Newport Central Catholic's Brandon Gray

Nice article by Richard Skinner......http://nky.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/AB/20130509/SPT0302/305090202/

MULTIPLE STATE TITLES AT NEWCATH: Newport Central Catholic sophomore Brandon Gray may have accomplished something no one in state history ever has: being a part of a state championship football, basketball and baseball team in the same season.

Gray was just called up to the varsity baseball team at NewCath recently and was a member of the team that won the All ‘A’ Classic state title on Tuesday. He was also a reserve on the basketball team that won the All ‘A’ Classic state title in late January and played 12 games as a backup wide receiver/defensive back on the football team that won the Class 2A state title this past December.

There are several members of the baseball team that also were members of at least one of the other two state championship teams: Josh Cain, Pete Collopy, Johnny Caudill, Tommy Donnelly and Kole Zenni were on the football team and Michael Bueter, Colin DuPont, Nick Seibert and Zack Pangallo were members of the basketball team.

“People can say two of those titles were only All ‘A’, but with us being a small school it’s still an unbelievable accomplishment,” said NewCath athletic director Rob Detzel. “I’m just so proud of the coaches, players, fans and school in general. It’s been a heckuva year.”

I'm sorry, but unless they win the big one in baseball and basketball it doesn't really resonate with me. NCC is on quite a run though and their success should be applauded.

Agree, not to take anything away from the accomplishment. It is impressive but so far they have ONE state championship.

Only because Kentucky is one of two states that doesn't classify all their sports. They won in a field of 32 in football and a field of 120 in basketball and baseball, yet some people think that football is the only one that counts because it has KHSAA in front of it. It is a hell of a lot harder to win an ALL A title than a football title. Actually about 4 times as hard. How many football titles would teams in NKY have all time if there were no classifications? Count them on one hand easily.

I do not disagree with anything you say other than the 4 times part. Winning a 120 team tourney is only a couple more wins than a 32 team tourney. However, the fact remains that, someone else won the basketball title and more than likely, someone else will win the true baseball state championship.

Congrats Brandon and NCC on a great year and a great accomplishment. Wear your rings proudly.

Congrats to the Breds.

First of all I'm shocked Detzel even brought up the issue of All A and people questioning the value of the championship. I'm with Front of the rim, not sure why a 32 team championship counts and a 120 does not??

Second of all, any kids that played the combination of football and basketball? I would think they should get to share some glory as well? Haas maybe? Help me here LB.
