Randy Parker Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 (edited) 10 Notes From The 10th Region (Reviewing Week 9) 1) Don't look now, but the Scott Eagles are elbowing their way to the front of the 10th Region line. The improved play by Brad Carr's squad over the last several weeks has not gone unnoticed, but this week the Eagles made it known that the race to Rupp in the 10th Region is far from a two-horse battle. On Tuesday night the Eagles entertained & dominated District rival Campbell County by a score of 83-57, with Nick Jackson & Josh Felts scoring 25 & 17 points respectively. Saturday was perhaps an even more impressive win, as Jackson scored 27 points & pulled down 7 rebounds in a victory over Perry County Central. The upstart Eagles will take on a pair of 9th Region teams this week, hosting Covington Catholic on Monday night & traveling to Conner on Friday. 2) Bishop Brossart made what has become its annual trek to participate in the Touchstone Energy All "A" Classic State Tournament this week. The 'Stangs had hoped to cut down the nets, but settled for a nice 2-1 week, upending Louisville Collegiate in the opening round & Russell in the Quarterfinals before bowing out to perennial Class "A" power Bardstown. An 8-25 free throw shooting performance seemed to doom the Mustangs in the Semi-Final round loss, but don't expect any letdown from Mike Code's team. The 'Stangs will get right back at it this week, as they travel south down US-27 for a Wednesday night battle with Harrison County before hosting mighty Newport Central Catholic in Alexandria on Friday. 3) Top-ranked Montgomery County was in action only once this week, hosting defending state champion Trinity on Saturday. Neither team was at full strength as the Shamrocks flexed their defensive muscles & accomplished something few teams have been able to do this season: contain Indians' star Omar Prewitt. The Mr. Basketball candidate scored 19 points & pulled down 6 rebounds, but shot 3-17 from the floor & 1-11 from beyond the arc. 4) Chris O'Hearn and the Mason County Royals played only once this week (Friday night game with Rowan County postponed), but the one game was a huge confidence builder for a squad that had been struggling of late. Junior big man Shawn Johnson scored 22 points (10-13 FG's, 2-3 FT's) & pulled down 11 boards and hit the game-winning basket with 36 seconds left in a 56-54 victory over arch-rival & 16th Region power Fleming County on Tuesday. Johnson wasn't alone, though, as junior guard Lucas Greenhill chipped in with 14 points on 4-6 3-point shooting. With the win the Royals improve to 5-0 vs. competition from the 16th. 5) Harrison County began the week on shaky ground, losing consecutive games on Tuesday (Woodford County) & Wednesday (Campbell County). But the Breds were able to salvage the week by scoring a nice 55-52 road victory over District rival Pendleton County on Friday, led by junior Dillon Pulliam & senior Scott Kendall who scored 18 and 12 points respectively. The Breds have three games this week, but the highlight will be a Wednesday night showdown with Bishop Brossart. 6) Aric Russell & the Campbell County Camels were licking their wounds after a Tuesday night drubbing at the hands of Scott. But the Camels regrouped 24 hours later, scoring a 67-58 win at home over Harrison County, thanks in large part to junior guard Corey Holbrook's 27 points & 7 rebounds (7-15 FG's, 1-2 3pt. FG's, 12-13 FT's). Senior swingman Nate McGovney added 12 points & 9 boards, while freshman big man Matt Wilson put up 11 points, pulled down 16 boards & swatted 3 blocks. 7) It's been a good season to be Augusta forward Tanner Kelsch, who has helped lead the Panthers to a 16-7 record. The senior recorded an impressive double-double of 18 points & 12 rebounds in a Friday night home win over Deming/Robertson County. Even more impressive? The performance came just minutes after Kelsch was crowned Homecoming King. Never one to rest on his laurels, Kelsch returned to action the next day & scored 25 points in helping lead the Panthers to a dominating 98-75 win over Model--a squad that had made it to the Quarterfinal round of the Class "A" State Tournament. Kelsch was not alone, however, as junior teammate Brent Bach poured in 36 points, pulled down 13 boards & dished out 4 assists on Saturday. 8) Yet another tip-of-the-hat to Pendleton County standout guard Mason Monroe, who eclipsed the 2,000 points plateau for his illustrious high school career in a Friday night loss to Harrison County. The school's #2 all-time boys scorer has been quite the fixture in the 10th Region & never fails to amaze us. Monroe & the Wildcats will be in action a whopping four times this week, traveling to Deming/Robertson County, hosting Cooper, & then a pair of weekend road contests at Shelby County & Beth Haven. 9) Trust me when I tell you we don't want inclement weather this week. But just in case you're reluctant to trust little boys in snowsuits, let me show you why:Monday- Scott at Covington Catholic. Tuesday- Montgomery County at Mason County. Wednesday- Bishop Brossart at Harrison County, Cooper at Pendleton County. Thursday- Campbell County at Augusta. Friday- Newport Central Catholic at Bishop Brossart, George Rogers Clark at Mason County. Saturday- Montgomery County at Augusta. See what I mean? 10) We have talked about it off and on throughout the season, but the Deming Black Devils have officially occupied their new school, Robertson County High School. The first games in the new building will take place this week & we just wanted to take time in this thread to congratulate the fine people of Robertson County (in particular our good friend Devilman) & wish them nothing but the best. Below is a picture of the new facility: Edited January 28, 2013 by Randy Parker
LCDAWGS19 Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Hey RP...Pendleton plays Shelby County, not Shelby Valley.
mcpapa Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 ^ You are correct. As the proofreader, I blame myself. Don't be too hard on the 7 year-old.
LCDAWGS19 Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 ^ You are correct. As the proofreader, I blame myself. Don't be too hard on the 7 year-old. Ill cut him some slack. I just didn't want a reader to make a 4 hour trip to the Valley for nothing! Disclaimer: no offense to the kind people just south of Pikeville...gas is just expensive.
LCDAWGS19 Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Looking forward to Wednesday's PC/Cooper tilt. I've heard great things about that bunch. Even more excited to see the new RCHS gym on Tuesday night!
Randy Parker Posted January 28, 2013 Author Posted January 28, 2013 ^ Thanks for the correction. If you wake up tomorrow to tires that have been slashed, it probably wasn't me.
