Both teams are 2-1 with no common opponents

Garrard County's wins (Clay County 15-14, Lloyd Memorial 35-14) are probably more impressive than Lincoln County's (Casey County 35-23, Washington County 53-0).

Garrard County's loss (Anderson County 16-24) was a lot closer than Lincoln County's (Danville 7-51).

The game will be in Lancaster.

I think this one will be close. The coaches for these two teams are both in their fifth season. Mark Scenters' Golden Lions team won last year but Lincoln County's Mike Settles won the three before that:

2011 GC 35-25

2010 LC 28-8

2009 LC 14-7

2008 LC 40-20

Lincoln's offense has looked good against two bad defenses, but couldn't do anything against a quick defense like Danville. And Lincoln's strength is the run, which is what Garrard defends best against. On the other hand, Garrard's offense has been productive, albeit in a methodical manner. Garrard's most success has been in long, sustained drives where they run the football. Of course that plays into the strength of the Lincoln defense.

I'm thinking this will be a close ball game. Lincoln always plays well against Garrard and this Friday will be no different. Turnovers could play a key role. I'm going to pick Garrard County to win, 22-13.

As an aside, here's a historical breakdown of the Lincoln/Garrard series.

Lincoln County leads the all-time series 18-9. The series was played continually from 1974 (when Lincoln County opened) until 1987, when Lincoln's program had far exceeded that of Garrard. The series would not be restarted until 1997, and it has been played every year except 2001-02. Ironically, the late-1980s/early-1990s time period that Lincoln and Garrard didn't play was probably the golden era of football at both schools. During the nine year hiatus, Lincoln County went 83-33, with two appearances in the state finals and another in the state semifinals. Eight miles away, Garrard County was completing a 79-24 record with two losses in the regional finals. Many people in both communities talked often about how Garrard/Lincoln would have played out during that time.
