  1. 07/10/14 ? Reminder about Changes in Football Preseason Practice Rules | Kentucky High School Athletic Association

Preseason and during season practice in football shall be as follows:

The first legal organized practice wearing a helmet only shall be no earlier than July 22. Voluntary activity may be conducted between July 10 and July 21, and may include no football gear other than the helmet.

The first three (3) days of organized practice shall be in helmets only and the next three (3) days shall be in helmets and shoulder pads for acclimatization and acclimation.

For the three practice days in shoulder pads and helmets, there can be no contact with other players, only with sleds and dummies.

    Provided such activity is conducted and supervised by coaches meeting all qualifications of Bylaw 25, these practice sessions shall be covered by KHSAA Catastrophic insurance;

The remainder of the gear specified in NFHS Rule 1-5 can be issued and practice in pads can begin no earlier than August 1 or the week day following the completion of the required three (3) days of practice in helmets and shoulder pads if such date is after August 1. This is for all schools regardless of when school begins.

Any practice period on or after August 1 where any equipment other than the helmet and shoulder pads are worn shall be referred to as contact practice, and shall adhere to the following restrictions:

    After contact practice has begun (any practice where more than a helmet and shoulder pads are worn), a non-contact simulation (7 on 7) may not be held;

After contact practice has begun and prior to the first day of classes for the students, a school shall not conduct multiple on-field practice sessions in pads (e.g., two-a-days or three-a-days) on consecutive days (e.g., two-one-two-one format)

After each contact practice, there shall be a three-hour break. During this break, there can be no gear worn, and no activity that in any way simulates football or football drills. This restriction is in place regardless of where the practice occurs including camps, home practices, or other workout areas. This period is solely for rest/recovery

The total practice time on any day where two contact practices are conducted shall not exceed five (5) hours, with no single contact practice exceeding three (3) hours. The total practice time on any day where only one contact practice is conducted shall not exceed three (3) hours. Meetings, film study, water breaks, rest breaks and injury treatment shall not count against the five hour limits. Weight training, voluntary conditioning and teaching period/walk through simulations without equipment shall not count against the five hour limit provided the three-hour break required for cool down is conducted prior to the additional activity following the contact practice

After the opening day of the school year, a school shall not conduct multiple on-field practice sessions in pads (e.g., two-a-days or three-a-days) regardless of the school schedule.

All schools shall upon request, submit any required documentation to verify the proper execution of the practice regulations, including scrimmage, contact, and Heat/Humidity Measurement and Compliance Programs.

At this point in time, there are not specific limitations regarding minutes or hours of contact practice per week, but those types of restrictions remain under rules. Coaches are reminded that it is critical to adhere to all guidelines for practice to help minimize risk for the student athletes.

Further information regarding revised regulations for offseason work following the 2014 season is being finalized and will be distributed upon completion. Best of luck to all teams in preparation for the 2014 season.

  2. Will GRC go to an offsite football camp this year like they did in 2012 at EKU?

Will GRC play in a scrimmage in 2014? Who is the opponent and what will be the time and location of the game?

Who are the assistant coaches who are in charge of our boys? What are their backgrounds and coaching experience levels?

Answering these questions is one way to bring the community into the football program.

Another question might be who are the expected starters on offense and defense?

  3. Still waiting.

Riddle is aware of the team’s tradition that links back to the state championship campaign in 1991 and wants the community to become involved with the program and desires to produce a product that unites the team with the community.

You always want to build on tradition and include people in the community,” he said. “This is a situation where obviously it’s not about me, but it’s about the kids, but also about the community, bringing everybody in together (where) everybody can rally behind. That’s what football does, it brings people together.

  4. What about Knowles from GRC?

    He was listed.

    Toughest Exclusions:

    Ross Neltner, Highlands (2001):

Not a flashy name, but he had a solid career between LSU and Vanderbilt and was a Kentucky Mr. Basketball. He fills a position of need at the 4, especially when we’re talking about the defensive side of the ball. His bulk will give him the edge here over a more versatile and offensively capable junior Justin Doellman.

    Larry O'Bannon, Male (2001):

Starter on a Final Four team at Louisville, but the team is loaded at the wings with Barbour, Miller, Smith, Mackey, and Hopson. Of those, only Mackey and Barbour didn’t play at least some in the NBA, however they were rated higher as recruits, so I’ll give them the nod.

Maurice Hampton, Russellville (2001) – Jr.:

Not tons of depth at guard, and he may be a better pick than Spillman or others. Quietly had a great high school career, including 3 trips to Rupp), and went on to play at Austin-Peay.

Preston Knowles, George Rogers Clark (2007):

Not tons of depth at guard and he earned his way at Louisville. Maybe he would be a better answer if you look for help at the point.

  5. Information about Anderson County football field

Talked to one of my contacts last night. He said at the end of the season last year the field was a complete mess. It's a Bermuda field so the winter of course didn't do it any favors. He said he was on it last week and it was just horrible. With that said, he did not know and had not heard of the team not being able to use the field for games this fall...he also said if that turned out to be the case (not using the field) it wouldn't surprise him. He is trying to find some more info today what/if anything is certain. There has been nothing in the local paper and nothing on the school's website indicating any issues. My guess is the field will be used initially, and if it turns out it's unplayable/unsafe changes will be made then. I just can't fathom that they would not use the field without giving it a try first. There's also over a month before the first game, Aug 29th, so there is still time to work on the field. Both scrimmages they have scheduled are away, with GRC being their first scheduled home game the 29th.

Also, the Collins game is listed as a home game on Andersons schedule, not sure what Collins' schedule shows.

As for moving the middle school event, I was told moving middle school and freshman, even jv games off the field is not unusual since they have 4 teams using the same field and it can get chewed up pretty quickly. If the field is in bad shape right now, seems to make sense to probably do that.

    Great information.

I was told that GRCs field is in horrible shape too.

  7. I hope your visit goes well.

As always, as soon as I have the information I will pass along to BGP.

    Be patient young grasshopper.

My doctor and I had breakfast at Waffle House early this morning. Ribs are slightly bruised but fine. She suggested that I stay away from BGP for a while.

She has connections to the football program. Team is slowly putting the plays in. Nothing this July she said so she thinks that means no 7 on 7 games.

She did not know about scrimmages or offensive or defensive schemes. She did say that GRC hired a new trainer after Daniel Givens moved back to Ohio. He will be missed.

  8. Today is our sons birthday. I fixed on Saturday his favorites of crab legs, lobster tails, shrimp stuffed mushrooms, fresh green beans and a mixture of okra, tomato, onions and peppers with fresh herbs and baked potatoes. Tonight...his actual birthday I have grilled ribs, chicken tenders, and veal. Fixed fresh fried corn, tomatoes, onion, and cucumbers in a balsamic/honey and cilantro dressing, fresh green beans, cheese cake with fresh peach compote.

What do you fix for your special occasion meals?

    Sounds delicious.

    How old is your son?

  9. MNCN, I can say has been a long time GRC supportor in all sports. I will say he has a very busy schedule. I am sure the new coaching staff would give you the info . Will be looking for your updates.

    Game updates - yes

    Preseason updates - no

A first year coach should want to include the community.

  10. Collins' game vs. Anderson County is listed as a home game for Collins on their schedule. They played at Collins last year and should be at Anderson this year, so they may not be playing any home football games.

It could also be the beginning of a new contract. GRC played Scott County at home in the regular season the last 2 years. We also played Henry Clay and Montgomery County on the road the last 2 seasons.
