10 Notes From The 10th Region (Reviewing Week 4)

1) Four weeks into the season & Bishop Brossart remains the only 10th Region team without a loss. Monday & Tuesday saw the Mustangs record wins 7 & 8 of the young season. On Monday night Mike Code's crew upended 9th Region power Newport 63-51 in Alexandria. The following evening, the 'Stangs made quick work of 37th District foe Calvary Christian. The Mustangs present a very balanced attack, with three players averaging double figures scoring: Justin Saunders (16 ppg), Alex Trentman (13.9 ppg), & Drew Burns (10.8 ppg). Trentman's play, in particular, has been outstanding of late.

2) The Campbell County Camels, playing without star swingman Nate McGovney, have found a way to do more than just tread water until the All-Region performer returns from injury. The Camels went 3-4 this week, with wins over Amelia (OH), Greenwood, & Henry County & losing to Doss. Junior guard Corey Holbrook has been leading the way for Aric Russell's team, averaging almost 26 ppg in the last two weeks. The Camels have also received outstanding contributions from freshman big man Matt Wilson. The 6'5" center had his coming out party with a 22 points & 10 rebounds performance in a 57-51 win over Greenwood. Two games later came another double-double, this time 10 points & 10 boards in a victory over Henry County.

3) Omar Prewitt isn't the only show in Mt. Sterling. Happy Osborne's Montgomery County squad finished 3rd place in last week's Farmers National Bank 12th Region Showcase (hosted by Mercer County) & received major contributions from several players, chief among them guard Bryan Wallace. The junior averaged 17 ppg for the tournament, which was enough to earn All-Tournament honors.

4) Harrison County went 2-1 this week, playing three teams from three different regions. A week before Christmas, the Breds smacked around Franklin County (11th Region) 95-52. On Friday the Breds fell to perhaps the top team from the 9th Region, the Holmes Bulldogs, by a score of 82-73. The following day Larry Kendall's team outlasted 16th Region foe Russell 78-76. Junior forward Dillon Pulliam continues to be a source of consistency & leadership, scoring 12, 25, & 16 points in the three-game stretch.

5) The weekend saw a quartet of 9th vs. 10th Region matchups in Mason County's illustrious Fieldhouse. On Friday night, Brent Bach's 30 points were not enough to get Augusta past Cooper. But in the evening's second contest, Shawn Johnson of Mason County had 17 points & 15 rebounds in a 52-47 win over Dixie Heights. The teams swapped opponents on Saturday night, with the 9th Region coming out on top in both, as Dixie Heights beat the Panthers 55-51 & Cooper dealt the Royals loss #2 on the season, by a score of 47-34.

6) Bourbon County returned to the win column this week, going across town to score a 15-point win at Paris. Three nights prior, the Colonels very nearly defeated 40th District rival George Rogers Clark, but the Cardinals went back to Winchester with a 57-56 win. The Colonels have been getting some very nice outings by junior guard Snoop Johnson, who is averaging 21.8 ppg in his last four games.

7) Scott remains at .500 (5-5) after splitting two games last week. The Eagles dominated Russell 81-52 at Holmes on Friday night, but then fell in a tight one vs. the host Bulldogs, 74-69. Brad Carr's boys will join Bourbon County, George Rogers Clark, & Bishop Brossart in this week's Republic Bank Holiday Classic.

8) After trouncing Dayton on Tuesday, Ed Cravens & the Pendleton County Wildcats took their show out of state, traveling to play in the Smoky Mountain Classic. The Wildcats went 1-2 in the tournament, losing to Miami Senior (FL) 61-41 & Elizabethton (TN) 88-80, before beating Huntsville (AL) 62-46. The Wildcats have one more game against an out-of-state opponent, as they host Oak Hills (OH) this Friday.

9) Young & inexperienced George Rogers Clark started the season in rocky fashion, but was able to scratch out a pair of wins last week. The Cards defeated Bourbon County 57-56 on Tuesday & after losing a couple, finished their pre-Christmas slate with a 59-52 win over Frankfort. Scott Humphrey's team received terrific production from junior big man Khmarkis Blanton, who was named to the all-tournament team in the Woodford County Invitational.

10) The aforementioned 9th vs. 10th Region games at Mason County were a part of the US Bank "Murphy" Classic, remembering a gentleman by the name of Mike Murphy. "Murph", as he was known by many, was a well-known & active figure in the Royals athletic department, but also the 10th Region as a whole. Murph would be proud of this year's crop of 10th Region teams & the outstanding performances we have seen just four weeks into the season! :thumb:

Mustangs will find out what we are made of this week in Lexington.

Play tough Oldham County in the tournament's opening game. 7-1 Perry County Central, with the possible addition of 6'7" center Justin Johnson, losers to only Scott County without Johnson, has the bye and awaits the winner. The prize behind Door Number Three is possibly Cincinnati Roger Bacon, winners over Winton Woods and LaSalle.

8-2 Oldham County were State Semi-finalists last year, and this year have beaten Moore, Southern, Central, and Manual.

Listen to the Brossart-Oldham game live via the BMustangs.com website starting at 11:50am Wednesday.

GRC is also in the Republic Bank Classic at Lexington Catholic. They play the winner of the Paintsville / Dixie Heights game on Thursday 17th at 4:30.

Good luck to all 4 of the 10th region teams in this tourney!!!!

Randy, well done, we do have some great talent in the 10th!!!!
