I agree with you. I have noticed there may be more games scheduled at Freedom this year than I can remember.

 

I believe they altered their fee policy to make it a much better option for the teams using it. I'm guessing that has some to do with it. Personally, I absolutely love the place, though I just think a baseball field should have dirt on it somewhere.

My son player at EKU this past summer......they have a type of turf that allows metal cleats.........anyone know how it doesn't rip it up?

It seems they have adjusted their fee as Cooper has atlest five games there this year. I think the Ryle coach has moved their district seeding game against Cooper on May 1st there as well. I love watching games there.

@coop - Agreed on the dirt somewhere on the field. Ripken in Myrtle Beach does this with dirt mound and home plate areas. When you get rain, you hustle out 2 smaller tarps and cover those areas. Gives a much better feel for the 2 spaces where 80% of the action takes place in any baseball game.

 

@Otb84 - not sure what the different material is, but the Ripken fields in Myrtle Beach permit regular metal spikes to be worn

I would like to see a dirt pitchers mound at freedom.

Actually, Cooper is the home team for the district seed game with Ryle and were the ones willing to set up the game at Freedom. Cooper varsity and JV are playing quite a few games at Freedom this year - good for them. Great idea imo - less worry about cancellations due to wet fields and also gives you greater familiarity with Freedom's field for the regionals.

No to turf! No to Florence Freedom field! Our boys are not used to playing on turf. Huge game changer! Everything chages. Major changes in field conditions as compared to a all grass and dirt field. Most boys do not have the correct shoes #1, thus you cannot lead off, and or get your first step on a play which is huge. You loose at least 1-2 steps on lead offs, unless you have rubber cleats. Same on batting stides. Most boys I watch have tennis shoes, which is a huge disadvantage.

 

The initial ball bounce on the infeilders is much hotter so you have to play back, unlike a grass and dirt field. Again, you loose timing on your throw to first. Our boys practice and play all year on grass AND dirt then they have to play on all turf?

 

Move the regionals back to dirt and grass fields, i.e. St Henry and Dixie!! Both great fields!! Also Simon Kenton. Great field as well!!

So you're in pretty much the exact same situation as every other team in the 9th. I know they've used Freedom since at least 2007. Here is a list of the region winners since that time:

 

2012 - NCC

2011 - NCC

2010 - Beechwood

2009 - Boone County

2008 - NCC

2007 - Ryle

 

Not one of these teams has a turf home field and, at most, played a isolated game or two during the regular season at Freedom's field, so you are/were in the same situation as the other teams. Only Beechwood had a turf football field on which to practice (not sure if NCC gets to practice on Newport's field or not; Ryle's didn't exist in 2007). I will agree the game plays a tiny bit different, but it's the same difference for all teams.
