Someone Help me out .... District Champs

Featured Replies

All games played in the regular season is for seedings only , correct? The oldham era printed that South Oldham was the regular season district champs???? I've never in 45 years of following high school basketball ever heard of a team being referred to as regular season district champs. My understanding is they have secured the top seed only at this point, am I missing something? Thanks for the help

I think you are correct. Tourney determines who the district champs are.

Thanks Clyde, Thought that was the case...

Our district awards a regular season district trophy for the team with the best record in district play. It is given out at the district tournament meeting. They've done this since the late 1990's.

Of course, the district tournament determines the district champion and runner-up that will represent the district in the regional tournament.

This could not be recognized as a state award because every district handles season play differently. Some districts require everyone plays twice, some once, and some districts have schools that don't even play each other. So the season District Champion is really just for seeding purposes or for talking smack! :)

I'm surprised you've never heard it mentioned. In the greater scheme of things it doesn't mean anything other than achieving the #1 seed (and in most cases does not even have a formal trophy or award - or even KHSAA recognition), but it's commonly referred to around here. For instance, this is from today's Warren Central/Warren East preview:

"A Warren East home win would put the Raiders in front and would give the Raiders the tiebreaker over the Dragons. With a road victory, however, Warren Central would earn at least a share of the District 14 regular-season title."
