Johnson Central 72 Noblesville Lions 28

Featured Replies

That is part of the problem gchs, as smaller schools in the area aren't exactly eager to take a beat down. Couple that with the fact that the two bordering states of OH and WV both use a computer system to set their playoff teams and the problem is magnified.

And honestly part of Johnson Central's scheduling woes are self inflicted. They have burned a few bridges over the years and many in the coaching ranks just aren't interested.

Not arguing any of that but this game is a different set of circumstances and has nothing to do with any Matney's complexities.

In this particular case Johnson Central ended up with two open dates because Sheldon Clark cancelled their game very late after most all KY schools had their schedules set. JC tried to find a KY opponent and put out feelers in 5 states trying to fill the date and no luck. If you have ever been involved in scheduling, particularly that late in the game, then you understand the hurdles that exist.

So Johnson Central had accepted the fact that they were going to have 2 open dates when they were surprised by a phone call from a representative from Noblesville who wanted to come play the Eagles. It was a blessing just to get an opponent, even if it wasn't the ideal opponent.

Yes, I do understand the scheduling issues and I had forgotten that Sheldon Clark dropped them late. Still, playing a sub-par Canadian team and a team of home schooler's were the best they could find? I am thinking many KY schools probably pass on playing JC due to Matney and his complexities. I wouldn't schedule them.............just sayin'.

Matney is a tough customer to deal with sometimes. I don't think he is the devil some try to make him out to be, but there definitely is a different swagger to how he approaches things and how people respond to decisions he makes.

The Belfry/JC game almost fell off the schedule this year, and had Johnson Central not have had all their other scheduling woes, very well may have. A little bit of a power struggle about who plays at home and which week to play. Thankfully they worked it out.

Geography certainly doesnt help as well. The WV playoff system certainly hurts as it is..but when Johnson Central is arguably the equivalent of a Top 3 team in their state overall.. that reduces the teams who want that type of challenge. Throw in the fact SW Virginia simply dont have many "big schools" and you see JC in the situation they are in.
