be accompanied by a number of returning seniors this year, but very little varsity experience among them.

Joining Young will be Jonathan Blair (1.6ppg/0.2rpg), Drew Greenwood (4.2ppg/3.0rpg), Drew Bullock (0.4ppg/0.3rpg), Drew Horsey (0.7ppg/0.8rpg) and Jacob Roy (1.0ppg/0.3rpg).

Coach Simpson says, "We will be a work in progress. We will be a very good shooting team with good athleticism, but our size will be our weakness this season. Our district is wide open this year."

South Oldham is usually a big 3pt. threat. Last year, shooting at 38.3% as a team from behind the arc.

The Dragons schedule will see most if not all of the 8th region powerhouses throughout the season. Games to be highlighted are their 29th district games with the county schools. They will be hosting the John Fendley Classic after Christmas.

Oldham County (25-8) 8th Region Runner-Up, 29th District Champion

Twitter - @OCHigh

The Oldham County Colonels find themselves with a new head coach in Coy Zerhusen who looks to build on last year's 25-8 season. Coach Zerhusen takes over for Coach Jason Holland who left to take the position at Montgomery County.

Returning from last year's 8th Region runner-up squad include 6'4 Senior Austin Wills (5ppg),6'2" junior Connor Hicks (6ppg) and 6'2 senior Austin Perkins.

From Coach Zerhusen: "Our team will be the most athletic team we have had at Oldham County in a while, especially the guards and wings. We lack some experience after 2 very good senior classes, and will be looking for some guys to take on new roles and for some leaders to step up."

Some of those guys include 5'11" junior Hayden Hawes, 6' sophomore Brandon Johnson and 6'4" sophomore Jacob Bates.

The Colonels Schedule includes hosting the Best In Hoops Tournament right before Christmas, as well as a majority of home dates throughout the year. Apart from district competition, they will see Simon Kenton, Owen County, Collins and Scott County on the schedule.

North Oldham (18-11)

Twitter - @NorthOldhamHigh

A 18-11 first year for Coach Chris Stobaugh and the North Oldham Mustangs last year will leave them with a little work ahead of them for the 2013-14 campaign after graduating David Levitch and his 23.8ppg/5.6rpg.

Returning for the Mustangs are 3 seniors including Trevor Burton (8.0ppg/3.7rpg), Adam Klingeman (3.4ppg/3.4ppg) & Justin Cundiff (4.8ppg/2.9rpg). Coach Stobaugh on his seniors: "These guys came on last year as we won 12 of our last 14 games. We will play a brutal schedule early."

Coach Stobaugh feels this year's weakness is, "The questions for our team are we going to score enough points and how will our inexperienced bench play?"

The Mustangs have some size, but they are relatively inexperienced. 6'4" Senior wing Derek Powell and 6'5" junior post player Travis Brown did not see varsity time at all last year.

The schedule for the Mustangs reflects the brutal district schedule within the county schools along with games with Fern Creek, Louisville Male, Collins and Madison Southern to start out the year and Owen County, North Bullitt, DeSales and Franklin County to end the season.

Trimble County (15-11)

Twitter - @TrimbleCoHigh

Coach Johnny Leep seems to have turned some things around in Bedford last year as the Trimble County Raiders had their best season in quite some time posting a 15-11 record. The season win total included a 6 game winning streak that ran most of December.

The Raiders lost 3 seniors off of last year's team and 2 of those played significant minutes in PG (Rob Brooks) and Forward (Ethan Merrill).

Returning starters for Trimble County include Andie Young (606ppg/3.2rpg) who in Coach Leep's opinion "An outstanding shooter that has really worked hard in the offseason improving his ball handling and ability to finish around the rim. I am looking forward to a breakout season for Andie." Evan Long (12.8ppg/1.8rpg) was all conference performer last season who has an incredible work ethic combined with outstanding ability. Evan was top 10 in the state in free throw % and 3 point fg % last year. Raider big man Michael Dunaway (11.8ppg/10.2rpg) was Courier area freshman of the year last season after averaging a double-double. Coach Leep writes about Michael: "Michael will be a big key to the season because of his ability to rebound the basketball and start the break along with forcing double teams in the half court that will free up our shooters."

Raider 6th man Dusty Wyssbrod is battling some football injuries and is expected to return at some point this season. Other returning Raiders include Josh Rexroat, and pointy guard Ryan Blanton. Newcomer and Transfer from Southwestern H.S. in Indiana is 6'5 junior Zach Brooks will also make a push for a varsity starting spot. Zach has extreme length and is a very skilled defensive player who will play big minutes right away for us.

Coach Leep on his team outlook: "We should have a very balanced team this year with a good mixture of guards and forwards. One strength of the team will be its length and size with 4 players measuring 6'4 or better. We should be a very strong rebounding team! We also have 2 outstanding shooters in Andie Young and Evan Long."

The Raiders schedule includes their NCKC Conference schedule which they could make a run at this year. In addition to that, they play in the Henry County Invitational tournament over the Christmas Holiday, giving the Raiders experience on the 8th Region Tournament host's floor. They added Spencer County and Nelson County to our schedule and they are both 3A schools who have a rich basketball tradition

30th District

Collins (21-7) 30th District Champions

Twitter - @MLCTitanNation

In just 4 years since the school opened, the Collins Titans have really formed into a very formidable opponent in the 8th Region. Coach Chris Gaither is in his third year as head coach and has amassed a 45-18 record in the past 2 seasons.

Most coaches in the region are on the watch for senior Ralphie Stone and junior Brent Kidwell as most promising returning Titans. Other seniors include Paul Miller, Lawson Page, Caleb Vogel, Masai Whyte, Zach Wiley and Jayon Winstead.

The schedule for the Titans is top loaded to be sure. Road games with North and South Oldham to start out the year before coming back home to Franklin County. They will take part in the Kentucky Bank Classic at Rowan County as well as the Lloyd Memorial Christmas Tournament in Northern Kentucky after the Christmas Holiday. They will face Boyle County in the Farmers National Bank Showcase as well. They have a road game at Louisville Trinity as well as DeSales and a home date with John Hardin at the end of the regular season.

No further information was received from Collins.

Anderson County (22-5) 30th District Runner-Up, 8th Region semi-finalist

Twitter - @ACBearcats

The Anderson County Bearcats had two huge winning streaks in the 2012-13 season which culimated into a 22-5 season in Lawrenceburg. A 10 game streak throughout December and into January and then toward the end of the season, an 8 game stretch.

The Bearcats are another team that had no seniors on the squad last year, making them one of the favorites in the 8th Region and will contend for the 30th district championship as well. This year's team has a total of 9 seniors on the bench, including one that coaches in the area are on the watch for, that being Christian Estes. Other returning seniors include Ross Cox, Zach Freeman, Tyler Harrod, Darius Harvey, Luke Mann, Blake Moss, Trevor Pevely and Chase Sutherland.

Their schedule includes 8th Region opponents, Gallatin County, Carroll County, all of the Oldham County Schools and finishing up the year strong against Simon Kenton, Owen County and Franklin County. They will be on the road for 3 tournaments this season. They will participate in the KY Bank Classic @ Bourbon County, the Red River Classic after Christmas at Powell County and the Kentucky Bank Challenge at Rowan County.

No further information was received from Anderson County.

Spencer County (15-17)

Twitter - n/a

The Spencer County Bears have a new head coach in Jason Burns. Along with 4 returning seniors from last year's 15-17 squad, they look to improve on last year here in 2013-14.

Returning players include 6'3 Senior Cameron Fitts (4.5ppg), 6'2" Senior Esteven Cordoba (5.2ppg) and 5'11 Junior Justin Miller. Some other key players for the Bears this year will include 6'2" sophomore Blake Lambdin and 6'1" sophomore Jamie Newman.

As for strengths and weaknesses, Coach Burns tells us: "We will be very young and very inexperienced. We really just have two guys that return that got significant Varsity playing time last season. We have pretty decent size and our younger players have some talent. We are trying to speed up the tempo, play more guys, and really improve defensively. Have a good group of guys that play really hard. That with our size and use of depth should cause some problems for teams.

The schedule for the Bears, along with their district games includes a date with John Hardin at home, all of the Oldham County schools and all of the Bullitt schools .

Shelby County (10-18)

Twitter - @shelbycountysch

Coach Jason Couch and the Shelby County Rockets look to rebound after last years 10-18 season. Since Collins High School has opened, Shelby County has not had the success of previous years, going 20-67 since their last Sweet 16 appearance in 2010.

Coach Couch may have started the turnaround with last years 10-18 season. The Rockets had no graduating seniors on the squad last year, so all players return with another year of varsity experience under their belt.

Returning seniors for the Rockets include Kipp Moore and Aaron Holder.

The schedule for the Rockets includes a mix of 8th Region schools, a trip to Northern Kentucky to take part in the Lloyd Memorial Christmas Tournament after Christmas, hosting the Tom Creamer Classic and Mike Casey Classic, on the road at Oldham County for the Best in Hoops tournament

No further information was received from Shelby County.

31st District

Owen County (20-10) 31st District Champions, 8th Region All "A" Champions

Twitter @Rebels_Nation

The Owen County Rebels have a bit of a streak going on in Owenton. Back-to-back 8th Region All "A" Champs, Back-to-back 31st District Champs and Back-to-back 20 win seasons. A streak that the Rebels hope to make a trifecta by season's end.

Some of the key losses for the Rebels include Zach Ripy (13ppg/4apg), Justin Shelton (9ppg/10rpg), Stone Osborne and James Stone off the bench.

Returning players for Owen County include Senior Jarrod Ball (6ppg/2rpg) coming off a leg injury that kept him out the first half of the season last year. Seniors Hunter Trenary (8ppg/2rpg) who is now the 3 point threat for the Rebels, shooting at a 42% clip. Tucker Trenary (3ppg/2apg) will take over the point guard spot for Coach Duvall and the talented Sophomore Carson Williams (16ppg/7rpg) who is one of the top sophomores in the State and has already received his first scholarship offer from Samford back on July 13th of this year. Add in sophomores 6'2" Mason Borchers at small forward and 5'10" Vince Toftness at backup point guard to round out the Rebels squad this year.

Some key games this year for the Rebels include playing at the Wide World of Sports Arena in Orlando at Christmas time as well as their NCKC Conference games and a twin bill of 31st district games as well. The 31st district teams generally see each other around 3-4 times by seasons end with all of the district teams sans Henry County playing in the 8th Region All "A" Classic which this year will be held at Eminence. The Rebels will have their first round game against the host Eminence Warriors.

From Coach Duvall, "This years region will have a lot of balance similar to last year. Collins and South Oldham are the front runners."

Some other key matchups for the Rebels include Bryan Station at the Wierwille Classic on 12/7, Simon Kenton at home on 2/4 and then finishing up the regular season with home games against Grant County and North Oldham before hitting the road against Anderson County, South Oldham and Oldham County.

Gallatin County (14-12) NCKC Conference Champions

Twitter - @AthleticsGC

The Gallatin County Wildcats got hit with the injury bug late in the season and did not make the run that usually happens in Warsaw each year. Joe Sargent had dislocated an elbow and then Koby Carlton went down with a knee, leaving Kristian Morgan to run the point, but according to Coach Jones "When we lost our point guard, we lost our rhythm and we were not able to recover from that. In this off-season, Koby Carlton re-injured the knee, but his re-hab may allow him to return by the January timeframe.

For the 2013-14 season, Gallatin County gets something they haven't had in some time, that being height. 6'7" Troy Phelps (10.2ppg/10.1rpg)transferred from Villa Madonna in the offseason and will have his senior year in Warsaw along with Cole McCubbin (4.2ppg/3.0rpg), Joe Sargent (2.4ppg/1.8rpg) and Chase O'Conner (2.2ppg/0.5rpg).

From Coach Jones: "Troy Phelps has excellent ball skills and a big heart, his lack of bulk will be made up with his heart and that falls in with what we do at Gallatin County". "Joe Sargent is healthy and can be a 1 or 2 guard for us." "Cole McCubbin can shoot it outside or inside and has nice ball skills and can do a lot of offensive things for us." "Chase O'Conner has hit the weight room in the off-season. Chase led the team last year in FT% and 3 pt shooting last year. Should start at the 3 spot."

The Wildcats will also travel to Orlando for the KSA Events tournament at Wide World of Sports along with Owen County. Gallatin County will have Carroll County in the 8th Region All "A" Classic at Eminence on 1/22. Coach Jones also has rounded out his end of the season schedule to get the Wildcats ready for the postseason. In February, Gallatin County will see Anderson County and Oldham County on the road and defending 8th Region champ South Oldham at home.

Eminence (17-13) 31st District Runner-Up

Twitter - n/a

The Eminence Warriors under their head coach Chris Nethery have become a district and All "A" contender in a very short period of time.

The Warriors are led by returning senior point guard Jalen Dixie (21.5ppg/8.8apg) who was last years leading scorer. Joining Dixie this year will be Cornelius Sanford (5.1ppg/3.6rpg) who Coach Nethery says is the teams best defender. DeMarcus Bailey (4.2ppg/3.1rpg) also returns and Coach Nethery says of Bailey, "Several times last year, he was the best player on the floor".

Also rounding out the Eminence squad are Shelby Armstrong who can finish around the rim and provide some depth at the 4 or 5 spot. Mitchell Golden who has worked hard in the off-season to develop into a contributing big for the Warriors and Trevor Payton who will also add some depth and can knock down open shots.

The key strength for the Warriors this year is overall team speed. As Coach Nethery put it, "We will be hard to guard. We have a lot of quickness and can break people down off the dribble. We will be quick and athletic in all spots."

The goals for the Warriors are ones that they know well. To win the 8th Region All "A", District and Region. They feel that they can contend in all of those spots. They will have Owen County as their first round opponent in the 8th Region All "A" Tournament which they are hosting this year.

The schedule for the Warriors includes a home and away with their district opponents including opening up at home against Gallatin County, but then they head out on the road until the 10th of January when they bring on North Oldham. Other key games include a home date at the end of the season against South Oldham, Tournament games with Robertson County, Pineville, Robertson County and 2 games against Rockcastle County.

Henry County (12-19)

Twitter - @HenryCoAthletic

The Henry County Wildcats and 3rd year head coach Enoch Welch have a Senior laden squad returning from last years 12-19 season.

Returning for the Wildcats will be leading scorer Austin Young (12.9ppg/4.3rpg) along with other seniors Robbie Cruse (1.8ppg), Dakota Estes (5.5ppg), Chase Howard (9ppg), Landon New (7.8ppg), Brad West (4.2ppg) and James Wundrak (4.2ppg/3.5rpg).

The schedule for the Wildcats includes some of the teams that the NCKC schools usually don't see. These include opening up on 12/3 against North Bullitt, Bullitt Central, Bourbon County along with region competitors toward the end of the season including South Oldham, Oldham County and ending the year at home against Simon Kenton.

No other information was provided by Henry County.

Carroll County (16-12)

Twitter - @CCLiveWire & @CarrollCountyHS

Last year's 16-12 Carroll County Panthers saw the largest amount of wins since the 2004-05 year. Another senior laden team this year looks to build on that success for the 2013-14 year. They will do it without graduating Trey Boles (15.8ppg/6.9rpg), Mt. St. Joseph signee Dallas Gibson who was injured after 14 games last year while averaging 19.1ppg and 9.9rpg. Brandon Stewart also graduated, taking 10.2ppg with him as well, so the returning seniors will have to pick up for the graduating points and boards with their increased playing time.

Those returning seniors include John Michael Adams (2.4ppg/2.8rpg), Dakota Corbin(7.2ppg/5.5rpg), Austin Crowell (5.3ppg/2.6rpg), Michael Hall, Taylor Hill (0.6ppg/0.5rpg), Brad Osborne (0.6ppg/0.5rpg) and Jacob Wise (4.8ppg/3.2rpg).

The Panthers schedule includes their NCKC Conference schedule as well as a double dip of 31st district opponents. They will have border rival Gallatin County in the first round of the 8th Region All "A" Classic on 1/22. The Panthers bolstered their schedule with games against Anderson County and South Oldham and have an added mix of 9th Region teams on the schedule including opening up with Lloyd Memorial at home on 12/3. They will also host the North American Stainless Tournament at Christmas time.

No other information was provided by Carroll County.

32nd District

Simon Kenton (19-11) 32nd District Champions

Twitter @SKHSAthletics

Simon Kenton finished last year as 32nd District champs and got to the 8th Region semis before falling to eventual 8th Region Champ South Oldham in a 2 point game. This year, the Pioneers will need to find where 33.2 ppg will come from due to the graduation of Andrew Sampson (19.4ppg/3.7rpg) and Riley Barnes (13.8ppg/3.9rpg).

Returning in Independence for Coach Steiner will be Senior Forward Taylor Morrison (8.7ppg/4.5rpg), Senior forward Brennan Kuntz (3.2ppg/4.4rpg) and Junior Guard Noah Robinson (5.8ppg/4.2rpg). Kuntz is getting looks from WKU for Football.

In talking to Coach Steiner, the South Oldham game last year serves as the Pioneers motivation this year. Their key players will also rely on some other underclassmen to step up their game and assist. The team will just be at full strength when season starts with the Football players coming in after finishing their season over the weekend.

The Pioneers schedule as always since their move to the 8th Region is a mixture of 8th Region teams as well as playing in the NKAC Division 1 against the 9th and 10th Region big boys (Conner, Dixie Heights, Scott, Ryle, etc.) Some of the key matchups for the Pioneers this year include 9th Region favorite Holmes at home on 12/16. February will test SK with matchups with Owen County, Campbell County, Anderson County, hosting Covington Catholic and then a pre-region appearance in New Castle against Henry County.

Grant County (24-6) 32nd District Runner-up

Twitter @GC_Braves_Bball

The Grant County Braves start out the 2013-14 season with a new coach in Brandon Grammer. Coach Grammer has a big task ahead of him in trying to find almost 30 points a game in losses of Tyler Carr (19.5ppg) and graduating Austin Anglin (10.3ppg). The cupboard in not bare though with 6'4" senior Aaron Hicks (8.7ppg/4.6rpg & 46% from the arc) returning and will lead the Braves in scoring. Coach Grammer said "He's the best shooter I've had on any team I've coached." Senior Logan Cummins (10.1ppg/2.4rpg) will start the season as an inspirational leader from the sidelines as he continues rehabbing an off-season injury that will set his season start to sometime in January.

Junior Austin Johnson (3.6ppg, 2.7rpg, 2.5spg) will take over as point guard for the Braves this year. Coach Grammer commented about his pg, "He is the epitome of a floor general and the absolute leader of this team". Junior forward Jordan Saylor (4.5ppg,3.8rpg) will also return and although can hit from outside, will be called on to play big inside. Junior Seth Adkins will play the other guard spot for Grant County and with the addition of a couple of junior bigs in Austin Schneider (6'5) and Cameron Burk (6'4).

Grant County will have some depth going 10-11 deep with 4 players off the bench over 6'2". Coach Grammer has been encouraged with the teams outside shooting and plans to use that in attacking the opponents defense.

The Braves schedule includes 2 games, home and away with district competition as well as a big mix of 9th Region competition including opening up at Ryle on 12/3, Holy Cross, Conner, Boone County and a few 10th region games including Clark County and Campbell County toward the end of the season.

Finally, with 3 returning starters from last years region contending team, Grant County is still a bit shy on experience. Along with the new coaching staff, some growing pains early for the Braves.

Walton-Verona (9-21)

Twitter @WVBearcats

It will be a rebuilding year at Walton-Verona from the coach on up. New head coach and former Newport Central Catholic head man Grant Brannen takes over the reigns from Coach Dan Trame and will look to start the re-building process in Walton. A couple of key losses for Walton-Verona in the off-season in Senior Tanner Moeves (17.1ppg/4.4rpg) and Junior Grant Moeves (10.8ppg/2.5rpg), leaves just 2 returning players with varsity experience. Senior Danny Thompson (1.4ppg/1.7rpg) and Senior Alex Taulbee (3.4ppg/2.6rpg) along with Shae Evans(1.5ppg/0.5rpg) & Eddie Hoffa (1.7ppg/0.7rpg) round out the returning Bearcats.

Along with a double dip of district games, Coach Brannen's schedule includes some of his familiar 9th

region completion mixed in with his new NCKC conference games. Opening up with Cooper on 12/4, the Bearcats have 5 of NKY's biggest on the schedule as well as 8th Region power Collins on the road at the end of the season in preparation for the 32nd district tournament which Walton-Verona hosts this year.

Williamstown (3-23)

Second year head coach Roger Harden looks to improve on a 3-23 record this year with a returning squad led by senior David Jump. Williamstown had no seniors on last years squad and will call up 3 8th graders according to the KHSAA roster.

The schedule for the Demons this year includes a good amount of games in NKY this year. They will take part in the Swauger Classic at Bellevue, Buckeye/Bluegrass Tournament in Middletown OH, along with their NCKC Conference schedule and 32nd district double dip of games.

No other information was received from Williamstown.

9. Williamstown - Does the second year under Coach Harden get the Demons on track?

10. Oldham County - Does athleticism make up for experience and boost the Colonels under new head coach Coy Zerhusen?

Not sure where you got your info, but Anderson did have seniors graduate last year, two very important ones in Jay Smith their leading scorer and probably leading rebounder and was in the talk for 8th region player of the year, and Austin Linzy who was a big contributor as well. It will be a struggle to fill Smith's shoes and it may be more of a "team by committee" this year. Linzy's physical presence will also be missed. Ross Cox is not expected to play this year and will be greatly missed if he doesn't.

Actually received nothing from Anderson County at all. Going on what I could find. That's what this is for. To make sure we have good information. Thanks for adding this.

Got you. Wasn't sure how you accumulated the info. Thanks for posting. Personally I think the 8th is wide open this year, with an edge to Collins and SK as probably the top two horses in the lead.

SK has a Junior transfer from Walton his name Daugherty. He will start at point guard.

This looks to be the most wide-open 8th Region in quite some time. Not sure I would feel comfortable ranking anyone number one at this time, the vote would be shaky at best. All of which points to an incredibly exciting season!!!

Maybe so, but that's not a good thing for SK.

#1 - #6 look pretty interchangeable to me right now. Would love to say we'll get our first idea of how some of those teams match up tomorrow when South plays Collins, but Collins' football players may not play - if they do, they won't be up to speed.

We'll get a good chance to see what SK is made of with two 8th Region road games this week against Gallatin and Grant (ranked 9th and 7th above, respectively).

Maybe so, but that's not a good thing for SK.

Who would be a better option to start the point? He looks solid and quick from what I've seen so far.

Ross Cox has decided to play for Anderson. This will help them tremendously especially with rebounding and defense.
