Bracken County Needs Coach?

Featured Replies

It gets better than Dudley Hilton at REBUILDING programs?

You must not have been around football very long.

He started Breathitt, they've only had 2 coaches. He turned around Bell, the year before he got there they were 0-10 and in the first year they were 5-5 and in the second year they teid for district champs. The rest is history. Bourbon had 15 losing season in a row and had never won a playoff gameand in the first year they won the state championship.

It is easy to coach when you have 75 players and several DI players.

I really could care less who bracken hires, good luck to them and this asst. if he wants the job.

Dudley is a great coach--no doubt about it. But--he is not the end all/be all in this state when it comes to coaching talent.

I simply alluded to the fact that there is at least one person with better qualifications (if I wanted to be a jerk--I would have said that he was a miserable coach and pointed out all of the others who I feel would do a better job).

Besides--there is a big difference between the guy that you are talking about AND Dudley Hilton. (Unless he is a clone of Dudley).

In regard to your comment about my experience around football--you should probably make some attempt to know who you are talking to before you make a stupid comment like that. I didn't question your knowledge of football. I have a pretty good feeling mine is good enough.

I will be sure to keep my thoughts to myself the next time that I try to bring some good news to the fans of Bracken County.

I stated this on another thread but believe it needs to be said again. Dudley is a very good coach. He does a tremendous job and always seems to win. I am not trying to take anything away from Dudley since I do like the man and respect him, however, he did not turn Bourbon County around. The turnaround started under the direction of Roger Gruniesen with a staff that included Wes Tipton, Aaron Dahlstrom, Criag Foley and Mark Willoughby. That was the turn around with the first ever playoff appearance in school history with a team that was not full of talented kids but full of determined kids. The Freshmen that probably were Srs. the year Dudley came were undeafeated in Fresh & JV to my knowledge. (This info coming from the coaches on that staff) Dudley still had to organize, prepare, and create the chemistry that championship team had but he was not the sole reason for Bo Co's success. Still respect and love him but believe that he is credited way too much for that.

What I dont understand about this statement was that if Gruniesen and company turned this program around, then why did Dudley inherit a team with only 23 players on a lagre 2A school(11 of which were 9th graders)? A team that is turned around usually has at least 35 players. The second year that Dudley was their they had 45 players. The year before Dudley got their they won 3 games and lost several games badly, and in Dudleys first year they only lost 3 games. Also, if the program was in such good shape, how come they gave Dudley and his wife all that money to come there? They had all they needed right under their nose. Bourbon is not the only place that he has rebuilt either. I mean he is the 5th winningest coach in Ky. high school football history. So, if you like him or not at least give him his due. ;)

If you read the original post, I stated that I am not taking anything away from Dudley. I like the man and respect him. He does a tremendous job. Also, I stated the rebuilding started with the staff I mentioned. They did not completely turn the program around but made HUGE Steps in the right direction. Therefore, It is my belief that one without the other would not have happened as quickly as it did. The steps the staff with Gruniesen, Foley, Dahlstrom, Bellinger, Davis (Mercer Co) ,etc. did nothing but give a solid foundation for anyone following that staff. Could anyone that took over have been as successful as Dudley? I don't know but I will say if I would have been a betting man I would have to put my money on Dudley. Would a Chuck Smith, David Buchanan, etc. have had the same success? Probably. Dudley is an excellent coach and I respect him alot. It may have taken 3 years compared to 1 to win the state. I simply meant the staff mentioned took a school that had never made it to the playoffs in school history and that began the building process. Dudley continued it and built upon it.

Saw where you said Dudley got "too much credit for that" and will have to disagree. Like all the examples I gave earlier I would have to disagree with anybody rebuilding this program but Dudley Hilton. I dont know what year you are referring to when you say they took them to the playoffs for the first time, but I know that I say Bourbon play in the playoffs in 1992 and that is a long way from 1997. I also saw on TV in 1997 where a kid said " I knew that we could win, we just needed coaching and disciple on the team" So I will have to respectfully disagree that Dudley got too much credit for building Bourbon. Now back to the Bracken County Polar Bears.
