I'm curious how this paper gets the description "radical." I can't tell from a simple wiki article: Chicago Defender - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

 

Things described there don't seem radical to me but probably were very radical in an America that did not even have an integrated military yet. I also wonder how having him as a father-in-law for roughly 4 years was a great influence when she seperated and divorced his son???

I wonder why context isn't considered with him. A lot of people were called communist in the 40's and 50's just because they were pro-labor, or de-segregationist. I'm not saying he was or wasn't. I can't tell from a lot I've looked up.

The FBI has admitted to keeping a file that was supposedly destroyed in 1997. It may have been related to Dunham's relationship with Frank Marshall Davis in Hawaii. The two were known to be connected and socialized together during the early 1960s in Hawaii.

 

And less political and more financial its always fun to research the Geithner-Dunham/Soetoro-Obama connection. Obama's mother (Stanley Ann Dunham/Soetoro/Obama) worked for Tim Geithner's father (Peter Geithner) while both were in the Ford Foundation in Indonesia. Obama's mother is usually characterized as an athropologist. The fact is that she was usually living in foreign countries doing international banking. The two primary locations were Indonesia and Pakistan.

I believe I've read Valerie Jarrett and Michelle Roberts (Obama) met at Sidley and Austin in Chicago in the 80s. Now, if this was in '84, that would be the same time Tom Ayers (father of Bill Ayers), CEO of Commonwealth Edison, helped get Bernardine Dorhn hired on to Sidley and Austin.

 

Bernardine Dorhn - Hijacker of Students for a Democratic Society in the 1960s and leader of the Weather Underground throughout the '70s. Outspoken Communist who participated in the bombing of government buildings.

 

I'm not quite sure of the time frame, but there's a possibility all 3 were employed at Sidley and Austin around the same time.

Thanks for the reply Bluegrass. Not saying there isn't truth to much of the above but I do have some problems.

 

For example: this author cites a connection to her grandfather Robert Taylor (whom the article declares as having "ties to known communists."). The problem with that tie is that grandpa (Robert Taylor) died before Jarrett was born. Not sure about you but I'm not certain he would have a huge influence on someone who is born after his life.

 

Which leads the authors trail again on an obscure path. (You pointed this out very well Bluegrasscard. :thumb:) Some of the reasons for the people being decried as communist have to do with FBI files from the 40's and 50's. Anyone with a hint of history knows the Hoover called any Union leader he could find a Communist and saw Bolshevik's at every turn. It wasn't just McCarthy. The Red Scare was more than one Congressman from Wisconsin. In fact my own grandfather was probably a communist to Mr. Hoover. He was an organizer for the United Steel Workers in EKY in the late 40's and early 50's before moving to CKY and later Louisville as a Negotiator for United Steel Workers. Any worker's union was communist then. Add to that these were African-Americans who were working and reporting on Civil Rights issues and you have a slew of Commies like Medgar Evers, Martin Luther King, Jr., and others.

 

It's obvious that anyone who wants to see "boogie men" will see them. Whether Jarrett or the Obama's are card carrying Communists in drag, I don't know. But there is very little real evidence to me that this is true. Socialist in approach? Very likely. Communist? I don't think so, IMO. For what it's worth, I did not vote for Obama and don't intend to this election either. I see too many other real issues with policy than to go looking for spectres and connecting dots that aren't as strongly tied as some think, or wish. :thumb:

It's like the whole Jarrett was from Iran thing. She wasn't from Iran. She was born there, the daughter of 2 American citizens.

My son was born in KY but moved with us to Virginia when he was 8 months old. He's from Virginia because that is the experience that has shaped him and where he has spent the vast majority of his life. (He is however a good UK fan and that is something to be thankful for.)

If being born in the US makes Obama a 'natural born Citizen' of the US does being born in Iran make Jarrett a 'natural born' citizen of Iran?

 

The circumstances of key players birth is interesting in some of these cases. Jus sanguinis, as you point out, has always been the primary factor in establishing natural citizenship. The immigration act of 1790 even tried to codify it into law. But it was dropped in the 1795 version of the same act. The current fun in some circles is to bring up Romney's father being born in Mexico. George Romney was defintely born in Mexico and Mitt was definitely born in Michigan. George did briefly run for President years ago. And the nbC questions did come up then - about George. But some people want to say Mitt is not eligible.

Valerie Jarrett's mother, Barbara Taylor Bowman, runs the Erikson Institute in Chicago.

 

Tom Ayers, father of Bill Ayers served on the Erikson board as did Bill Ayers’ wife Bernardine Dohrn.

 

So we can see the close ties between Valerie's mother, Barbara, and the Ayers family via the Erikson Institute. Unless Valerie has completely avoided contact with her mother, we see the clear possibility of an Ayers/Valerie connection.

 

But the connection still remains to be speculation...
