I love our 4-4. It is our base defense and very similar to the wide tackle six. But, if we get 4 WRs and 1 RB, our 4-4 becomes a 3-5. As soon as a TE or RB gets added back to the box, we are back in our 4-4...... Most of the time.

Glen McNew does this but only if they run WR screens. Of course 90% of teams that will go 4 wide will do this unless it's more of a package for them.

For everyone that says they'll screen, run 4 vets or whatever do you think the team is going to stay in a 6 man front against 4 wide? What do you think a 425 turns into against double TE full house backfields? Or 353/335 going to line up against run heavy sets? The wide tackle six would just adjust to another front. There are a lot more teams that think they are good at 4 veers on a Friday night than teams that honestly are good at it.

 

Well if they adjust out to cover the 2s it would be a 44 to me. And football is just a giant game of chess. If you move them out I'll just start running stretch and slants. But a lot depends on mine and their personnel.

 

As far as going four verts, I have 6'1-6'5 kids that can fly out the wazoo. It wouldn't and hasn't been a problem for us.

The main point was that a defense expands and contracts as an offense does. No one is going to sit in a 62 when an offense expands just like teams aren't going to stay in a 335 when an offense contracts.

 

You're a lucky man to have 6'1-6'5 kids that can fly. That is not typical I would say. Very few schools here in KY are going to have 4 of those year in and year out.

We're around the tenth largest school in Georgia. We have those kids all over the place but we've had exactly one 6'5 280 lineman in my 10 years so we have to spread the ball around.
