Longtime rivals Lexington Catholic (4-2) and Boyle County (6-0) meet in Danville after both teams easily won their district openers.

The Knights and Rebels have met 20 times over the last 16 years, including twice in each of the last six years. Boyle leads the series 11-9; Lexington Catholic has won the last four meetings.

Since the teams were aligned into the same district in 2007 this game has been the pivot point of the district and the region. The winner of the regular season game has gone to capture both district and region each year since then. The region final has always included these two teams since the playoff format standardized. The teams are probably as evenly matched as they have been the last few years with the local rankings having the Rebels rated higher with their 6-0 record and the Cantrall poll favoring the Knights with both teams in the top 10.

The game may be decided in the red zone. Both teams will need to finish their drives when they are knocking at the door. Last years game was decided inside the 10 yard at the end of the game. Both teams defenses look very good this year.

The Knights need to play loose and score early and often. I will go 28 - 21 for the visitors.

I would argue that in the last 25 years there has not been a better sporadic rivalry than this one.

When they were in the same AA District the only real challenging games Boyle had in '99 and '00 were vs. Lex Cath (twice each year in District and Regional Final). If memory serves those were the only losses for the Knights in those 2 seasons.

They didn't see each other when the schools moved to AAA but with realignment the two keep meeting twice a year more times than not. I will try to see if I can find some scores between the two when I get the chance.

The 'modern rivalry' restarted in 2007. Since that year the teams are 6-6. LexCath ran the table in 2007 during that championship year. Boyle took the 6 games over 3 years during the Lamar Dawson era. And the Knights have taken the last two years.

The 'single game' years were 2004 and 1997. Both were regular season games. Boyle took 1997 28-27 in overtime. LexCath took 2004 43-42 in the opening game of the season.

The 'old rivalry' years were from 1998 to 2000 with two games in each seasons like the modern period. LexCath took the '98 games by more than a touchdown each time. The 4 games in 1999 and 2000 were decided by 8 points or less each time with Boyle winning them.

As of today the overall rivalry is 11-9 in favor of Boyle. And it is 6 and 6 since 2007.

Year by year records for LexCath are here on pages 110 and 111.

Good preview article....

Prep Football: Boyle County ready for huge district showdown with Lexington Catholic - The Advocate Messenger: High School Sports

Not sure coach French has this statement correct:

“I don’t think he panics. When he first got thrown in there, he panicked,” French said.

Ryan entered last year's game with 11 seconds left on the clock before halftime and hit freshman Sam Letton for two consecutive passes and a TD.

But, as often the case, the local paper has a good preview.

Fluke play. He had a very rough and mistake filled 3rd quarter after the adrenaline wore off. He got himself together in the 4th and led the Knights to victory. We watched him crap the bed and the clean it up and put new sheets on the bed in those two quarters. Very impressive performance for sure.

Yes, the early int in the 3rd ruffled him a bit. And certainly French turned up the pressure after the halftime knowing he had younger QB at the helm. So French probably is referencing the 3rd quarter. That game was won on Amoh Kumengisa's legs mostly with two long runs in second half.

Lex Cath passing really good. But thier D hasn't stopped anyone except Mercer who had a qb that hadn't played a snap until the wk before, he is a wideout, and they had 6 turnovers. Long night for lex cath D because thier off don't stay on the field long. Boyles backdield to good. Qb for boyle can run. They havent turned him loose this year he is just a soph, i expect he may do some new stuff tonight. He avg over 20 yds a catch last year as a feeshman and had 10 tds. He is the best athelete in the school. Boyle will get the win.
