  1. Thanks to Northern Kentucky Family & Cosmetic Dentistry -"Making Northern Kentucky Smile" for sponsoring our 2016 Northern Kentucky Power Rankings! We encourage everyone to patronize all of our sponsors, and you can visit Northern Kentucky Family & Cosmetic Dentistry at 2047 Centennial Boulevard in Independence, KY. THE RANKINGS: 10) Scott (4A) – Many expected to see more out of the Eagles this Friday past, as Scott took the field for the first time following their most successful season in program history. New Cath came out looking to play the spoiler, as they beat the Eagles by 26 on Saturday, handing them a 21-47 loss in Newport. It will be interesting to see how well Scott can rebound as they take on the 5A Dixie Heights Colonels this week in their home opener. Junior quarterback Nelson Perrin had a 95 yard kickoff return for the Eagles on Saturday, along with 78 yards passing for 1 TD, as well as 44 yards and 1 TD rushing. Scott will also be looking to improve on their 240 total yards offense and 5 fumbles from Saturday when they host Dixie this Friday. 9) Conner (6A) – No action this week for the Cougars. After finishing 8-4 last year, there were many who were surprised by the overall positive show last year by Conner. However, Conner graduated 19 seniors last year including their starting quarterback, among others. Expectations for this season are all across the board when it comes to the Cougars. Things have been quiet in Hebron in the off-season, but Conner looks to open things in winning fashion when they head to Florence to take on 6A district rival Boone County in their opener. Boone is coming in Friday following a 18-41 loss to 3A Lexington Catholic, although the Rebels surprised many by leading Lex Cath 12-7 in the second quarter of their game last week. Friday’s game should be an interesting gauge of Conner and Boone County both. 8) Beechwood (1A) – No action this week for the Tigers. Beechwood will open their 2016 season this year against the 2A Lloyd Juggernauts, with the Juggs coming in fresh off a romping 38 point shutout over 2A Walton-Verona. Beechwood and Lloyd have only faced off 4 times in the last decade, with the Tigers winning all 4 contests. Coach Rash faced a daunting task in the off-season, having to find replacements to graduated seniors Kyle Fieger, Brett Slusher, and Ethan Stringer. Junior quarterback Brayden Burch and senior RB Aiden Justice will be leading the offensive charge for the Tigers, but the defense remains the big question about Beechwood’s game this season. We’ll see how they stack up this Friday in Ft. Mitchell. 7) Newport Central Catholic (2A) – The Thoroughbreds came out with a purpose in their season opener this past Saturday, thumping the 4A Scott Eagles 47-21 at home in Newport. New Cath was looking to avenge a messy 7-8 loss from their opening game against the Eagles last season, and did so on the back of senior QB Henschen, who went 6-8 and 176 yards passing, and rushed for an additional 55 yards. WR Austin Neff had two receptions for 100 yards with a touchdown on each, and RB Jason Decker averaged over 10 yards a piece on each of his 8 carries, with a touchdown of his own. Senior LB Sutkamp logged 7 solo tackles in the victory. New Cath travels to Union this week to take on the 6A Cooper Jaguars on Friday. 6) Dixie Heights (5A) – No action this past week for the Red Colonels. We will begin to have a look at what Coach Brossart has done with the Dixie program in the off-season when they open their season this Friday in Taylor Mill against the 4A Scott Eagles. After struggling last season with a large group of new starters, the Colonels will be coming in with a more seasoned and composed team on both sides of the ball. Look for transfer Giante Hicks to have a big game for Dixie as they work to improve on their 3-8 record from last year. 5) Covington Catholic (5A) – The Colonels started off their season this year in Union against the 6A Ryle Raiders, but didn’t manage to start off with one in the W column. Ryle’s size was difficult to overcome this week, and Cov Cath struggled to push to the end zone, opting twice for field goals via senior kicker Kloska. Sophomore RB McGinness had a big first half, but was held to 22 yards rushing in the second half. Junior quarterback AJ Mayer had some difficulty connecting with his receiving corps – something that the Coach Eviston will no doubt be working on correcting as Cov Cath prepares to take on Ohio DI team Oak Hills in the Skyline Crosstown Showdown this week at Mount St. Joseph. The Colonels showed some resilience and never let Ryle run away with the game, but will be hard at work improving their game as they make their way through a very challenging 2016 schedule. 4) Cooper (6A) – Unlike last year, Cooper started off this season with a loss after traveling to 5A Highlands’ David Cecil Memorial Stadium to take on the Birds in their opener for the second year in a row. It was a high scoring affair, and even after the Jags jumped out to a 21-6 lead in the first quarter, Highlands was able to wear them down, and eventually pull ahead in the 4th quarter to come out on top 52-42. Cooper’s stud RB Dante Hendrix was covered heavily, and was held to a single touchdown on Friday, with Jaden Jackson, Shea Burns, Justin Schlarman and QG Jared Lonaker adding touchdowns as well. Cooper will be dusting themselves off and working on tightening things up for this week’s home opener against the 2A Newport Catholic Thoroughbreds. 3) Highlands (5A) – After last season’s opening loss to the 6A Cooper Jaguars, there were many predicting a repeat loss for the Birds this past Friday, but Coach Weinrich proved that, as in years past, the Highlands offseason conditioning makes their team one of THE hardest to beat in the 4th quarter. The Bluebirds came out on top of a shootout in Ft. Thomas, beating the Jags 52-42. Offensively, the two teams were within 9 total offensive yards of one another, but Highlands won the battle for field position, and their conversion of a touchdown off a Cooper fumble ended up being the deciding factors in the victory for the Birds. Highlands will travel down the road to Claryville to take on the 6A Campbell County Camels this week. 2) Ryle (6A) – It took less than 3 minutes for the Raiders to get their first points of the 2016 season. Tanner Morgan orchestrated a 7-play, 82 yard drive that ended with 7 points on the scoreboard for Ryle, and proved that they were prepared to grind it out all night against 5A Covington Catholic. The Raiders won 31-13, with Morgan ending his night with nearly 300 yards and 2 TDs passing, and an additional rushing TD to boot. RB Chisholm rushed for almost 150 yards and had 1 TD, and WR Cusick added 100 yards receiving and a TD of his own. Ryle ended the night with over 550 total offensive yards, and kept Cov Cath’s offense to just over 300 yards. Ryle takes on 6A Henry Clay in the 2016 Bluegrass Bowl. The game can be streamed live via PrepSpin.com 1) Simon Kenton (6A) – The Pioneers had a gimme in week 0 with their matchup against the Christian Academy Louisville Centurions, winning 41-14 in Louisville on Friday night. CAL, who is currently BGP’s #2 team in 2A, just couldn’t stand up against 6A Simon Kenton. Racke led the offense to over 400 total yards, with two touchdowns passing and one rushing. Senior linebacker Brian Carter led the defense with 6 solo tackles and 5 assisted tackles. We will learn a lot more what the ‘Neers are made of when they host the 6A Bryan Station Defenders in Independence this Friday. Trending Up: 2A Holy Cross – The Indians came out a little slow in the first quarter, failing to put any points on the board, but they kicked it up in the second quarter scoring 4 times and eventually winning 42-7 over crosstown rivals 4A Holmes. 2A Lloyd Memorial – The Juggs made a statement in their season opener, shutting out 2A district rival Walton-Verona in a 38-0 win over the Wildcats. Senior RB Justin Durham rushed for 4 touchdowns. 5A Highlands – The Birds beat 6A Cooper in week 0, getting revenge for a week 0 loss to the Jags last season. Highlands showed that they are multi-dimensional, and have the ability to fight through all 48 minutes of the game. Highlands moved up from a #4 pre-season ranking in NKY to the #3 spot. Trending Down: 2A Walton-Verona – The Wildcats suffered a tough loss on Friday, failing to score in a 0-38 loss to the 2A Lloyd Memorial Juggernauts. Walton-Verona remains unranked in NKY. 4A Scott – The Eagles took a tough loss this week at the hands of 2A Newport Catholic . It came as a surprise to many following a banner season for Scott last year. The Eagles drop from a #6 NKY pre-season ranking to #10. 6A Cooper – The Jags started off at #3 in Northern Kentucky, but dropped to #4 this week after losing to the 5A Highlands Bluebirds in their season opener. They played hard for much of the game, but handed over too much positive field position to the Birds, including a fumble turned over inside of their own 20 yard line resulting in a Highlands TD. Player Of The Week: Justin Durham (Lloyd Memorial) Lloyd’s senior running back posted 175 yards and 4 touchdowns rushing for the Juggs this week in their 38-0 win over Walton-Verona. Durham nearly tripled Walton-Verona’s first half 37 offensive yards with his own 93 yards in the first half of the game. Week 1 Game Of The Week: Bellevue (1A) vs. Dayton (1A) There are less than 2 miles separating these two single-A river schools. Both programs have struggled to see success on a state level in recent years, but there is always a lot of emotion packed into their meetings on the field. Bellevue has dominated the series in recent years, and won their two regular season matchups by a combined score of 73-0. On Friday the Dayton Green Devils host the first of their two meetings this season, and we’ll see if the Bellevue Tigers continue the domination, or if Dayton can fight them off this year.
  2. Thanks to Northern Kentucky Family & Cosmetic Dentistry - "Making Northern Kentucky Smile" for sponsoring our 2016 Northern Kentucky Power Rankings! We encourage everyone to patronize all of our sponsors, and you can visit Northern Kentucky Family & Cosmetic Dentistry at 2047 Centennial Boulevard in Independence, KY. Returning for 2016, BluegrassPreps is excited to again roll out weekly football Power Rankings for each of the regions around the state. With each week's Power Rankings, we will be looking to rank the top ten teams in each region - regardless of class - against the other teams in their region. Throughout the season, we will be accounting for the results of all the games throughout the region, including the strength of each opponent played, points scored, points allowed, along with several other statistics on each side of the ball. We will also be featuring a highlighted "Game Of The Week", and moving forward, will be re-capping the previous games of the week, as well as highlighting regional "Big Risers" and "Big Droppers" as various teams improve their performance and other teams fall back. The BGP Power Rankings will also feature a "Player Of The Week". THE RANKINGS: 10) Conner (6A) – Conner is probably the biggest overall question mark on the top 10. They finished up the 2015 season with a respectable 8-4 record, but the only fellow 6A program they were only able to put up wins on was a struggling Campbell County program. They also struggled against smaller teams on more than one occasion. This year Coach Trosper needs to find a new starting QB among the spots vacated by 19 graduated seniors from last season. The Cougars do have the benefit of a widespread combination of players returning across the board, but they are still left with an equal number of positions to fill. It’s tough to judge how the 2016 season will go for Conner at this point, but the general sniff-test says that there will be some positive strides made in Hebron this year. 9) Beechwood (1A) – Beechwood had an incredibly solid season in 2015, making their way to the 1A finals with only a single loss, suffered at the hands of 5A Covington Catholic. Coach Noel Rash will have his hands full this season, having to replace graduated senior standouts Kyle Fieger, Brett Slusher, and Ethan Stringer. There is a lot that remains to be seen for the Tigers this season, having to replace over half of their starters on both sides of the ball. Junior quarterback Brayden Burch is likely to get the nod as starter in 2016, and Aiden Justice, Logan Castleman, and Eddie Erdman look to be big names in Ft. Mitchell this upcoming season. 8) Newport Central Catholic (2A) – Not everyone expected New Cath to make it to the finals last year, especially after starting off their season to a 2-4 record, but the Breds were able to put things together when it mattered, only falling short to the Mayfield Cardinals by 10 points in the 2A championship game. This season they will have senior Patrick Henschen back at QB, but Coach Wagner is faced with a difficult task in finding an appropriate replacement to offensive workhorse Jacob Smith. Defensively, the line and linebacking corps will both be question marks, with many starters to be determined. Look for Austin Neff, Job Freppon and Kurtis Sutkamp to be leaders on the defensive team. 7) Dixie Heights (5A) – Coach Brossart has shown that he can make things happen at Dixie. It was only two seasons ago that he led the Colonels to the 6A state finals, finishing as runners up. Last year proved to be a struggle for Dixie though, after having graduated a very talented class of seniors. After fighting their way through a 3-8 season last year with a team built on young starters, the Colonels are going to come out swinging with virtually a full team of returning starters. Senior Noah Smedley will likely be leading the offensive charge at QB, with Winton Woods (OH) transfer Giante Hicks coming in to support at wide receiver. Seniors Cameron Barrett, Austin Rice, and Logan Robinson will be leading the defensive team for Dixie. 6) Scott (4A) – Coach Dan Woolley helped bring a lot of excitement to Taylor Mill in 2015. He led the Scott Eagles to the best season in their program’s history, finishing off with a 10-3 record. They will undoubtedly be looking to build on their successes this season and trying to lengthen their run in the playoffs. Relying equally on their returning senior and junior starters this season, and with many additional juniors and sophomores coming into the 2016 with significant playing time under their belts, things are looking good at Scott. The Eagles will be counting themselves amongst teams looking to find a new starting quarterback after losing Danny Fitzgerald to graduation. You can expect to see a big season offensively from both Nelson Perrin and Mi’rell Englemon. 5) Covington Catholic (5A) – In Coach Eddie Eviston’s second year as head coach he will certainly be looking to improve on the 0-4 start to last year’s season. The only change to their schedule this year will be replacing last season’s Cincy St. X game with a game against Oak Hills (OH). The big question for the Colonels program remains “Will this year be the year you beat Highlands?” Returning quarterback AJ Mayer will look to do just that, leading an offense that relies on a solid receiver corps, RB Casey McGinness, and line anchored by seniors Dylan Silbernagel and D1 recruit Hunter Ziegelmeyer. Defensively they will be looking to replace starters on the line, in the linebacking corps, and in the backfield, and will be turning to Alex Shelton, Kameron Butler, and Anthony Best for leadership. The Colonels look to be stronger than last year, but will still have to beat the Highlands Bluebirds in the 3rd round of the playoffs in order to make it to Bowling Green. 4) Highlands (5A) – The 2015 season didn’t exactly stand out as one of Highlands’ best years, with six losses on the season including three to other Northern Kentucky teams (Cooper, Ryle and Simon Kenton). However, to say that Highlands was “bad” last year would be completely inaccurate. Highlands shrugged off their rough start last year, visibly improving week to week throughout the season. This season the Birds will be looking to carry over their development from last year as they face a repeat of their regular season schedule. QB is one of the only skill positions Highlands will be replacing on either side of the ball, with Sr. Brady Gosney likely to be appearing under center. Replacing starters lost to graduation on the OL and DL will be their other challenge this season, but Coach Weinrich and the Highlands coaching staff are undoubtedly on top of things. Look to see Highlands make a deep playoff run this season, and potentially an appearance in the 5A championship game. 3) Cooper (6A) – Cooper was a surprise to many last season, but not so much to those inside the Jaguar football team. This year looks to be another solid year for the Jags with D1 recruit Dante Hendrix and Jaden Jackson returning to the offensive side of the ball for their senior years. However, Coach Borchers is tasked with developing a new starting quarterback this season. Their offensive line should be solid, but after losing their OL coach in the off season it will be interesting to see what kind of changes are made to play at the offensive line of scrimmage. The defensive skills positions look solid for the Jaguars, with Hendrix once again featured as a standout, but their D-line will be a big question mark going into the 2016 season, as well as some of their linebacking corps. 2) Ryle (6A) – Ryle had a few hiccups in their 2015 season, finishing 3rd in the NKY power rankings. With star quarterback Tanner Morgan, RB Jake Chisolm and WR Bryce Ashley all returning on offense, there isn’t much doubt about their offensive skill positions. Most of their 2016 OL saw significant starting time over the course of the season last year, and will bring a solid front to the Raider offense. On defense, similarly, there are numerous skills players returning, and senior middle linebacker Jackson High will lead their defensive charge. Coach Engler has a lot to work with at Ryle this season, and Ryle will be one of the toughest teams to beat amongst the NKY programs. 1) Simon Kenton (6A) – There’s no doubt that Simon Kenton was the top Northern Kentucky football program in 2015. They were the only NKY team to go 10-0 in the regular season, and had their season ended in the state semifinals to the 6A runners up, Lafayette. With third year starter Cameron Racke returning under center for his senior year, and Sr. Dylan Hampton in the backfield, there are high expectations for the Pioneer offense this year. The bigger task for Jeff Marksberry and the rest of the SK coaching staff will be replacing over half of their defensive starters for the 2016 season. However, with a solid group moving up from the undefeated 2015 junior varsity squad, there is a lot for the coaches to work with as they near the opening kickoff of the 2016 season. Simon Kenton is once again the team to beat in Northern Kentucky. Honorable Mention: Campbell County, Holy Cross Week 0 Game Of The Week: Scott (4A) vs. Newport Central Catholic (2A) The Eagles travel to Newport to take on the Thoroughbreds. Last year this game was decided by 1 point, with Scott eking out an 8-7 victory. It will be interesting to see how the two programs have developed over the subsequent months as they start things off at 7:00pm on Saturday, August 20th.
  3. THE RANKINGS: 10) Beechwood (1A) 1-0 – Beechwood opened their season by beating 2A Lloyd in Ft. Mitchell this past Friday 12-0. The Tigers struggled on offense, with only 155 total yards – 134 of which were amassed in the air. Junior Brayden Burch had his first start at QB, passing for 116 yards. Beechwood’s only offensive points came on a 22 yard Daniel Mescher field goal in the 3rd quarter. The remaining points were scored on a blocked punt recovered for a safety, and a kickoff return for TD. The Tigers host 2A Somerset this Friday. 9) Conner (6A) 1-0 – Conner opened up their season in Florence at 6A district rival Boone County. Senior QB Walker Buelow connected for 12 of his 20 pass attempts, racking up 238 yards passing and 2 TD’s, and rushed for an additional 76 yards. The Cougars played 3 different QB’s on Friday, and had an additional 3 RB’s in the backfield, pointing to numerous offensive options this season. Senior Austin Cain led the defense with 5 tackles. Conner travels to Independence this week to take on 6A district rival Simon Kenton. 8) Newport Central Catholic (2A) 1-1 – The Breds took one on the chin this past Friday. After a strong 26 point win in week 0, Newport Catholic ran into a roadblock in the 6A Cooper Jaguars, losing 14-45 to the Jags. New Cath had a respectable 215 yards on the ground, but the story of the game was passing. Cooper stacked up 342 yards passing, while New Cath’s QB Henschen was only able to connect on 3 of his 13 attempts, for 11 of their total 30 yards passing. The Thoroughbreds look to improve this Friday when they host 6A Campbell County. 7) Dixie Heights (5A) 1-0 – A lot remains to be seen about how things are going at Dixie, but starting off the season with a win against a season they lost to last year is a undeniable step in the right direction for the Colonels. After a rough week dealing with the loss of a former teammate, Colson Machlitt, the Colonels played hard, with RB Jose Torres giving a great performance that included 219 total yards and 4 touchdowns. Dixie takes on Milford (OH) at home this Friday. 5T) Covington Catholic (5A) 1-1 – The Colonels racked up an impressive 8 touchdowns in Thursday nights won over Oak Hills (OH). Their biggest lead of the game was 29 points at the end of the 4th quarter, but by the time the final whistle blew, their lead had diminished to 8 points with the final score 56-48. Cov Cath will take the win, though, including 4 passing TD’s and 1 rushing TD by quarterback AJ Mayer, and an impressive 350 all-purpose yards and 3 TD’s by sophomore running back Casey McGinness. The Colonels host Sycamore (OH) this week in Park Hills. 5T) Cooper (6A) 1-1 – Cooper beat 2A New Cath by 35 in week 1 of the 2015 season, and similarly, they beat them by 31 points in week 1 this season. The Jags posted 565 yards of offense on Friday in the Skyline Crosstown Showdown, with QB Lonaker throwing for 343 yards and 3 touchdowns, RB Jackson rushing for 134 yards and 2 touchdowns, and WR Hendrix receiving for 160 yards and 2 touchdowns. Cooper host 6A Bryan Station this week in Union. 4) Highlands (5A) 1-1 – After a 4th quarter win in week 0, Highlands suffered a 4th quarter loss in week 1 at the hands of 6A Campbell County. It was a sloppy game for the Birds, and there’s no doubting they will be hard at work bringing about a some changes this week as they stare down their 6A onslaught, preparing to play Scott County this week, Ryle the week after, St. Xavier the next, and then Simon Kenton the week following. 3) Campbell County (6A) 1-1 – There are a lot of thoughts about Campbell County’s victory on Friday over 5A Highlands. The fact is, the Camels won. Coach Steve Lickert (a Highlands alum) and team was the better team on the field this week, and they improve in this week’s power rankings because of it. The Camels had 367 total offensive yards to the Bluebirds’ 338 total yards, and eked out the victory on a field goal in the final seconds. Campbell County heads down the road on Friday to take on 2A Newport Catholic. 2) Ryle (6A) 2-0 – The Raiders improved to 2-0 on Friday, beating the 6A Henry Clay Blue Devils 34-28 at the Bluegrass Bowl in Lexington. Tanner Morgan went 16 for 26, passing for 153 yards and 1 touchdown. Jake Chisholm caught for 49 yards, rushed for 127 yards, and had 2 touchdowns on the ground. 1) Simon Kenton (6A) 2-0 – Simon Kenton beat the 6A Bryan Station Defenders 50-7 this past Friday. That means the Pioneers have beaten their first two opponents this season by a combined score of 91-21. They have over 900 total yards of offense, compared to the 417 yards that they’ve allowed their opponents. Until someone in NKY is able to step up and challenge the ‘Neers, there isn’t anything pointing to their being de-throned in NKY. Simon Kenton host 6A Conner this week in Independence. Trending Up: 2A Holy Cross (2-0) – The Indians are now 2-0 after shutting 2A district opponent Walton-Verona 44-0. Holy Cross has beaten their first two opponents by a combined score of 86-7. 2A Lloyd Memorial (1-1) – The Juggs didn’t win their second game of the season, but their defense impressed for a second week in a row, only allowing 3 offensive points by 1A Beechwood in their 0-12 loss to the Tigers this past Friday. 6A Campbell County (1-1) – After losing their first game of the season, the Camels were able to pull off a last-minute field goal to upset the 5A Highlands Bluebirds, previously ranked 3rd in NKY. The Camels were unranked last week in NKY. Trending Down: 2A Walton-Verona (0-2) – The Wildcats were shut out for a second week in a row, losing 0-44 to 2A Holy Cross (Cov) and have given up over 80 points this season to their opponents. 4A Scott (0-2) – A surprise to many, the Eagles have lost both of their first two games this season. Scott was beaten 7-34 this week by the 5A Dixie Heights Colonels. 5A Highlands (1-1) – After beating 6A Cooper in their season opener, there weren’t many who expected a loss to 6A Campbell County, but 4 quarters of sloppy play, the Birds lost to the Camels on a last second field goal on Friday. Player Of The Week: Jose Torres (Dixie Heights) The Colonels’ senior running back Torres had a heck of a game against Scott on Friday, rushing for over 200 yards and an impressive 4 touchdowns. Week 2 Game Of The Week: Cooper (6A) vs. Bryan Station (6A) Cooper will be welcoming Bryan Station to Union on Friday after a convincing win over 2A New Cath, while Bryan Station is going to be coming in with a chip on their shoulder after losing 7-50 to 6A Simon Kenton. Both teams have 1-1 records going into the matchup this week, with Cooper having lost to 5A Highlands and Bryan Station having beaten 4A Wayne County in week 0.
