July 13, 201214 yr I think there are a few blatant oversights and a few that are way off the mark. Where are Tiananmen Square protests, the Berlin Wall coming down, the Branch Davidian compound incident, the Apollo 11 landing on the moon, the Munich Olympic hostage situation, the Exxon Valdez oil spill, ANYTHING from the Vietnam conflict... And come on...the death of Whitney Houston?? William & Kate's wedding?? Really? Major television events - maybe. But are they bigger than the first moon landing, of all things????? I totally get what you are saying, and you obviously have a good grasp of history. But, any survey like this is going to be slanted toward the more recent events. I remember exactly the moment in time I watched some of the events on the list, and others really didn't mean that much to me. A few polarizing moments that didn't make the list: 1. Prince Charles and Lady Di's wedding. Cable wasn't relevant yet, and it seemed like the whole country watched. I didn't care, but it seemed like a big deal. 2. Son of Sam Murders. Again, this was headline news every day. Remember very little about it, but it sure seemed like a big deal. 3. Atlanta child murders. Again, don't remember much about it, but it sure was the lead story on every news show for a good deal of time. 4. The tylenol story. I remember a bit more about this and the whole country seemed to be in a panic. If you've ever had trouble opening a safety seal container, you've got this one to thank for it. A few that made the list and transcended into the era of cable: 1. The Shuttle disaster. As evidenced in the thread, this one still evokes sharp images. 2. The OJ verdict. 3. 9/11. What more to say.
July 13, 201214 yr When I saw the list on tv the other day they showed the speach that President Obama gave announcing officially the death of Bin Laden but one of the images that is most memorable for me from that night is when they announced that Bin Laden was dead during the Boston game on Fox and the entired crowd cheered and started chanting USA. That's something I will never forget.
