12th Region All A Classic Preview

Featured Replies

The 12th Region All A Classic will kick off at Burgin on Monday January 14. Somerset will take on host Burgin at 8:00pm.

Somerset is currently 12-5 and is the favorite to win the 12th Region All A title. Somerset is led by Tyson Williams who is averaging 15.1 points and 7.3 rebounds a game. Williams is shooting 63% from the field as well. Ryan Weddle is pouring in 12.4 points and 8.3 rebounds a game and shooting 54% from the field. Ryan Dishman and Cam Cheuvront are chipping in 12 points and 9.5 points a game respectively to round a balanced attack from Somerset. Out of the 4 teams in the 12th Region All A tourney Somerset has faced only Danville so far and they defeated them 49-41 in the Lake Cumberland Classic at Southwestern. While it is not a stone cold lock for Somerset to win the 12th Region All A title they are indeed a heavy favorite.

Burgin is currently 5-7 and looking to add a legitimate win to their resume. Defeating Somerset would be that legitimate win. Burgin is led by Alex Beckerson and hopes to use some home court magic to pull off at least one upset to advance to the All A tournamnet in Richmond. Burgin is a young and inexperienced team but you can believe they will play with a lot of heart and leave it on the floor. Their crowd will be rambunctious and cheer them every step of the way so if the shots start falling for Burgin and they can get some momentum going who knows what may happen. For new head coach Brian Kirk, even one win in this tourney will go a long way for the future at Burgin.

On Tuesday January 15, Danville will face Monticello in the other All A Classic game at 8:00pm.

Danville is a senior led team that is currently 4-9 and they are indeed capable of winning another 12th Region All A title. Danville has been the 12th Region representative every year since 2009 and look to add 2013 to that streak. Led by Christian Gateskill-Fuqua and Devonte Alcorn Danville looks to be in a good spot to make the 12th Region All A final game against the winner of Somerset/Burgin. Danville recently defeated Mercer County and will face district foes Boyle County and Garrard County before they play in the 12th Region All A tourney next week. While Danville's season has been disappointing to date a good showing this week against district foes and the 12th Region All A tourney could be just what the doctor ordered to turn their season around.

Monticello is sitting at 1-13 and have struggled mightily all season. They are a very young team this year has been a year of learning for coach Stewart Gregory and the Monticello Trojans. A win by Monticello over Danville would be a monumental upset but crazier things have happened. Hopefully the young Trojans will soak up the experience and learn from it to one day challenge for the 12th Region All a title.

Fun facts:

Since 1990 Somerset and Danville have won the 12th Region title a total of 19 times out of the possible 23 12th Region All A tournaments since 1990.

Somerset won in 1991, 1993,1994, 1996, 1997 and 2001-2008.

Danville won in 1998, 1999 and 2009-present.

Monticello won in 1992.

The now defunct Harrodburg High School won in 1990, 1995 and 2000.

None of those teams won the overall All A Classic tournament but Somerset lost in the finals in 2001,2002 and 2005.

Good luck to all of the teams!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If Monticello doesn't win it this year then they never will again, because it is almost certain that they will combine schools with Wayne County next year.

IMO: Somerset's size will be too much for any Team in 12th All A. Williams and Wedell will dominate inside.

I agree. I'll add I think they are more balanced and more consistent offensively than Danville or Burgin as well. They have 4 guys who can score the rock consistently.

Forgot about that. I'd put their chances of winning this year at an obscenely low percentage.

What could be interesting is who will be in the All "A" next season. With two A schools closing in Paducah and Monticello also closing, we could see some teams who have long been just on the outside of the 125 teams who qualify now eligible. I don't know what the exact numbers are, but I do know Casey County isn't too far off. Wayne County isn't too far off either, but they will be further away once they take on Monticello's numbers.

Where is All A played this year? I've had people tell me 2 different spots.

Burgin hosts 12th Region.

The overall tourney is in Frankfort.

It starts out at Burgin on Monday/Tuesday for both girls and boys. In the past, the way the 12th Region has ran this tournament, if the host school's boys AND girls BOTH lose in the first round, the championship moves to a secondary site, mostly to prevent excessive travel. I don't know if that is how they will do it this year, but that has been the precedent set.

My choice would be T. Williams and Somerset representing the 12th.
