Point is, all the math in the world doesn't make you a great manager. Baker pushed buttons like everyone else and they didn't work. Maddon did and while this one didn't work exactly as planned, the 4 hole guy gets hurt and his replacement hits a walk off.

 

And as I've stated hundreds of times, I don't hate the math. I use what's important. I have no problem with manager's that use a little more math or a little more feel. Stats don't manage games, people do.

In sports, the manager or coach's job is to put his team in the best situation to have a favorable outcome. If you look at each decision from a math standpoint, you'll be far more successful at it than if you go by feel.

If a manager of the Reds went with the #'s 100% of the time, knowing that 25% of the time that guy wasn't 100% mentally or physically, I'd have a bigger problem with it.

Here's what you're missing. He repeatedly over the last two years has had guys hit 1st or 2nd that are terrible at getting on base. That isn't a one inning quick decision. He chose over and over again to run a terrible lineup out there. Good luck defending that with feel.

So you wanted Choo 1, Votto 2, Bruce 3, Frazier 4 and Phillips 5?

I like the smart assedness, but no. However that would have been better than what they did with Cozart, or BP or Ludwick 2nd.

 

I just didn't want Cozart 2nd or Stubbs in the top 2 last year. Not to mention hitting Izturis 2nd just b/c he was playing for BP when he was 2nd or Cozart was beyond stupid. You hit your best 5 hitters 1-5 in some order. Choo then Votto would have been by far the most ideal lineup he could have used then BP then Bruce. See if Choo gets on a ton it made no sense for Bruce to hit 5th b/c the inning was over without him coming up way too much. I assume you understand that???

Votto lead the team in hits and OBP so Bruce came up plenty of times with him on base. Votto lead the team in hits, he hit plenty of times with Choo on base, who was 2nd on the team in OBP. Bunch all those guys together and you have the chance at one inning of success...the 1st. Because that's the only inning you guarantee they hit in the same inning.

 

Bottom line, BA RISP sucked. You couldn't change this lineup and get 3 more wins. They underachieved, plain and simple.

 

Is it better to plug a guy in the 2 hole that may not be suited for it when you are resting someone or move a regular out of their accustomed spot in the lineup...then move them back when the 2 hole guy is no longer resting?
