Pet Peeve: "Crooked Numbers"

Featured Replies

I don't like the term. Is "crooked" supposed to mean curved? If so, 4 and 7 are not crooked. Someone should come up with a better way to colorfully describe the series of integers greater than 1. To me, use of the term indicates laziness on the part of the speaker and the term really isn't accurate. (I majored in English in college so these things tend to disturb me more than they do others, I'm sure.)

You're kidding right? It's baseball slang, the color of baseball. Anyone who has ever played the game at any level knows this. Like MentschTrachtGottLacht stated in his post, "one of the great qualities of Baseball is it has its own vernacular."

No, I'm not kidding. Another phrase that is kind of weak is that "baseball is a game of inches." Why is baseball singled ot? Basketball is not a game of inches?

When I saw this thread, I thought it was about the spacing of sewn on uniform numbers, which is a pet peeve of mine.

For example, sometimes there isn't a good consistency in the spacing of numbers (ex. two guys on the same team wear a double digit number, the tracking between one is tight like '11', while another player on the same team has a much looser tracking, like '3 2'; this probably falls on the equipment manager).

Have you ever played the game? If you have I cannot believe you've never heard these things.

I've always associated the quote you noted above with football as I believe the full quote is, "Football is a game of inches and inches make a champion." I think stated by Vince Lombardi.

I really haven't heard the "crooked number" term until about 10-15 years ago.
