  1. Nothing has changed at the top of this week’s Central Kentucky Power Rankings as the top 5 teams all won convincingly to make things at the top easy to figure out. The bottom 5 teams is where the water gets murky and it is becoming increasingly difficult trying to figure out how they all stack up. Needless to say there have been some insane individual performances to start the season and last week had a couple of eye opening performances from some of the studs of Central Kentucky. Let’s jump in and take a look and see what happened in Central Kentucky last week. Top Ten: 1. Scott County- Scott County used 601 yards rushing to defeat Lafayette 58-28. After trailing 28-27 early in the second half, the Cardinals scored 31 unanswered points to put the game on ice. Bronson Brown finished with 239 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns and Austin Burnett had 216 yards rushing and 6 touchdowns. Scott County travels to Fort Thomas to take on the Highlands Bluebirds on Friday, August 31. 2. Frederick Douglass- Frederick Douglass decimated Tates Creek last Friday night by the score of 48-14. Cameron Jones had another highly efficient night as he went 15-17 passing for 242 yards and 4 touchdowns, all 4 touchdowns to different receivers. Demarco Fishback caught one of the receptions for a touchdown and he also added 76 yards rushing and 3 rushing touchdowns. Next up for Frederick Douglass is a game on Friday evening with one of the top teams in 1A, the Paintsville Tigers. 3. Boyle County- Boyle County out classed Franklin County from start to finish as they won 50-7. The defense helped set up the offense on multiple occasions and the offense was efficient throughout the game. Reed Lanter went 12-14 for 236 yards and a touchdown. Reese Smith had 122 yards receiving and a touchdown on 4 receptions. Landen Bartleson and Andrew Sacco both ran for two touchdowns apiece as the Rebels are rolling along. Next up for the Rebels is the TitleTown Showdown at home against the Danville Admirals on Friday night. 4. Lexington Catholic-Don’t look now but the Lexington Catholic Knights are quietly putting up some large numbers through the air. Coming into the season it was known that Beau Allen had a stable of receivers coming back this season and that chemistry is easy to see early in the season. In the Knights 50-34 win over Ryle, Beau Allen completed 23-31 passes for 357 yards and 7 touchdowns. It is safe to say that the Knights’ aerial assault isn’t to be slighted and everyone should keep an eye on their progress. 5. Madison Central- Madison Central had an easy victory over Woodford County last week as they won 38-6. Madison Central has given up a total of 13 points so far this season which is tied for second best amongst all 6A teams at the moment. Their first true test will come against a Southwestern team that is off to a hot start of their own. Madison Central will play Southwestern this Friday evening at Madison Southern. 6. Anderson County- Anderson County enjoyed a huge 34-19 win over Meade County this past Friday but in doing so have reportedly lost the services of one of their best players in Zach Labhart. Luckily Zach is a junior so hopefully he will be back healthy for his senior season. In the meanwhile Anderson County will need to go to The Next Man Up as they work to build on their early season success. The next team up for Anderson County is Mercer County at Mercer County this Friday night. 7. Henry Clay- Henry Clay didn’t score a single point last Friday as they were shutout 41-0 by the #1 team in 5A, Covington Catholic. They only dropped one spot this week because of the strength of their opponent as well as the uncertainty in the bottom half of the top ten. However, they won’t get many passes going forward the rest of the season. If they plan to become a force in the CKY area then they need to forget last week and focus on improving. Next up for Henry Clay is another power from a different classification, at 4A power Johnson Central on Friday evening. 8. Lafayette- Lafayette joins the top ten for the first time this season and it comes after a 58-28 loss to Scott County. At one point Lafayette was ahead 28-27 and for almost three quarters they went toe-to-toe against one of the best teams in the state. With that showing they deserve a chance to crack the power rankings so we can see what Lafayette can do. Good luck to the Generals as they face Lexington Catholic at home this Friday night. 9. Danville- The Danville Admirals lost 28-10 at Corbin last week and truthfully they gave a better showing than I expected. A couple of weeks ago after the Admirals scrimmaged Southwestern they were written off by many people. A shaky start against Woodford County didn’t help matters but the second half of that game began the turnaround. Their game last week against Corbin was a promising sign for some Admiral fans as many felt they held their own and had a couple of plays gone the other way it may have been a different game. The Admirals will have another chance to prove they are improving rapidly as they will face Boyle County in the TitleTown Showdown at Boyle County on Friday night. 10. Franklin County- Franklin County took a thumping at the hands of Boyle County last Saturday evening. That is now in the past and it is time to move on. There is a lot of season left and Franklin County has a favorable schedule that should allow them to see success as long as they improve weekly. I expect them to remain in the Power Rankings all season but for now we’ll see what happens each week and go from there. Next up for Franklin County is a good bounce back game against Woodford County on Friday night. Team on the Rise: Bourbon County: Bourbon County is now 2-0 on the season. Under Head Coach John Hodge, Bourbon County has put together some strong teams with talent that have had postseason success. Once again Bourbon County is off to a good start to the season with a strong chance to join the top ten of the CKY Power Rankings. Last week’s Game of the Week results: Pikeville 50 Lexington Christian 7 Pikeville took Lexington Christian to the woodshed last weekend as I totally missed on what I thought would be a good and exciting game. They literally did whatever they wanted to on the field last week and if they were a CKY school they would have some players mentioned in the Top Performers section of this article. Lexington Christian had just cracked the top ten of the Power Rankings last week so I hated to see them leave so soon but we all know that Lexington Christian will have opportunities coming up to show that Pikeville is a strong team despite them being a 1A school. I expect to see Lexington Christian bounce back soon from this disappointment. Game of the Week-8/31/18 Scott County at Highlands: This game will tell us a couple of things. Is Scott County as good as we think? Is Highlands back? The Highlands faithful feels like this year’s team marks the turnaround to return to the expected winning ways of Highlands football. Scott County destroyed Highlands last year but this year the game is at Highlands and there is a new attitude in Fort Thomas. I’ll be watching the results of this one closely. Wandale Robinson Watch: I’m creating a new section for the weekly article called the Wandale Robinson Watch. He is the Mr. Football front runner and if we are being honest he’d be an easy choice for a Top Performer every week. Instead of having him take a spot we all know he’ll deserve weekly I’m just going to give him his own section and we can watch his stats weekly and yearly. Last week vs Estill County: 7 rushes, 108 yards, 2 touchdowns 3 receptions, 121 yards, 2 touchdowns 63 yard punt return TD 1 interception 11 total tackles(8 solo) Yearly stats to date: 34 rushes, 323 yards, 4 touchdowns 4 receptions, 196 yards, 3 touchdowns 1 punt return touchdown 8 total touchdowns 16 total tackles(9 solo) 1 interception Player of the Week: Beau Allen- Lexington Catholic- 23-31, 357 yards, 7 touchdowns Top Performers: Cameron Jones-Frederick Douglass-QB-15-17-242 yards, 4 touchdowns Bronson Brown-Scott County-RB-239 yards rushing, 2 rushing touchdowns Austin Burnett-Scott County-RB-216 yards, 6 rushing touchdowns CaMarr Myers-Bourbon County-RB-230 yards, 3 touchdowns
  2. As we enter September things are starting to shuffle a little bit in the Central Kentucky Area. Teams we didn’t know much about are starting to grow and show confidence. Teams we knew about are performing to expectations, exceeding expectations or failing to live up to expectations. As we get deeper into September teams should be getting better each day but that isn’t always the case. How is your favorite team doing right now? Let’s take a look. Top Ten: 1. Scott County(6A, 3-0)- Scott County grabbed their third victory of the year as they defeated Highlands 28-7 in a weather shortened game. Using their strong ground game they churned out 226 yards rushing. Austin Burnett had 121 of those yards and he also had a touchdown as well. Next up for Scott County is Archbishop Moeller(OH) this Friday night. 2. Frederick Douglass(6A, 3-0)- Frederick Douglass also grabbed their third win of the season as they dismantled Paintsville 57-7. Cameron Jones once again flashed his efficiency in passing the ball as he was 14-18 for 283 yards and 3 touchdowns. Demarco Fishback caught all 3 of those touchdown passes and Fishback also added 2 more touchdowns on the ground for a total of 5 touchdowns in the game. Next up for Frederick Douglass will be Lafayette on Friday night. 3. Boyle County(3A, 3-0)- The Rebels are still rolling along and while the scoreboard says they won 34-17 against Danville this game was more of a grind-it-out type of win for Boyle County. Landen Bartleson finished the game with 3 rushing touchdowns to help lead Boyle County past their crosstown rival, the Danville Admirals. Next up for the Rebels will be Wayne County this Friday night. 4. Lexington Catholic(3A, 3-0)- Lexington Catholic continues to show a superior passing offense as they manhandled Lafayette 33-7. Beau Allen passed for 396 yards and 4 touchdowns and Lexington Catholic continues to put up huge numbers in the air and on the scoreboard. Next up for Lexington Catholic is crosstown private school rival, Lexington Christian Academy. 5. Anderson County(5A, 3-0)- Anderson County is the first team to make a move in the rankings this week as they won a weather shortened game against Mercer County by the score of 28-0. Anderson County is a team that has been exceeding my expectations so far but their schedule will get tougher as the season continues and we will learn more about them then. Next up for Anderson County will be Valley. 6. Madison Central(6A, 2-1)– Madison Central struggled to get anything going against a strong Southwestern team this past weekend. As a result they slide down a spot in the Power Rankings but never fear, crosstown rival, Madison Southern is their next opponent and that looks to be a favorable matchup for a bounce back game. 7. Danville(2A, 1-2)- Danville is the only team with a losing record in this week’s rankings and to be quite honest I flirted with the possibility of ranking them as high as #5. Danville is better than their record suggests as they have completed the toughest part of their schedule after last week’s loss to Boyle County. They have a winnable matchup against Pulaski County this week and my prediction is that this will be the lowest that we will see Danville ranked the rest of the season. 8. Franklin County(4A, 2-1)- Franklin County enjoyed a big 48-24 win over Woodford County last Friday night. Nick Broyles was 12-18 passing for 212 yards and 4 touchdowns and Franklin County put up 262 yards rushing to go along with Broyles passing yards. Franklin County will have this week off as the prepare for their next game on September 14th at Anderson County. 9. Montgomery County(5A, 2-1)-Montgomery County enters the Power Rankings for the first time this season after defeating Harrison County 34-14 last weekend. Justin Krossy and Josh Wheaton have been carrying the load for Montgomery County on the ground this year and Wide Receiver, Pharoah Davis has been the team’s leading receiver to give Montgomery County three viable threats on offense. Huge game this week for Montgomery County as they travel to George Rogers Clark to take on their rival. 10. George Rogers Clark(6A, 2-1)- George Rogers Clark also enters the Power Rankings for the first time this season as well. After starting off the season being shut out by Anderson County, George Rogers Clark has won two games in a row and look to make it three in a row this Friday night against rival Montgomery County. As expected, Nitavius Thomas has been a stud for GRC and he looks to carry them to a victory this Friday night. Teams on the Rise: There are several teams in the Central Kentucky Area that have caught my eye this past week. Two entered the Power Rankings this week and a couple more are worthy of being discussed in those ranks as well. West Jessamine(5A, 2-1)- West Jessamine has had a good start to the season after losing in Week 1. We should learn more about them after their matchup with Russell County this week. Lincoln County(5A, 2-1)- Lincoln County suffered a humiliating loss in Week 1 but have won two in a row, including a 35-20 win against rival, Garrard County. A matchup against a better-than-their-record-suggests, East Jessamine team, is up next this Friday. Last week’s Game of the Week results: Scott County 28 Highlands 7 Scott County used their strong ground game and top notch defense to control the Highlands Bluebirds in a weather shortened game. All indications pointing to this game being a running clock game as it was called with about 3 minutes left in the second quarter. Scott County outgained Highlands 252 yards to 22 yards as Scott County seemingly dominated this game of this series once again. Game of the Week - 9-7-18 Montgomery County at George Rogers Clark This week’s Game of the Week is a rivalry game between two schools in the Central Kentucky Area that have no love lost for one another. Both teams are sitting with 2-1 records as they both aim to get their third victory of the season on Friday night. Montgomery County will bring their three offensive threats, Justin Krossy, Josh Wheaton and Pharoah Davis into Winchester to take on Nitavius Thomas and GRC as GRC looks to get some revenge for last year’s 51-21 thumping by Montgomery County. This should be one of the better games in the CKY region this weekend. Wandale Robinson Watch: Week 3: BYE Yearly stats to date: 34 rushes, 323 yards, 4 touchdowns 4 receptions, 196 yards, 3 touchdowns 1 punt return touchdown 8 total touchdowns 16 total tackles(9 solo) 1 interception Player of the Week: Nick Broyles- Franklin County-QB- 12-18-212 yards, 4 touchdowns, 8 carries, 105 yards, 1 touchdown Top Performers: Demarco Fishback- Frederick Douglass-RB- 107 total yards, 5 total touchdowns Beau Allen- Lexington Catholic-QB- 22-33-396 yards, 4 touchdowns, 1 interception. Nitavius Thomas- George Rogers Clark- 19 carries, 134 yards, 3 touchdowns Pharoah Davis- Montgomery County- 6 receptions, 105 yards, 1 touchdown
  3. Bluegrasspreps.com is excited to provide Regional Power Rankings for the entire state by breaking the state into five regions: Eastern Kentucky, Central Kentucky, Northern Kentucky, Western Kentucky and the Louisville Area. The Power Rankings will overview which teams are at the top in their region, regardless of class. The weight of wins and loses are subjective to the quality of the opponents and the team's performance. This means all wins or losses will not be seen as equal. In addition to the Top 10 in each region, the Power Rankings will include: two Big Risers of the week that are moving up but have not yet made it into the Top 10, two Big Droppers of the week that have dropped further away from the Top 10, the Game of the Week that you won't want to miss reading about, and the Player of the Week for each region. 1. 3A Boyle County (3A State Champions, 14-1) Boyle County looks to repeat as 3A State Champions as they return a ton of experience from last season's team. Led by QB Reed Lanter, who threw for almost 2600 yards, 28 touchdowns and 4 interceptions while completing 69% of his passes the Rebels will also return their top two rushers in Tanner Crawford (1928 yards, 25 TDs) and Landen Bartleson (1137 yards, 24 total TDs) along with sensational WR/DB Reese Smith (1037 yards, 15 TDs, 9 INTs). Linemen Aaron Hatter and Wilson Kelly will anchor the defensive line and LB Ezarious Roller aka EZ Roller will be behind them patrolling the field. Long story short, this Boyle County team is absolutely loaded and will a problem for every team on their schedule. They are not only the top team in 3A leading into this season but they are arguably one of the top 5 teams overall in the state. 2. 6A Scott County (6A Semifinals, 11-3) Scott County looks to finish their last year in 6A with a bang as they try to topple those green mountains in Louisville and win the 6A state title. Austin Barnett and his 1310 yards and 22 touchdowns returns to lead a rushing attack that has proven to be an efficient offense under the watchful eye of head coach, Jim McKee. Leading WR Glenn Covington also returns as he had 852 yards and 9 touchdowns last season. It looks like Cade McKee will take over the signal calling for Scott County and if he and Covington can establish some chemistry early that should put Scott County in a great position to succeed. While Scott County will need to find ways to replace some key players from last year’s team one thing we all know is that Scott County doesn’t rebuild, they reload. 3. 6A Frederick Douglass (6A Third Round, 10-3) Frederick Douglass looks to build from their inaugural season and take over as the top program in the CKY area. QB Cameron Jones takes over under center for Frederick Douglass and the Cincinnati commit looks to lead Frederick Douglass to new heights. Cameron Jones transferred to Frederick Douglass from Knott County Central where he threw for 2646 yards, 28 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. He will inherit the skills of versatile athlete Montaveon Bean who mostly played QB last season and will likely be seen all over the field in various spots. The hype train is leaving the tracks at Frederick Douglass this season. If they can live up to the hype they very well may become the best team in the CKY area. 4. 2A Danville (2A State Champions, 15-0) The other half of TitleTown checks in at #4 in the Preseason Power Rankings as the Danville Admirals must find a way to not only replace 2017 Mr. Football, D'Mauriae VanCleave but the other 10 seniors who played a large part in bringing home the title to the Admirals last season. A good place to start is QB Zach Thornton who will bring back his combined 3000+ yards to the Admiral offense. Joining Thornton will be Darrian Bell who shined as a LB last year but will likely have an expanded role on offense this season. Expectations are that Brennen McGuire could have a strong season as well. If the Admirals can find someone to replace Don Harris at RB then they will once again be a favorite to win the 2A state title. 5. 3A Lexington Catholic (3A Third Round, 7-6) The tables turned quickly on Lexington Catholic as their recent dominance of CKY came to an abrupt end with the quick rise of Boyle County. Led by QB Beau Allen the Knights look to return to form as Allen threw for 2873 yards, 33 touchdowns and 9 interceptions last season. While the Knights will need to find a replacement for Dameon Jones, some of Allen's favorite targets in Nathan Schnurr, Trenton Neuer and Luke Powell all return this season as Lexington Catholic looks to have a strong passing attack under the leadership of new head coach, Nigel Smith. 6. 6A Madison Central (6A First Round, 6-5) Big things are expected in Richmond this season as Madison Central returns a lot of experience from their 6-5 team of last season. Health is one of their most important concerns as they will have multiple kids who will be playing both ways this season. Madison Central returns two of their top three RBs in Freddy Chenault and Ethan Hahn. QB Derrick Miller also returns and will have RB/DB Antwaun Warford and TE Blake Muntz back as well as Madison Central looks to keep improving and make a deep run into the postseason. The defense will be led by high energy MLB, Jackson Juett. 7. 5A Anderson County (5A Second Round, 8-4) Anderson County had a strong season last year despite the early exit from the playoffs at the hands of 5A State Finals Runner Up, Madison Southern, in the second round of the playoffs. Zach Labhart returns at RB and Jagger Gillis returns at QB to lead an Anderson County offense that will need to find a way to replace the production that Blake Franklin provided the team last season. Conventional wisdom says that head coach Mark Peach will make sure that this Anderson County team reaches its full potential. 8. 4A Franklin County (4A First Round, 5-6) Franklin County is yet another team that returns a ton of experience and production from last season's team. Led by versatile athlete, Tre Simmons, Franklin County looks to cash in on all of the youth that they had to use last season. Do not be surprised to see Franklin County rise in the rankings throughout the season. The potential is there. 9. 6A Henry Clay (6A Second Round, 6-6) Henry Clay had an up and down year last season but they return a nice amount of talent that looks to improve on last year's finish. Darrin Van Horn, Ramond Jackson and Langston Jackson all return to lead Henry Clay into the season with plans to emerge as one of the better teams in the Lexington area. 10. 3A Western Hills (3A Second Round, 8-4) Wandale Robinson. When you think Western Hills you can't help but think of Wandale Robinson. The Mr. Football front runner looks to finish his senior year strong and have Western Hills make a deep postseason run. Western Hills returns plenty of talent to do just that. While they will need to figure out who will take over at QB the opportunity is there for Western Hills to have a strong season. Best of the Rest: Mercer County Tates Creek George Rogers Clark Lexington Christian Preseason Player of the Year: Wandale Robinson - Western Hills Players to watch: Wandale Robinson - Western Hills Reese Smith - Boyle County Landen Bartleson - Boyle County Reed Lanter - Boyle County Beau Allen - Lexington Catholic Cameron Jones - Frederick Douglass Montaveon Bean - Frederick Douglass Austin Barnett - Scott County Zach Thornton - Danville Darrian Bell - Danville Tre Simmons - Franklin County Kaelin Drakeford - Mercer County Nitavius Thomas - George Rogers Clark Games of the Week (Week 1): George Rogers Clark at Anderson County Tates Creek at Henry Clay Ballard vs Boyle County (at Mercer County) John Hardin at Mercer County Collins at Madison Central
  4. Another week is in the books and there really wasn’t much movement at all in this week’s rankings. For the most part the top 10 teams took care of business this week. Let’s jump in to this week’s rankings. Top Ten: 1. Scott County(6A, 4-0) Scott County faced Ohio power Archbishop Moeller last Friday night and escaped with a 10-7 victory. This victory has solidified Scott County not only as the #1 team in Central Kentucky but also as one of the top 3 teams overall in the state of Kentucky. Running back Austin Barnett carried the ball for 193 yards and 1 touchdown as Scott County now sets their sights on another strong Ohio team, LaSalle out of Cincinnati. They will face them at home on Friday night. 2. Frederick Douglass(6A, 4-0) Frederick Douglass defeated Lafayette 43-0 last weekend and Demarco Fishback put on a show once again. With 222 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns, Fishback is showing that he and Cameron Jones are a deadly duo. Wide receiver Haiden Hunt had a big game also as he had 129 yards receiving and a touchdown. Cameron Jones threw his first three interceptions of the season but he still had 214 yards passing with 2 touchdowns. No longer the new kids on the block, the entire state is now taking notice of the Frederick Douglass Stallions. Next up for Frederick Douglass is their best challenge to date, Madison Central. 3. Boyle County(3A, 4-0) Boyle County destroyed 4A top ten mainstay, Wayne County, 48-7 last Friday night. This was a running clock game and a likely theme for Boyle County as this season continues. Reed Lanter passed for 233 yards and 3 touchdowns. Reese Smith had 83 yards receiving and a touchdown. Landen Bartleson has 56 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns on 7 carries but the big story was Tanner Crawford returning to the field and rushing for 45 yards and a touchdown on 9 carries. With Crawford back I expect this Boyle County offense to go to another level. Next up for Boyle County will be Collins at home. 4. Lexington Catholic(3A, 4-0) Another Friday, another Lexington Catholic beatdown through the air. Beau Allen and his arm went for 362 yards, 5 touchdowns and an interception as Lexington Catholic made short work of Lexington Christian by the score of 54-13. Wide receiver Tommy Knopp had an eye popping 206 yards and 2 touchdowns on 9 receptions. Nathan Schnurr added 96 yards and 2 touchdowns on 3 receptions. The next challenge for Lexington Catholic, the Central Kentucky Game of the Week this week....Highlands Bluebirds at Lexington Catholic. 5. Anderson County(5A, 4-0) Anderson County remains at #5 this week as they defeated Valley 45-7 last week. Charles Collins appears to be the next man up in place of the injured Zach Labhart as Collins ran for 132 yards and 3 touchdowns and also had 2 receptions for 65 yards. On the season Collins has rushed for 389 yards and 7 touchdowns and also has 205 yards receiving and 3 touchdowns. Anderson County looks to remain undefeated this week as they will take on their rival, Franklin County, at home this week. 6. Madison Central(6A, 3-1) Madison Central has their way with crosstown rival, Madison Southern, last week as they won by the score of 47-15. Freddy Chenault ran for 163 yards and 4 touchdowns as Madison Central cruised to victory. A much tougher challenge lies ahead this week as Madison Central will host newly minted 6A power, Frederick Douglass, in a district game that will determine playoff seedings in November. 7. Franklin County(4A, 3-0) Franklin County had their BYE week last week as they prepare to take on Anderson County this week. Anderson County won this game 46-13 last season so we will find out soon enough if Franklin County is able to exact revenge on Anderson County for last year’s loss. 8. Montgomery County(5A, 3-1) Montgomery County escaped George Rogers Clark last week with a 31-28 victory over their heated rival. This game was last week’s Game of the Week and by all accounts it lived up to expectations. No stats are available for Montgomery County so it is hard to see how they won but they did get the job done and that is all that matters. Montgomery County moves up a spot despite that blemish on their record. Montgomery County travels to Fleming County this Friday. 9. Danville(2A, 1-3) I mentioned last week that #7 was probably the lowest we would see Danville ranked the rest of the season in the Central Kentucky Power Rankings. Well, I was wrong. Danville laid an egg against a winnable Pulaski County team and conventional wisdom points to a Corbin/Boyle County hangover. I’ll buy that theory but I can’t hold Danville at #7 because of that theory. Danville will face Waggener this week in what could be another shootout like last year’s 49-46 Danville Admiral victory. It should be a fun one. 10. George Rogers Clark(6A, 2-2) George Rogers Clark dropped a heartbreaker to Montgomery County last week, 31-28. On the heels of Nitavius Thomas and his 213 yards rushing and 4 touchdowns the Cardinals did everything they could to win this game but fell a little short. George Rogers Clark will face Grant County next as they prepare themselves for what is going to be a tough road to travel in 6A District 8. Teams on the Rise: Lincoln County(5A, 3-1) Lincoln County won once again to move to 3-1 on the season. Lincoln County defeated East Jessamine 38-28 last week. They will face Mercer County this week at Mercer County. Last Week’s Game of the Week results: Montgomery County 31 George Rogers Clark 28 In what was a thrilling rivalry game between these two heated rivals, Montgomery County comes away with the victory. By all accounts both teams played pretty good but in the end Montgomery County did what they needed to do to seal the victory. Nitavius Thomas of George Rogers Clark ran wild on Montgomery County for 213 yards and 4 touchdowns but it wasn’t enough to pull out the victory. Game of the Week: Highlands at Lexington Catholic. Highlands has once again made the Game of the Week in Central Kentucky as they travel to Lexington to take on the Knights of Lexington Catholic. This is a huge game for both teams as Highlands is trying to prove their worth and quite frankly, Lexington Catholic is too. A friendly schedule has allowed Lexington Catholic to rack up an insane amount of points and Beau Allen is putting up insane stats as the QB1 for Lexington Catholic. With 1426 yards passing and 19 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, Beau has not only established himself as one of the best QBs in the Central Kentucky area but he is one of the best in the entire state. All eyes in Fort Thomas will be watching this game and all eyes in Central Kentucky should be on this game as well. Learning about both of these teams will take place Friday evening. Wandale Robinson Watch: Last week vs. Bath County 248 yards rushing 2 touchdowns 12 total tackles Yearly stats to date: 571 yards rushing 6 touchdowns 196 yards receiving 3 touchdowns 28 total tackles 1 interception 1 punt return touchdown 10 total touchdowns Player of the Week: Tommy Knopp-Lexington Catholic-Wide Receiver 9 receptions, 206 yards, 2 touchdowns Top Performers: Beau Allen-Lexington Catholic-362 yards passing, 5 touchdowns, 1 interception Demarco Fishback-Frederick Douglass-222 yards rushing, 3 touchdowns Nitavius Thomas-George Rogers Clark-213 yards rushing, 4 touchdowns Austin Barnett-Scott County-193 yards rushing, 1 touchdown Charles Collins-Anderson County-132 yards rushing, 65 yards receiving, 3 touchdowns
  5. It’s playoff time and we have gotten to the win-or-go-home, survive-and-advance part of the season. There are a couple of state title contenders in the Lexington/Central Kentucky Area and there a couple with a chance to make a deep run as well. Things get kicked off this weekend for round one of the playoffs and one team even has a BYE this week. Let’s see what’s cracking....... Top Ten: 1. Frederick Douglass(6A, 10-0) Frederick Douglass finished off an undefeated regular season by defeating Conner 20-0. They will face Pleasure Ridge Park at home in round one. 2. Boyle County(3A, 10-0) Boyle County defeated Mercer County 42-2 to finish off their undefeated regular season. They will face Floyd Central at home to kick off the playoffs this Friday night. 3. Scott County(6A, 7-3) Scott County had a BYE last week and they will begin their playoff adventures on the road at Campbell County this Friday night. 4. Anderson County(5A, 10-0) Anderson County also finished their regular season undefeated as they easily disposed of North Oldham by the score of 45-6. They have a first round BYE this week and they will most likely face Highlands on November 9th at home. 5. Lexington Catholic(3A, 7-3) Lexington Catholic defeated Southwestern 39-17 last week. They will face Pike County Central at home in the first round of the playoffs. 6. Taylor County(4A, 9-1) Taylor County finished the regular season on a 7 game winning streak. They defeated Green County 57-8 last week and will face Western at home this Friday night to start the playoffs. 7. Montgomery County(5A, 8-2) Montgomery County finished the regular season with a 54-26 victory over Lincoln County. They will face Dixie Heights at home in the first round of the playoffs. 8. Franklin County(4A, 8-2) Franklin County finished the season on a 6 game winning streak. They defeated Tates Creek 35-19 last Friday night and they will face Russell County at home to begin the playoffs. 9. Madison Central(6A, 7-3) Madison Central ended the season with a puzzling 41-21 loss to Bryan Station. They will get a chance to quickly bounce back as they will face Seneca at home this Friday night to start the playoffs. 10. George Rogers Clark(6A, 7-3) George Rogers Clark sneaks back into the Top Ten after a 40-0 victory over Bourbon County. They will face Cooper this Friday night at home to start the playoffs. Be On The Lookout For: Frankfort(1A, 7-3) Frankfort has a 5 game winning streak heading into the playoffs. They have a good chance to make it to the third round. They have a first round BYE this week. Lexington Christian(2A, 7-3) Lexington Christian is looking to avenge a previous loss to Somerset. Their bracket sets up for it to possibly happen. They face Prestonburg at home this Friday to start the playoffs. Western Hills(3A, 7-3) Western Hills has a chance to make a run in the playoffs but it won’t be easy. Their first step begins Friday on the road at Lawrence County. Last Week’s Game of the Week: Lexington Catholic 39 Southwestern 17 Beau Allen threw for 284 yards and 3 touchdowns as Lexington Catholic had zero issues with putting Southwestern away last Friday night. There was some speculation as to whether or not Southwestern rested some players but looking at the game stats it appears as though not many regulars sat last Friday night. Southwestern was able to run for over 200 yards against Lexington Catholic but it is clear they didn’t have any answers for the passing attack of Lexington Catholic as this Game of the Week did not live up to the hype. Game of the Week: Breckinridge County at Mercer County. This game interests me as one of the first round games that might be close. Both of these teams have way more success running the ball than passing the ball so I expect this game to be a quickly played game. Mercer County has a better run defense than Breckinridge County and with this being a home game for Mercer County things should play into their hands. We all know things never work out that way though. Both teams are 4-6 entering this game and I am intrigued to see which one will leave 5-6. Player of the Week: Reed Lanter-Boyle County-17-18 passing, 304 yards, 4 Top Performers: Xavier Brown-Lexington Christian-120 yards rushing, 3 TDs Charles Collins-Anderson County-205 yards rushing, 3 TDs Azariah Israel-George Rogers Clark-153 yards rushing, 3 TDs Dearious Smith-Lexington Christian-141 yards receiving, 1 TD Reese Smith-Boyle County-114 yards receiving, 2 TDs Player of the Year: Wandale Robinson-Western Hills I’m naming this one early because Wandale is clearly the only choice. It will be a travesty of epic proportions if he doesn’t win Mr. Football. Yearly stats: 8-10 passing, 173 yards, 2 TDs 1844 yards rushing, 28 TDs 493 yards receiving, 9 TDs 3-2 point conversions 105 tackles(11 TFL) 1 sack 6 forced fumbles 1 fumble recovery 3 interceptions 54 yard fumble recovery TD 134 interception return yards, 1 interception return TD 41 total TDs Side note: Congratulations to Berea for their win last week. They defeated Jellico(TN) 18-0 for their first victory in 43 games. Their last previous win came against Lynn Camp on October 10, 2014. (credit to Dan Rieffer)
  6. As we wind down to the end of the season the chance for movement continues to get more slim each week. George Rogers Clark has exited the top ten and Franklin County has joined the ranks of the top ten this week. Other than that the teams remain the same with a little bit of adjusting due to Henry Clay losing their starting quarterback and clearly being a whole new team without him. As we enter the last week of the regular season there aren’t many intriguing matchups and most teams are focusing on team health instead of team success in this final week of the regular. Let’s jump right in. Top Ten: 1. Frederick Douglass(6A, 9-0)Frederick Douglas defeated Henry Clay 36-3 to claim the top spot in their district. They will finish the regular season on the road at Conner this Friday night. 2. Boyle County(3A, 9-0) Boyle County defeated Western Hills 54-35 in a closer-than-the-score-indicates thriller. Boyle County will finish the regular season against Mercer County at home this Thursday night. 3. Scott County(6A, 7-3) Scott County defeated Pleasure Ridge Park 44-18. They have completed their regular season schedule and will face Campbell County on the road in the first round of the playoffs on November 2. 4. Anderson County(5A, 9-0) Anderson County defeated Madison Southern 40-7. They will finish their regular season on the road at North Oldham this Friday night. 5. Lexington Catholic(3A, 6-3) Lexington Catholic defeated Garrard County 39-22. Lexington Catholic will finish their regular season at home against Southwestern this Friday night. 6. Taylor County(4A, 8-1) Taylor County defeated Marion County 62-6. Taylor County will finish their regular season at home against Green County. 7. Henry Clay(6A, 5-4) Henry Clay lost to Frederick Douglass 36-3. Henry Clay will finish their regular season on the road at Cooper this Friday night. 8. Madison Central(6A, 7-2) Madison Central defeated George Rogers Clark 31-7. Madison Central will finish their regular season on the road at Bryan Station this Friday night. 9. Montgomery County(5A, 7-2) Montgomery County defeated Woodford County 48-20. Montgomery County will finish up their regular season at home against Lincoln County. 10. Franklin County(4A, 7-2) Franklin County defeated North Oldham 47-14. Franklin County will finish up their regular season on the road at Tates Creek. Be On The Lookout For: George Rogers Clark lost to Madison Central 31-7 last week. They will finish the regular season against at home against Bourbon County. Lexington Christian defeated Danville 14-13 last week. They finish the regular season on the road at Estill County. Lincoln County defeated South Laurel 35-23 last week. They finish the regular season on the road at Montgomery County. Game of the Week: Southwestern at Lexington Catholic High powered offense meets stout defense in this matchup as Lexington Catholic hosts Southwestern this Friday night in this week’s Game of the Week. Southwestern has been a strong running team this year and we all know that Lexington Catholic has faced difficulties stopping the run with success. Lexington Catholic will use their high powered passing attack to test a Southwestern defense that is giving up an average of about 11 points per game to opposing teams this year. With Southwestern losing their first game of the season last week, I have to imagine that they will be playing this game to win as they look to regain some mojo heading into the playoffs. This is a great matchup for both teams as they look to work out some things heading into November. Last Week’s Game of the Week: George Rogers Clark at Madison Central Madison Central dominated this game as they won 31-7 and secured the top seed in the district. For maybe the first time all season Madison Central finished the game with more passing yards than rushing yards and used one of their more balanced attacks to win this game. George Rogers Clark couldn’t get anything going and Nitavius Thomas was neutralized from the start of the game. I thought this game would be a much closer, competitive game. I was wrong about that. Player of the Week: Reese Smith-Boyle County- 105 yards receiving, 3 TDs, 8 tackles, 1 interception, 100 yard interception return TD Top Performers: Chase Blanton-Harrison County- 201 yards rushing, 3 TDs, 4 tackles(3 TFL) Jalen Burbage-Bryan Station- 114 yards rushing, 3 TDs DaJuan Davis-Frankfort- 259 yards rushing, 3 TDs, 18 yards receiving, 19 tackles Darius Napier-Lincoln County- 203 yards rushing, 2TDs, 32 yards receiving, 4 tackles Will Vernon-Lexington Christian- 134 yards receiving, 1 TD Wandale Robinson Watch: His latest stats haven’t been updated to the KHSAA scoreboard so for this week we only have his yearly stats. I do know that he finished strong against Boyle County but I don’t have his official stats for last week’s game. Yearly stats: 8-10 passing, 173 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT 1560 yards rushing, 25 TDs 367 yards receiving, 7 TDs 35 total TDs 3-2 point conversations 85 tackles(10 TFL) 1 sack 5 forced fumbles 3 interceptions, 134 interception return yards, 1 interceptions return TD
  7. Well, well, well. It finally happened. And it happened right here in the Central Kentucky Area. Henry Clay defeated Scott County. No, Henry Clay smacked Scott County 51-27 last weekend and sent Kentucky High School football fans in a state of shock as a result. That is The Story of the season so far as Scott County was considered to be at least a top 3-5 team overall in the state and Henry Clay hasn’t even been considered one of the top 5 teams in the Central Kentucky Area. That changes now. It’s clear Scott County isn’t who we thought they were and it is also clear that Henry Clay’s tough schedule likely prepared them for what lies ahead in their matchup against Scott County. Make no bones about it, this win is HUGE for Henry Clay not only for their confidence but this was a district win and this win for Henry Clay could be the reason that Scott County could be traveling in the first round of the playoffs. Henry Clay was ranked 7th last week in our abbreviated Central Kentucky Power Rankings. Where will the Blue Devils land this week after their phenomenal win over Scott County? Let’s take a look and see........ Top Ten: 1. Frederick Douglass(6A, 7-0) We have a new number one team in the building and they are the Frederick Douglass Broncos. Frederick Douglass has been cruising along this season and critics will say it is because of their easy schedule. While I do think that Henry Clay has played a tougher schedule it should be noted that Frederick Douglass has played multiple teams considered to be in the top ten in their respective classifications and they have defeated teams in the 6A classification in similar fashion as the other teams they have faced. They have a dynamic offense that has proven that they can score in many ways as Demarco Fishback can run the rock or catch the rock and Demarco Fishback will score the rock. In my opinion, Demarco is one of the best players in the state that no one talks about. His quarterback, Cameron Jones, is also having an outstanding season and having the stable of wide receivers at his ready has proven to be a key to the team’s success. Also of note is that their defense has been strong all season long as they have given up a total of 58 points through 7 games. Frederick Douglass sits at 7-0 right now and as mentioned their schedule hasn’t been the toughest so it has been hard to gauge just how good they are. They are considered one of the top teams not only in 6A but in the entire state. Their biggest test of the season will come this Friday evening as they will face a Scott County team that is looking to restore their reputation. This game is easily the choice for Game of the Week in the Central Kentucky Area this week. 2. Boyle County(3A, 6-0) Boyle County had a BYE this past week and with Scott County losing the Rebels are now the #2 team in the Power Rankings. I know this irks some Rebel fans but at the end of the day the team’s focus is on finishing #1 in 3A in December and not in my Power Rankings in early October. There is still a chance that the Rebels could be #1 next week if Scott County can return to glory and defeat Frederick Douglass. For now the Rebels will be #2 as they look to get some of their injured bodies back on the field in the next week or two. The one thing the injuries have allowed to happen is for depth to be developed. Led by quarterback, Reed Lanter and his stable of running backs, Landen Bartleson, Tanner Crawford and Andrew Sacco the Rebels have been strong, versatile and diverse in the ways they can run the rock. Add in wide receiver, Reese Smith along with Reiley Colwick, Drew Baker and the emergence of Luke Sheperson the Rebels put forth a balanced offense capable of scoring on pretty much any defense thrown at them. This team is loaded with talent, extremely well coached and has the experience to successfully defend their state championship this year. Stay tuned. They aren’t close to being as good as they can and will be. Boyle County will face Garrard County this week. 3. Henry Clay(6A, 3-3) New to the top 5 this week is the Henry Clay Blue Devils. As we all know Henry Clay put a whipping on Scott County last week and as a result they are now the #3 ranked team in the Power Rankings. There were people early in the season who felt Henry Clay should be ranked in the Power Rankings and I didn’t disagree I just needed a reason to validate a ranking. Last Friday they gave me that validation as they jumped from #7 to #3 in the rankings. You want to see teams getting better at this point in the year and that is exactly what Henry Clay is doing right now. Led by quarterback DJ VanHorn and do-it-all superstar Ramond Jackson, Henry Clay is showing the moxie to be able to do the unthinkable and win their district. No one thought they would beat Scott County so it is possible that they can defeat Frederick Douglass and win their district. Especially if they keep improving weekly. They definitely have the confidence to win and now it is up to them to put together some more wins and finish strong. I can’t wait to see what they do next. The ball is in their court. Their next game is Thursday against Dunbar. 4. Scott County(6A, 5-2) Scott County is having a good season. That must be made clear right now. They are sitting at 5-2 and have a strong win over GCL traditional power Moeller out of Ohio and they manhandled a much improved Highlands team as well. No one expected them to lose to Henry Clay but the season is far from over as there is plenty of time for them to regroup and right the ship. They have displayed an otherworldly running game with a stable of strong running backs led by leading rusher, Austin Barnett. Bronson Brown and Payton Brown have both proven to be capable running backs for Scott County and before last Friday night their defense was considered at the very least an above average defense so Scott County has the tools to overcome this current spell they are under. They will get a chance immediately to prove just how good they really are as they will face Frederick Douglass this Friday night. Two weeks ago fans expected this to be a decisive win for Scott County. Now, no one really knows but I have a strong feeling that this game will be a great game as both teams have something to prove as well as a lot at stake. 5. Anderson County(5A, 6-0) Anderson County has proven to be a resilient team as well as a strong team. After losing arguably their best player, Zach Labhart, early in the season the next man up, Charles Collins, has stepped into that role and flourished. Collins is the team’s leading rusher AND the team’s leading receiver and he has shouldered the load for Anderson County as they have passed every test they have taken so far. Now, things may get a little tougher going forward as they begin their district play but looking at their schedule they are good enough to be undefeated heading into the playoffs. You don’t hear many people across the state talking about Anderson County but with the right draw and weekly improvement they will have a chance to play deep into November. Next up for Anderson County will be Woodford County on Friday evening 6. Lexington Catholic(3A, 4-2) The Knights of Lexington Catholic are currently on a two game losing streak but they lost to two formidable opponents in Highlands and DeSales so it is nothing to be ashamed of. Led by quarterback Beau Allen(who recently picked up an offer from Washington State) who is currently the statewide passing leader, Lexington Catholic has been slinging the ball all over the place in a high powered offense catered to Allen’s talents. With wide receivers like Nathan Schnurr, Tommy Knopp, Jackson Corbett and Luke Powell it is easy to see how dominant Lexington Catholic has been in the air. As district play begins the big questions will be, can they stop Wandale Robinson and can they defeat Boyle County? Those questions will have to be answered and we will find out those answers soon as they face Western Hills this Friday night. 7. Taylor County(4A, 5-1) Taylor County is the team that I am unsure of where they stand geographically in the state of Kentucky concerning our Power Rankings but their district has East and West Jessamine, Mercer County and Marion County and those are all Central Kentucky teams so Taylor County is a Central Kentucky Team as well. They are having a strong season and make their debut in the Power Rankings this week as they continue to run roughshod over their opponents every week despite their one loss of the season to rival, Campbellsville. They are in the driver’s seat to finish first in their district as they bring a somewhat balanced offense to the table led by quarterback, Grant McQueary and running back, Wes Oliver. Keep an eye on Taylor County as they prepare themselves to make a deep run in the 4A playoffs this season. Next up for Taylor County is East Jessamine on Friday evening. 8. Montgomery County(5A, 5-1) Montgomery County dropped two spots through no fault of their own. They won last week but so did Henry Clay and Taylor County has proven to be better than them so far this season. Montgomery County’s loss to East Jessamine is still puzzling to me but that could be an aberration. While Montgomery County is more apt to run than throw the ball they do have talent at the quarterback position in Trey Ishmael, at the running back position with Justin Korossy and at wide receiver in Pharoah Davis. They will face Madison Southern this Friday night in a game they should win so I am personally looking ahead to their matchup against Anderson County in October 12. We should see the true Montgomery County team on that date. 9. Lincoln County(5A, 5-1) Lincoln County has been a pleasant surprise this season. They are sitting at 5-1 and have won 5 games in a row after losing 41-0 to Somerset in the first game of the season. The worry that Lincoln County fans had after the first game of the season has turned to elation and confidence that things are different this season in Stanford. Darius Napier has been a strong part of Lincoln County’s success at running back as well as on defense as the second leading tackler on the team. Having a healthy Bryson Yaden at quarterback has also been a huge plus for Lincoln County as they strive to restore the pride in their football program. Up next for Lincoln County is show-and-prove matchup against Pulaski County this Friday night. 10. Madison Central(6A, 4-2) Madison Central is lower where I expected them to be at this point but that has more to do with the teams ahead of them than Madison Central. They have won the games they should win and they have lost the games I have expected them to lose. Running back Freddy Chenault has been the spark plug on offense for Madison Central this season as he leads the team in rushing. Madison Central is in a precarious situation as they are in a very winnable district and should emerge as the #1 team in that district. The precarious part comes in that they are likely not better than the top three teams from District 7(they have a 43-0 loss to Frederick Douglass) so they will need to keep improving every week if they have hopes of advancing deep in the playoffs. Next up for Madison Central will be Tates Creek on Thursday night. Be On The Lookout For: Mercer County(4A, 3-4) Mercer County has won 3 of their last 4 games and that loss was a close game against #9 Lincoln County. With a win this Friday against East Jessamine, Mercer County will set themselves up to finish no worse than second place in their district. George Rogers Clark(6A, 4-2) Due to the success of other teams, George Rogers Clark has dropped out of the top ten. They are now in the meaty part of their schedule and while they should defeat Lafayette and Tates Creek they likely won’t be easy wins and Madison Central is waiting in the wings behind these two games. Lexington Christian(2A, 5-2) Lexington Christian started slowly but they have won 5 of their last 6 games. They will face a strong Somerset team this Friday and if they can pull off that victory they should finish in first place in their district. Player(s) of the Week: Without question the Players of the Week are the two catalysts of the Henry Clay victory over Scott County: DJ VanHorn and Ramond Jackson. DJ Van Horn three for 225 yards and 2 TDs and he also ran for 160 yards and 2 TDs. Ramond Jackson has 159 yards receiving and a touchdown, a kickoff return touchdown, 2 interceptions and 14 total tackles. Game of the Week: Scott County at Frederick Douglass This Friday night. Be there or be square. This game has all of the makings for an outstanding game. This is probably the biggest game of in the short history of the Frederick Douglass football program and this game is the moment for Frederick Douglass to announce to the rest of the state that they have arrived. If Frederick Douglass wins this game then they are easily one of the top 5 teams in the state. Scott County is looking to regain their swagger back after last week’s loss to Henry Clay and will gain it back quickly if they can pull off the victory on the road. Can Scott County contain Cameron Jones and Demarco Fishback? Can the underrated Frederick Douglass defense stop the vaunted Scott County rushing offense? We shall find out soon enough!!!! Last Week’s Game of the Week: Mercer County 29 East Jessamine 22 Mercer County secured another victory last week in their 29-22 victory over East Jessamine. The rushing of Malachi Yulee(102 yards, 2 TDs), Bryson Yeast(54 yards 1 TD) and Brayden Dunn(45 yards, 1 TD) brought the game home for the Titans. Wandale Robinson Watch Last week vs Washington County: 1-1, 15 yards passing 181 yards rushing, 4 TDs 13 yards receiving, 1 TD 12 total tackles Yearly stats: 3-4, 74 yards passing, 1 TD 1117 yards rushing, 17 TDs 330 yards receiving, 7 TDs 2 punt return TDs 1-2 point conversion 55 total tackles( 3 tackles for loss) 2 interceptions Top Performers: Nitavius Thomas-George Rogers Clark-160 yards rushing, 2 TDs Jamaun Clark-Paris-170 yards rushing, 1 TD Luke Duby-Tates Creek-82 yards rushing, 3 TDs Tre Goodin-Taylor County-108 yards rushing 1 TD, 48 yards receiving 1 TD Demarco Fishback-Frederick Douglass-161 yards rushing, 1 TD, 48 yards receiving
  8. Round 2 of the playoffs was an abysmal round for the Lexington/Central Kentucky Area as it was like Thanos came through and snapped his fingers and half of the teams disappeared. Mathematically it is actually more than half as 18 teams were alive last week and now there are only 7 teams remaining from the area still alive in the playoffs. How many will make it past this week? Let’s take a look and see who is left.......... The Sensational Seven: 1. Boyle County(3A) Boyle County remains alive and is headed to Belfry this weekend as they had little trouble with Lawrence County in their 42-8 victory last Friday. The Belfry game looks to be more challenging than the Lawrence County game and add in the fact that it is a road game and things will get interesting for the Rebels. Belfry is traditionally strong at home and that is taking nothing away from them being strong every year. They will bring a strong running game to the table but one area of concern for the Pirates has to be their defense. They gave up 51 points to Lexington Catholic last week and anyone who has been following this season closely will tell you that Boyle County definitely has a much better offense than Lexington Catholic. Boyle County also has a much better defense than Lexington Catholic so do not expect Belfry to put up 55 points for the second week in a row. If Belfry can’t stop Lexington Catholic from putting up 51 points I am intrigued to see their gameplan to stop Boyle County’s offense. If Boyle County can score 30 points then I guarantee their opponent won’t win the game. Trying to outscore Boyle County is a fatal mistake. I imagine that Coach Haywood is well aware of this and the gameplan to stop the Rebels will be unveiled Friday night at 7:00pm at Belfry. We’ll see if it works. 2. Scott County(6A) Scott County aka The School Up North emerged from their rematch with Frederick Douglass with a 28-27 victory. Unlike the first matchup Scott County was in this game from the start and led by the score of 20-7 at the half. Frederick Douglass came back and took a 21-20 lead at one point and Scott County answered with a score and successful 2 point conversion to make it 28-21. Frederick Douglass then went on to score but their 2 point conversion attempt failed and after one more possession Frederick Douglass was unable to convert a first down and that gave us the final score of 28-27 Scott County wins. Because Scott County was the 3 seed in their district they will have to travel once again. This time they head up north to Simon Kenton. They have some common opponents this season in Highlands, Henry Clay, Bryan Station and Campbell County. They share victories over all of those opponents except two, Highlands and Henry Clay. Scott County defeated Highlands 28-7 in a game that lasted one half and Simon Kenton lost to Highlands 38-9. Scott County was defeated by Henry Clay and Simon Kenton defeated Henry Clay but it is of note that Henry Clay has lost their starting QB for the season when they played Henry Clay so it was a markedly different team that defeated Scott County. None of these results will make much of a difference come Friday night as the team who executes the best will be moving on to Thanksgiving weekend. 3. Taylor County Taylor County used their strong running game and stout defense to deliver a 23-0 shutout to John Hardin last Friday night. Next up for Taylor County will be Moore and this game will be at Taylor County. Moore rolls into this game with the same 11-1 record that Taylor County has earned this season. Moore’s only loss came from Johnson Central and Taylor County’s only loss came from Campbellsville. The common opponents that they share lost to both teams in similar fashion so there is no point in trying to figure out the outcome looking at those scores. Moore looks to have played the tougher schedule but on Friday night none of that will matter as both of these teams look to continue their impressive seasons for at least one more week. 4. Franklin County Franklin County is alive and well in the playoffs after a 27-21 victory over Wayne County last Friday at Franklin County. They will travel down to Knox Central this weekend for a rematch of a previous game this season in which Franklin County won 42-20. The difference this time is that the game will be at Knox Central and it will be Franklin County doing the traveling this time. Nick Broyles was unstoppable last time these teams met and if Knox Central is unable to contain him this time then their season may come to an end. 5. Madison Central Madison Central swept their season matchups with Tates Creek as they defeated the Commodores 13-10. Madison Central will now host Conner this weekend and both teams boast a 9-3 record entering this game. Both teams will run the ball more than they will throw it so I imagine this could be a low scoring ball game with the team showing a better defense pulling out the victory. Either way, two teams not mentioned much amongst the greats of 6A will be playing for the right to be one of the final four teams left in the 6A playoffs. 6. Lexington Christian Lexington Christian traveled to Shelby Valley last week and came home with a 43-0 victory. Up next for them is a rematch against Somerset, a game they lost 35-0. That game was scoreless at the half but Somerset clearly took things to the next level in the second half of that game. How that affects Lexington Christian mentally remains to be seen. They will need to find a way to score and if they hope to win they will need to keep that Somerset offense off of the field as much as possible. It will likely be an uphill battle for sure but I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see this be a much better game than the previous one. 7. Frankfort Frankfort defeated Ludlow 60-42 last week and their prize for that victory is a matchup with two-time defending 1A state champion, Beechwood. Frankfort has had a good season and a victory against Beechwood would be the biggest upset of the week. Not saying it won’t happen but this is the textbook definition of an uphill battle. Final Overall Top Ten: 1. Boyle County 2. Scott County 3. Frederick Douglass 4. Anderson County 5. Lexington Catholic 6. Taylor County 7. Franklin County 8. Montgomery County 9. Madison Central 10. Lexington Christian Player of the Year Wandale Robinson-Western Hills
  9. Business is picking up as we enter the middle of the regular season. A new team has joined this week's rankings and a couple of familiar faces in the top 5 picked up their first loss of the season. Will the rankings be shook up this week or will not much change at all? Shall we......... Top Ten: 1. Scott County(6A, 4-1)- Scott County took one on the chin this past weekend in a major way when they hosted LaSalle(Cincinnati, OH). Scott County lost 37-7 as they were outmatched in every facet. Scott County will remain #1 for now as their resume still suggests that they are the best team in the Central Kentucky area. Next up for Scott County is a district matchup on the road against Bryan Station Friday night. 2. Frederick Douglass(6A, 5-0)- Frederick Douglass made quick work of Madison Central last week as they won by the score of 42-7. Cameron Jones had another strong game as he had 421 yards passing and 3 touchdowns. Demarco Fishback added 2 rushing touchdowns to his season total and also had 94 yards rushing. Montaveon Bean had 124 yards receiving and 2 touchdowns and Dekel Crowdus added 103 yards receiving and a touchdown as well. Next up is a district matchup at home against Dunbar this Friday night. 3. Boyle County(3A, 5-0)- Boyle County had another easy matchup against as they quickly dismissed Collins by the score of 40-13. Boyle County used a balanced attack as they had 3 touchdowns in the air and 3 touchdowns on the ground. The versatility on offense as well as a stable of contributors getting better every week is going to continue to make things difficult for all future Boyle County opponents. The Rebels will be without he services of Reese Smith for an unknown time but I anticipate the The Rebels will roll along. The Rebels will travel to North Hardin this Friday evening as they will face another challenge from a 6A school. 4. Lexington Catholic(3A, 4-1)- Lexington Catholic hosted traditional power Highlands last Friday night and Highlands proved to be too much for Lexington Catholic to handle as they fell 44-27. Lexington Catholic led 20-17 at the half but Highlands effectively shut them down in the second half. Lexington Catholic's season doesn't get any easier as they will travel to Louisville to face the 6A slayer, 2A power, DeSales this Friday night. 5. Anderson County(5A, 5-0)- Anderson County is still going strong after dismantling Franklin County by the score of 42-21. Charles Collins continues to dominate as he ran for 207 yards and 4 touchdowns. Brennon Maxberry pitched in with 118 yards and a touchdown and quarterback Jagger Gillis chipped in with 72 yards rushing and a touchdown. Anderson County is on their BYE this week and will next play on September 28th at home against Grant County. 6. Montgomery County(5A, 4-1)- Montgomery County moves to 4-1 on the year after cruising to victory over Fleming County. Montgomery County continues to gather momentum as they work to make a deep run in the playoffs. Next up for Montgomery County is their BYE week and then on September 28th they will face South Laurel at home. 7. Danville(2A, 2-3)- Danville continues to live off of the respect that their tradition allows them to have as they have a losing record but remain in the top ten. They picked up their second victory this past Friday with a 30-21 win over Waggener. The victory may have come at a cost as they have lost starting RB, Kishown Bartleson, for an extended amount of time due to injury. This is yet another obstacle for the Admirals to overcome as they inch closer to district play. Any sustained success will likely depend on the arms, legs and feet of QB Zach Thornton and the hands of WR Brennan McGuire. Next up for Danville is a road matchup against Garrard County this Friday night. 8. George Rogers Clark(6A, 3-2)- George Rogers Clark rebounded from their loss to Montgomery County to defeat Grant County by the score of 55-18. Nitavius Thomas was shining once again as he had 170 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns. Azariah Israel added 101 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns of his own as George Rogers Clark picked up their third victory of the season. Next up for George Rogers Clark is their BYE week and then they will travel to Boone County on September 28th for their next game. 9. Lincoln County(5A, 4-1)- Lincoln County joins the ranks of the top ten this week after recording a 28-14 victory against Mercer County this past weekend. Darius Napier did a little bit of everything to help secure the victory as he had 81 yards rushing, 3 rushing touchdowns, 21 yards receiving, 7 total tackles, 1 forced fumble and a fumble recovery that he returned for 48 yards. Lincoln County has now won four straight games and they will look to make it five in a row after they complete their BYE week this week and return to action on September 28th against Larue County on the road. 10. Madison Central(6A, 3-2)- Madison Central was obliterated by Frederick Douglass last Friday night by the score of 42-7. Facing a superior opponent they had a tough time getting anything going against the Frederick Douglass defense. Whether they learned from the game remains to be seen but at the least it was a humbling moment for a team looking to make a statement in the Central Kentucky area this season. Madison Central will travel to Bourbon County this Friday night as they look to regain some momentum heading into district play. Teams on the Rise: West Jessamine(4A, 3-2)- West Jessamine is still on the Watchlist even though they don't have what I would call a signature win. Time will tell if they deserve to be ranked in the top ten. They put away Nelson County last week and they will begin district play this weekend in a tough matchup against Taylor County. Taylor County(4A, 3-1)- I'm honestly not sure if Taylor County is considered a Central Kentucky team but they are in the same district as Mercer County and East and West Jessamine so I'll keep them all together. Taylor County likely has the most impressive wins amongst the Teams on the Rise so I definitely have an eye on them going forward. They face district foe and fellow Team on the Rise, West Jessamine, this Friday night. Lexington Christian(2A, 3-2)- Don't look now but Lexington Christian is coming. They had a good win against an undefeated Walton-Verona team last weekend and they look to carry on that success this weekend against Kentucky Country Day. The Prepspin announcers said during the Lexington Catholic/Highlands broadcast that Lexington Christian is looking forward to playing Danville. IMO they better be focused on Somerset before Danville. Six Degrees of Separation: Just a quick observation of the season so far. East Jessamine has one win this season and it is against #6 Montgomery County. East Jessamine lost 34-31 against Garrard County. Garrard County lost 49-0 against Mercer County and 35-20 against #9 Lincoln County. #9 Lincoln County defeated Mercer County 28-14 and they also defeated East Jessamine 38-28. Yes, the same East Jessamine that only has one win this season against #6 Montgomery County. Last Week’s Game of the Week: Highlands 44 Lexington Catholic 27 Lexington Catholic seemingly had control of this game early as they jumped out to an early lead and led 20-17 at the half. Things changed once the second half began as the Highlands defense took over the game and made the Lexington Catholic offense a non factor. Using a nonstop pass rush the Bluebirds never allowed Beau Allen to get comfortable in the pocket and it had an effect on his efficiency. A fumble return for a touchdown all but sealed the deal for Highlands in the fourth quarter. Grady Cramer looked to be the more steady hand at the QB position as he completed 18-26 passes for 271 yards and a touchdown. This was a great game to watch via an outstanding picture from the men at Prepspin as the Game of the Week lived up to its billing this past week. Game of the Week: Lexington Catholic at DeSales: Lexington Catholic once again is the beneficiary of being the Game of the Week. This week they will face the giant killer, 2A power, DeSales, on the road in Louisville. DeSales has taken down St. Xavier and Butler this year and while Lexington Catholic isn’t a 6A school this game will provide a decent measuring stick for Lexington Catholic and for DeSales. DeSales is known for having a stingy defense and if they plan to win the title in 2A this is the kind of game they need to make them better. The same is true for Lexington Catholic. If they plan to defeat Boyle County this year then this game will help them get to where they need to be to make defeating Boyle County a reality. This should be a good game and one to keep an eye on this Friday night. Wandale Robinson Watch: Last week vs. Frankfort: 242 yards rushing, 3 touchdowns 27 yards receiving, 1 touchdown 1 punt return touchdown 1 two point conversion 5 total tackles(1 tackle for loss) 1-1 passing, 6 yards Yearly stats to date: 6 yards passing 813 yards rushing, 9 touchdowns 22 yards receiving, 4 touchdowns 2 punt return touchdowns 15 total touchdowns 33 total tackles(1 tackle for loss) 1 interception Player of the Week: Charles Collins-Anderson County- 16 carries, 207 yards, 4 touchdowns Top Performers: Cameron Jones-Frederick Douglass- 21-27, 421 yards, 3 touchdowns Jayden Barnhardt-Lexington Christian- 18-24, 286 yards, 4 touchdowns Taveon Dean-East Jessamine- 14 carries, 229 yards, 1 touchdown Nick Broyles-Franklin County- 30-49, 365 yards, 2 touchdowns, 1 interception, 16 carries, 136 yards rushing
