HS have a choice about joining the KHSAA so why would a MS not have the same choice. On top of that if there is some way to force a MS to join then can they charge a membership fee? HS pay to be a part of the KHSAA as they have a choice. No choice would have to mean no fee I would think

 

I see your point barrel, and yes the HS have a choice, but if they choose not too then they can not compete against teams that are in the KHSAA correct?

 

My understanding is that there will NOT be a fee payable to the KHSAA, However, the other state organizations, local leagues, conferences and such can fees as they chose for those teams that wish to join.

 

Again I think some people are thinking way to big on this. KDE wants to make sure MS sports are conducted in a safe manner, in many cases they were not. The only way for KDE to enforce this was to push it through the KHSAA.

 

Read the details of the regulations slowly and with open eyes (this for everyone and not a reply directly to barrel) It doesnt really change to much from the way things are being done now. (other than the holdback issue which has been debated to death)

They would have to, as they would have to allow the school districts with no middle school at all to play as their HS team. IE Like Bell Co for example.

Will they still be able to "sanctioned" by the KHSAA to allow them to play other sanctioned schools. I mean Conner and Cooper cannot get together to form a team and compete as 1 team. Is this scenario I made a good one or is it apples to oranges?

While some MS try to do their best to some what comply with it they don't really do it. This si going to put a finacial strain on MS to come up with money and resources for these sports and coaches. The record keeping, budgets and books that it appears will be required will be difficult to handle also. What do the MS gain from all of this? THe item that appear to be going into place are things school districts themselves can/should be handling. So what do the MS get?

Actually Cooper does have a middle school program but its called the Union Jaguars I believe - and I thought kids from a couple different middle schools play on it. But they all matriculate to Cooper ultimately.

Teams like Colonel Youth Football and Newport Central Catholics program are similar cases where the teams a made up of a mix of parochial school kids- matriculating to Cov Cath and Newport Central Catholic.

See the bolded, the exact issue is that those things were not happening. One principal on the task force that reviewed all this exact statement was "we dont do that stuff, I guess we should start" This was a principal in a very large district.

In this case it is apples to oranges compared to a county like Bell. I don't think those programs would be able to be a part of the KHSAA system. They are not a middle school though they pull from the HS school district which could include a number of different MS. In the case of Bell Co there is no middle school because the county has something like 3 or 4 k-8 schools. Those schools are too small to field individual teams so they are combined. Also in Bell Co's case all of those schools feed one HS.

The Bell Co example goes hand in hand with the Catholic schools question. a collection of schools that play together that go to one high school in the end. The issue with Catholic schools is the Diocese ruling that you can attend any Catholic high school within the diocese, basically open enrollment, so how would you classify which of the Diocese grade schools can play together and which can not? or does it trickle down to each high school field your team, as long as the kids attend a school in the Diocese its ok?. Jefferson co and Kenton Co have open enrollment as well. Should those teams be allowed to compete?

The Boone Co teams bring up a good point, because Boone Co schools refuse to have ms football and several other sports, at the ms level, those teams have developed and created guidelines on who can play on what team based on your High School district.

I hope it stays the same. Why have a middle school basketball Sweet 16? Save it for when they are in high school. The current conference system works well imo.

I do not see how, the KHSAA doesn't force high schools to have football.
