Cordia 73 Powell County 69 (OT)

Featured Replies

Surprising score. Powell is 0-5 in the weak 56th district. For Cordia to defeat Hazard and then play Knott Central to the wire.....well, an O.T. win vs Powell is confusing.

Never heard of Cordia before. Where is it? How long has it been in existence?

Sorry to go off subject, but have a friend from the 14th region who moved several years ago and was wondering how in the world Knott County Central is an All A school. What is their enrollment?

Their enrollment is low this year. It falls right in the alignment of what a school needs to have in order to compete in the all a, all a is the state's small version of a state championship for the small schools

Have they always been an All A school?

Now as for this game.

It was a dandy from start to finish, the game went down to the wire, Powell lead by as many as 8, I think Cordia lead by right around 5-6. Powell lead 67-64 with 14 seconds left when Owootoah went to the line where he would make 1/2 FT's, Powell then was called for a 5 seconds inbounds call right after the Powell player was yelling timeout..Owootoah got the ball and scored to tie it up at 67-67 with 5 secs left, Marcum's 3 was off, Goodwin tip at the buzzer just fell short, game went into OT where the Cordia Lions outscored the Powell Pirates 6-2 to win the game 73-69. Powell got their only two as the buzzer sounded. With the win the Lions go to 11-7, Powell falls to 7-12.

I don't know how many he had but Warren for Cordia had a load of rebounds. I'd say right around 20 or maybe more.

Not that I know of unless they were back in the 90's if the All A existed back then.

Powell played a lot better tonight then they did last night.

The reason Owootoah got a technical foul right after he was called for a foul, he laid the ball down in front of the official, the official went to get it, Owootoah then kicks the ball away from the ref, the ref asked him to go get it, he didn't and the ref T'd him up.

The way the announcers where talking, Chisolm for Cordia should have been ejected, I don't know what he done but he was called for his 5th foul, as he was walking to the bench, he done something behind the ref's back, if the ref's had seen him, he would have been thrown out, according to the announcers.

How was the crowd for tonight's game? Was in Stanton for a KCC-PCC game a few years back and enjoyed the atmosphere

Powell usually has a nice crowd at home and on away games if they are close or district games. Not sure how many went with Cordia, I don't think it would have been many due to the long haul

Cordia is an old school, located on Lott's Creek in Knott County, but is actually closer to the Perry County seat of Hazard than they are to Knott County's seat of Hindman. Their mail is a Hazard address. They have an enrollment of around 100 in the high school. Their school probably dates back to the 1920's. I believe it first started out as a private school but is now part of the Knott County School District.

The only reason they didn't consolidate along with the old Knott County High School, Hindman High, and Carr Creek back in the mid '70's when Knott County Central was created is they are located too far out in the county, or that's what I was told by a school official a few years ago when I asked that question.

Thanks for the info.

When the 3 Knott County schools merged (old Knott County High, Hindman, and Carr Creek) back in the mid 1970's, Knott Central probably had over 1,000 students. But because of the decline in the coal industry they have lost populations and enrollment, like all coal mining counties. Their enrollment now is around 630-650 grades 9-12.

They got in the All A by being one of the smallest 125 school that accepted an invitation to play in the All A. They are legit in their qualification with the way it is is set up by the All A organizers, who are separate from the KHSAA.
