Running clock rule: declinable?

Featured Replies

So why wouldn't we allow Covington Latin to decline a running clock, if the coach wanted to get their kids a full 32 minutes of game time?

I'll just go from the standpoint that watching blowouts is insufferable, and they should be gotten over with as soon as possible.

So games in High School are for the enjoyment of the fans and not for the competition of the kids?

Probably a healthy dose of both, don't you think? It's why more money is spent on football than cross country or soccer.

Ummm...I don't think that's the reason more money in spent on football than the other sports you mentioned. Lots of schools that don't have football have cc and soccer, simply because of the inherent cost to fund a football program.

My point being, there better be a compelling reason to spend as much as is spent to outfit a HS football team, and that reason is fan support. If the fan support wasn't there, football would die at the HS level because it simply isn't practical to fund it, especially in an era of constrained school budgets. The fact that booster clubs — fans — pick up the rest of the tab further proves my point.

As far as the running clock, I have experienced this twice now with my JV kids. To me, it actually hurt both teams. My subs got very little work in, and the teams we played who really needed some floor time to work out the kinks didn't get it because of the running clock. I understand the concept and why the rule is there, but it can hurt development and that floor time under actual game situations is precious.
