Newport Catholic/ Moeller(Oh)/ Withrow (Oh) scrimmage

Featured Replies

All three teams participated in a scrimmage tonight on the campus of Cincinnati Withrow HS. Every bit of 150 on hand to watch the varsity action, the JV teams where in the other gym (I didn't make it up stairs to see this).

10 minute running clock (stopped for only TO's and under 1:00).

NewCath 14 - Withrow 10. Pangallo with a half court "banker" at the buzzer.

Moeller 10 - Withrow 5.

Moeller 14 - NewCath 13. Moeves, Schulte, McDonald, & Verkamp all score.

NewCath 13 - Withrow 13. Moeves, McDonald, & Verkamp do all the scoring.

Moeller 12 - Withrow 9.

NewCath 8 - Moeller 8. Great "D" by both squads.

NewCath 9 - Withrow 7. More good "D".

Moeller has football size kids....WOW, three "bigs" a legit 6'10" - 6'9" - 6'8".

Withrow, nice speed, but their "bigs" need to hit McDonalds and eat a few cheeseburgers.

NewCath starts Pangallo, Schulte, McDonald, Weyer, & T. Moeves. On the bench Verkamp, Rawe & G. Moeves

Breds with a nice showing this evening, but like every team at this early juncture, things to work on. McDonald hitting 3 after 3, and did a great job using his body to establish position. Zach Pangallo was Zach Pangallo, Schulte with a couple nice plays down low, and a couple blocks. Ben Weyer, can't wait to see him get more minutes the season, did a nice job at both ends tonight. Tanner Moeves, "draining" 3's, did a very nice job handling the ball.....IMO, from what I've seen so far, mirror image of Michael Bueter. Josh Verkamp with very productive minutes, is "money" from the foulline. The kid has never played outside of high school, can only imagine how much better he could be had he played AAU????? Grant Moeves out with shin-splints.

Drew hitting 3s is going to give Schulte a lot of opportunities inside.

Keys will be the 3 kids coming off the bench this year.

NCC's bench is always an issue.

Their bench will be fine. Way to much emphasis put on bench strength. How many actual premium minutes do bench players get? They will have Moeves/Weyer(whichever one doesn't start), and Verkamp. Either one of these kids could start on most teams in the region. The other Moves can swing out to the point guard when necessary, and Franzen will come after football. Also, Rawe, Freppon and Smith can give spop minutes without hurting the team.

I agree on the "too much emphasis" part but their bench is always thin. Fortunately, they have a strong 5 or 6.

Schools with less than 400 students are seldom going to go 11 deep. My point is their bench isn't that bad, in fact better than most.

356 to be exact.........carry on.

I would agree, especially after they get the football kids on the bench.

You would now better than I. I'm speaking in general teams over the recent years.

Way too much emphasis is placed on the bench issue.

More important is that they have 6 or 7 basketball only varsity players. These guys will be and already are in basketball shape. Conditioning will not be a problem. The bench will only come into play if they have injuries.

One man's opinion: I didn't think NCC's bench did enough last year - through 8. Weyer showed spurts and will be a very good player. Not enough IMO. Great 5 though.

I am told Cincinnati Moeller is the pre-season #1 ranked team in the state (big school division), with at least 3 D1 recruits: Jr. Nate Fowler (Mich. St), Jack Anton (Elon), Grant Benzinger (Miami, Oh.).

Didnt Holmes scrimmage them over the summer? I think I saw some footage Walter posted of Bolden slicing and dicing them.

Benzinger verbally committed to Wright St by the way. The Fowler kid is 6'9 and recently visited Michigan, they are targeting him big time.

My info was from Walter, so he must have made a "bigtime" fat finger error with the info he sent.

From what I've read Fowler has offers from Miami O, Butler, UD, and WVU. No mention of MichSt. Big kid growing into a man's body. Still has a kid's body from what I saw last year. Michigan has shown interest. Northwestern came to watch him. ND has shown interest as well.
