I am also one of the parents who likes to work the scoreboard, keep the book or sit behind the bench because I lose my mind in the peanut gallery amongst all of the other coaches in the stands.

 

I have to get away.

Of course with basketball and the closeness to the court I can see where this is a problem. As a football parent, I learned you can go to practice and or game , watch what is going on, and discuss it when you get home. It's great time with your child and it doesn't embarrass him in front of his team mates. Ninety nine percent of the time there was a reason why they played a certain way. So before a parent goes out and embarrass themselves, talk to your child and give it a few hours and it will be all over by the next practice or game.

It's just as annoying to the kid as it is the coach in many cases.

 

Some parents dont seem to understand that they are not only embarrassing themselves, they are embarrassing their child.

 

Some time ago, I saw a thread that a girl basketball player went to the official and asked that their parent be ejected I believe. Totally agree. Embarassing.

 

We hear so much of it from the crowd, especially when we broadcast behind the scorers table. Let the kids play and let the coaches coach. It's not about the parents, but the kids.

Most of us here on BGP all know the game pretty well, because it is sports that brought us to this site.

 

But being knowledgable about the game does not entitle us to undermine the coach.

 

Check your ego at the door, take a seat and enjoy watching your kid play.

 

You are going to miss this when it's gone.

I watched a dad for several years coach his son from the stands and force his son to play every year. Do one game his 10 year old son decided to sit down out on the field while the game was going on. Dad was yelling at his son to get up and suck it up. Kid just sat there. Dad tried everything to motivate him to get up and join in the game, the kid finally hollered over to his dad, "I told you I didn't want to play and you made me." Dad was noticeably embarrassed and that was it, they were never seen at the field again. Classic.

There was an NKY MS Girls team a few years ago that had a dad that (in his mind) was the next Pat Riley. Game before our game and we were all up in the bleachers and this dad is yelling out to run an offense, to play zone on defense. (everything opposite of what the coach is yelling out for them to run.) All the sudden coach of that team calls a Time out. Grabs the markerboard and marker, leaves the bench walks up in the stands, hands dad the markerboard and marker, and heads off to the locker room. Everyone in the gym was staring at this dad now............he never said another word the rest of the game.

But being knowledgable about the game does not entitle us to undermine the coach..
