It was another exciting week of Northern Kentucky football as we saw some close games, a few blowouts, and some huge individual performances. Let’s take a look back at the action from week 6:

Conner 26 Cooper 21

The Jags drove down the field and scored with 2:01 to play but that was just enough time for Kentucky commit Drew Barker to lead his team to victory. With 1:33 remaining, Barker found Ryan Romey across the middle for a 62 yard touchdown that would hold up to move the Cougars to 4-2 and drop Cooper to 2-5. Romey finished the game with just 20 yards rushing but had 70 yards receiving on 2 catches, including a touchdown. Drew Barker finished 11-18 for 131 yards passing and 3 touchdowns, while rushing for 90 yards. Chris Creech and Andrew Way were on the receiving end of Barker’s other two touchdowns. The Cougars won, despite giving up 363 yards of offense, including 310 to Will Ludwick through the air. This was a huge win for Conner because it keeps them in the driver’s seat for a home playoff game.

Covington Catholic 28 Beechwood 7

In a rivalry between the two Dixie highway schools, it was the Blue Colonels who came out on top. Defensively, the Colonels dominated up front, allowing just 5 yards rushing. Sam Dressman was once again the man for the Colonels, rushing for 45 yards and a touchdown on 9 carries while also racking 111 yards receiving on 8 catches. Brother and quarterback Ben Dressman finished 12-17 for 143 yards and 2 touchdowns passing, The younger Dressman also had 56 yards on the ground. Covcath finished with 348 yards to Beechwood’s 233 yards.

Dixie Heights 40 Tates Creek 6

It was another dominating performance for the Red Colonels as they run their win streak to 5 straight after falling in week 1 to Covcath. The Colonels were once again led by the law firm of Caple, Moore, and Washington who led the Colonels’ rushing attack with 11 carries for 120 yards and three touchdowns. Seth Caple had 81 yards and a touchdown on just 8 carries. Junior quarterback Drew Moore had another efficient week, completing 11 of his 14 passes for 128 yards. Dixie racked up 272 total rushing yards on the night, while their defense finished with 3 interceptions and have now held their last 4 opponents to 7 or less points.

Fayetteville, OH 33 Dayton 12

The Green Devils have now lost 4 of their last 5 and fall to 2-4 on the season with an important district game against Ludlow coming up next week.

Highlands 77 Harrison County 0

It was no surprise here as the Bluebirds improved to 7-0 with another blowout victory. The Bluebirds passed for 439 yards, while the defense gave allowed 185 total yards. Drew Houliston finished 11-for-14 for 249 yards and 4 touchdowns, but it was junior Beau Hoge who nearly stole the show with 190 yards and 5 touchdowns on 9-of-10 passing. In a high scoring affair in Covington, it was the Bulldogs who came out on top. Holmes jumped out to a 42-16 3rd quarter lead but started pulling starters, allowing Bellevue to get back in the game. Jon Scruggs finished with 293 yards and 4 touchdowns on 21 carries for Holmes. Bellevue quarterback Tyler Ackerson had a huge individual performance finishing 30-58 passing for 402 yards and 2 touchdowns while also rushing for 150 yards and 3 touchdowns on 19 carries. Blake Stephenson of Bellevue had a career night with 2015 yards receiving and a touchdown on 11 catches. It’s not often that a team gives up 624 yards of total offense and still comes out with the win, but that’s what happened on Friday night. Holmes finished with 419 yards of total offense.

Lloyd 28 Holy Cross 21 (OT)

It took overtime, but the Juggs improved their record to 4-3 with a win over the Indians. It was a game of the running backs as senior running back Jared Gabbard led Lloyd with 27 carries for 237 yards and three touchdowns while senior Jalen Beal led Holy Cross with 38 carries for 280 yards and three touchdowns. Gabbard scored the game winning touchdown for Lloyd in overtime carrying the ball on all 4 plays before finally punching it in to give the Juggs the win. Holy Cross had jumped out to a 21-7 3rd quarter lead but with 8:15 left to play, a Lloyd touchdown by Gabbard helped send the game to overtime as the defense would stop a late surge by the Indians offense.
