Goaltending On Shot At The WRONG Basket? What's The Call, Ref?

Featured Replies

While this happened in a college game tonight let's assume this happened in a high school game.

Sitch:

Game goes to OT.

When the teams line up for the tip they are facing the wrong way.

Team A gets the tip and heads to the basket that their jumper was facing.

A1 drives for a layup and the shot goes off the backboard at which point B1 THEN blocks it.

Whistle blows. Officials realize the teams went the wrong way.

Now what?

I say start over. Refs blew that one. Teams shouldn't be penalized.

I would assume offensive basket interference but what do I know.

What if they went 4 of the 5 minutes in OT before it was discovered?

Don't think so. Because if it is offensive goaltending then, it's the same difference as if they would have scored and the refs realized it. Can't take it away after the fact. Refs blew it, move on.

Can you have goaltending (technically not basket interference) on a shot at the "wrong" basket?

That's not the scenario you presented. After 4 of the 5 minutes just keep playing. After the first possession you can start over and make it right without harm.

IMO that's where it's tricky. If he would have made it, the other team would have got 2pts if I'm correct. If that's the case then yes, I would assume it'd have to be goaltending.

Based on what? Does the amount of time off the clock matter?

I hope not. Not sure though to be honest. I guess it would still be goaltending. Someone has the right to the points.

So you're saying the other team would get 2 points for blocking the shot?

It would for me. If it happened in the first minute if I was a coach I would argue to start the whole period over properly. If it was discovered after 4 of the 5 minutes I would file a protest.

Why does someone have rights to the points?

What would be the basis of the protest? How was your team harmed?

So you're saying the other team would get 2 points for blocking the shot?

If it's goaltending they should get the points IMO.
