10 Notes From The 10th Region (Reviewing Week 10)

1) He has been back for a few weeks now, but Campbell County's Nate McGovney came back this past week. The senior had his biggest performance of the season in a Thursday night road win at Augusta, scoring 35 points & connecting on 13-13 free throws. The standout swingman was huge in a crucial 4th quarter, scoring 14 points & connecting on all 10 of his charity stripe attempts, as the Camels outscored the Panthers 25-13 en route to a 73-67 victory. The Camels have won 4 of their last 5.

2) Mason County hosted the best the 40th District has to offer this past week. On Tuesday night Happy Osborne brought his highly touted, but shorthanded Montgomery County Indians to Maysville, where the Royals gave them everything they wanted. But the 10th's top team closed the game on a 9-2 run to come away with a 64-52 victory, thanks in large part to 30 points & 10 rebounds by Omar Prewitt. Friday night saw the annual showdown with longtime rival George Rogers Clark--a matchup involving the two schools that have won the last 7 regional championships and 10 of the last 11. The Royals got the best of the Cards on this night, sending the visitors home with a 57-50 defeat.

3) Sticking with Mason County & George Rogers Clark, both teams boast junior big men who have put up some nice numbers. Shawn Johnson of the Royals has been getting it done all year as perhaps the most consistent big man in the 10th, averaging 14.4 ppg & 10.1 rpg for the season. The Cardinals, on the other hand, have received some special performances by Khmarkis Blanton, who has averaged 20.3 ppg & 12.3 rpg in the last two weeks.

4) Bishop Brossart earned its 20th victory of the season in a very nice 64-58 road win against Harrison County on Wednesday. Trailing by 1 to start the 4th quarter, the Mustangs outscored the host Breds 20-13 to seal the victory. Two nights later the 'Stangs did not fare as well against another set of Thorobreds. 9th Region power Newport Central Catholic came to Alexandria and left with a very convincing 58-43 win. Mike Code's team stays in the 10th this week, visiting Augusta on Tuesday night in a rematch of the Class "A" championship game. Friday night will see Scott come to Alexandria for a huge 37th District showdown. Get your  ready for that one.

5) After winning three straight Scott came back to Earth a bit last week when Covington Catholic came to town on Monday night & left with an impressive 72-61 victory. The Eagles rebounded against a different 9th Region foe on Friday, upending Conner 61-53. Nick Jackson & company are slated for two huge road games in the region this week, as they travel to Montgomery County on Tuesday night & then Bishop Brossart on Friday.

6) Jason Hinson's Augusta Panthers started last week by putting up 85 points at home in a 21 point defeat of Bath County. Points were more difficult to come by two nights later when Campbell County came to A-Town & held the Panthers to 67. The Saturday night showdown with top-ranked Montgomery County was cancelled due to weather, but the game has been rescheduled for this Wednesday night, which will allow a matchup of arguably the top two individual players in the 10th: Omar Prewitt & Brent Bach. A night prior, the Panthers will entertain Bishop Brossart.

7) Harrison County had only one game last week--the 64-58 Wednesday night home loss to Bishop Brossart. With the loss the Breds' record against the 37th District's "Big 3" is 0-3, having lost early in the season to Scott (83-79) & Campbell County almost two weeks ago (67-58). The Breds take to the road for three games this week, visiting Estill County on Tuesday, Mason County on Friday & Collins on Saturday.

8) Weather permitted Montgomery County only one game last week as well--the 64-52 win over Mason County. The Indians will make up for the lost time this week, taking to the court four times: vs. Scott on Tuesday, at Augusta on Wednesday, at Bath County on Thursday & at Harlan County on Saturday.

9) The big news in regard to postseason play came when the 39th District held their draw for the upcoming District Tournament. The District's top two squads, Mason County & Augusta, drew each other in the first round of the tournament which will start on February 18th at The Fieldhouse. While the draw is disappointing to many fans (including yours truly), it is my understanding that neither of these schools have ever been in favor of seeding. I have a sarcastic comment that I really want to make right here, but I shall refrain.

10) This week we are supposed to find out the fate of the other 10th Region district that refuses to seed: the 38th District, comprised of Pendleton County, Harrison County, Deming/Robertson County, & Nicholas County. The Wildcats & Breds are the top two squads, but hope to avoid drawing each other for a second consecutive year. Pendleton County has won the last three 38th District championships.

Boy, what a stretch for Scott (who I still think is firmly the 3rd best team in the 10th): host CovCath, a bit of a breather with Conner, then AT Montgomery Co. and AT Brossart? Wow! Coach Carr's team will certainly be battle-tested when Districts roll around.

Nice job Randy, I always enjoy your 10th Region recap.
