Don't think I would put Campbell County in 5A "D5". They would need to go into 5A "D6".
You're 100% correct. The problem was trying to balance 4 teams in each district and with only 11 Lville schools and 5 NKy schools, it made it difficult. I think Shelby probably fits better in with the LVille schools, but you still run into the 5 NKy teams with only 4 fitting in and Campbell would then have to switch into the east bracket. That may actually work better.
-
I believe Crittenden Co. and Metcalfe were in the same district together before the current realignment. Still a long way.
Thats correct. Metcalfe was in 1a region 1, district 2 with Crittenden, Mclean, Russellville & Hancock in the old 4 class alignment. My problem with them was trying to get some balance in each district and I placed them there due to the old way they were. Apparantly, the KHSAA had similar issues in the old alignment..

Lynn Camp and Williamsburg; would probably switch but other than that it looks good!
You're probably right. Wasn't exactly sure where Lynn Camp was, so, just based alot of it on the district teams they currently reside in.

I'm not so sure on some of the geographics, but, here's a possible 5 class alignment:

There would be 44 to 45 teams in each class with the largest class at 32. Feel free to comment. Like I said, some of the geographics may be a little off, so, if you see any teams that could be swapped, feel free..

Yeah, I could live with this. I still think any school with completely OPEN enrollment, public or private needs to be either bumped up a class or a multiplier used on their enrollment numbers for class purposes.
What public schools have open enrollment?
-
Sounds like these are going to be the main contenders:
West - Mayfield, Crittenden Co, Holy Cross
Central - Frankfort, Beechwood
SCentral - Campbellsville, Williamsburg, Lynn Camp
East - LCA, Raceland, Hazard

I was just looking at the current enrollment of the football playing schools in Ky...There are 212 teams...If they opted to go with a Super class of 20 teams, that would leave 48 teams in the other 4 classes...It would sure make the other 4 very competitive...Look at 1a, for example...Here's a sampling of what would be added there...
Russellville
Somerset
Bardstown
NCC
Middlesboro
Metcalfe Co
Murray
Talk about changing the landscape of things..Sure wouldn't be a 3 or 4 team race any longer...
Then look at the new 2a teams:
Belfry
Breathitt Co
Central
Russell
Henry Co
Sheldon Clark
2a wouldn't hurt any as they replace some quality teams with more quality teams...
3a would add these:
Lex Catholic
Boyle Co
Highlands
Bell Co
Warren East
Lone Oak
Cov Catholic
Bullitt East
Fairdale
Franklin Co
There's several other quality teams not mentioned...
4a would look alot like the current 5a with additional teams like..
Ryle
Meade Co
Boone Co
Marshall Co
Shelby Co
To me, every class would be alot more competitive. Would love to see it...

I know the KHSAA is considering making it mandatory that schools play in there actual classification that they're enrollment dictates. As far as CC and Highlands, I think it would be ashame if they had to play in different classes. There's also been talk of cutting back from 6 to 5 classes, so, if they did that, I'm not sure how that would shake out for them, especially, if they cut back on the teams in the highest class, like some have suggested might happen..
-
Central can definately be beat. A very mediocre Russellville team gave them a pretty good game and PT was far from the PT of old, last year. Yes, they beat Belfry, but, I believe the Pirates would love another shot and if they play there game and limit turnovers, could easily play with Central. They also lose a ton and who knows what the new kids will bring to the table. look for Russell and Mason Co to be back in the mix, as well..
-
Mayfield returns its top 2 RBs, it's best WR and 3 OLs on offense.. They'll have to replace there QB, TE, FB and a couple of linemen on offense. They have some nice skill kids coming up, so they should be able to do fine with the 1st 3 spots. The question is, can they come up with some solid OL players to offset there losses. They're a little thin there.
On defense, they have a solid returning corp in the secondary and a couple of DL back, but will have to fill the LB void left by Armstrong and Simpkins. Again, they have some good athletes coming up that should be fine there but they'll need to find a few more kids to help out on the interior, as they look to be pretty thin there or at least young.
-
Whats Franklin Co, Harrison Co & Marion Co got coming back? Those were 3 pretty solid teams last year...
-
Calloway in the top five? I don't see it. The Lakers weren't even a top-10 team last season. Teams like North Bullitt, Bullitt East and Boyle County may deserve a higher ranking at this point.
I agree..Calloway will likely be a Top 8-10 team, at best..
-
The topic of the thread is who wins 5A in 2008, not who may be a contender on the west side. I was just saying theyhad a lot of work to do to get to the top. Do you disagree with that?
I was responding to Blockbuster who stated that Hopkinsville and Christian Co would be better than Owensboro, so I only commented that they should be better because they were young and have some talent. I definately don't think Hopkinsville will win 5a, but they could be a team that could compete to get there, being that BG and Owens are down, so, no I don't disagree, but, if you can get there, stranger things have happened..Also, I wouldnt put much stock in what Highlands did to them last year, because they pretty much did that to everyone last year and was one of there better teams ever. Wouldn't you agree..
-
Hopkinsville visited Ft. Thomas this past season, and well they need to improve immensly to be put in a best in 5A conversation. I think it's either CovCath or Highlands at the top, with the Birds having a slight edge right now. Highlands loses a lot to graduation, but IMO they will have another very successful campaign in 08.
Noone put them in best of 5a conversation. My comment was that they were very young but had some talent and should be much improved and a contender on the west side of the bracket. God forbid anyone mention anyone but CC or Highlands. Shame on them..It's arrogance like that, that makes other people from other areas dislike them. I did, by the way, say CC and Highlands should contend for the east. Did I not?
-
Hop'Town will be alot better. They were extremely young last year, but that youth had some talent. BG will still be good, but, I think down some from the past few years. O'boro lost a strong Sr class and will be down a little from last year. The east should be a 2 team race between Highlands and Cov Catholic. Christian Co could be the best of the west. They have alot of talent, athleticism and several key returnees. I'm not real familiar with John Hardin, but, if I recall from several posters last year that this years team could be special..
-
Calloway will be good, but, I can't see them doing much against a Lex Cath or Bell Co. Warren East would most likely match up better but I don't think they could compete with LC either, Bell Co, possibly...
-
Large school football belongs to the Louisville schools but the rest of the respective classes belongs to Northern Kentucky by far.
Yeah..They dominate 3a and 4a...lol...I'll give them 5a...I definately think they have the strongest nucleus of teams...Actually 1a and 2a have 1 good team in the North, but, nothing else, so I wouldn't call the area the best based on 1 team..Central Ky is stronger overall in 1a & 2a..
-
If Mason plays like they did tonight against PT, they'll be going home earlier than expected, as they have the athleticism to keep up. With that said, I think Mason will come out more focused and ultimately move on, but, they will definately have to play better...
-
Miller will be a very tough matchup for PT but the Tornado is a complete team that doesn't rely on any 1 man to carry the load and imo, has a few more bigs who can do damage..I think Mason will ultimately prevail, but, it should be a very competitive game..
-
PT's going to be a tough out for anyone...Very athletic, pretty good size and a good mix of inside, outside scorers...Don't be surprised if they show up on Saturday...
-
I'll be the 1st to admit, I haven't kept up with UC much this year, but, wow, Vaughn is an absolute stud. That kid could play for me anytime. Big, strong guard who has an excellent handle with the ball and can kill you from the peremiter or beat you with the drive. I was very impressed with him. UC is young, too and have some good looking athletes. Looks like they lack some scoring punch to go along with Vaughn, but, they could be very tough these next couple of years with some solid recruits coming in. I also like the way Cronin(sp?) handles that team. They really could be a dangerous foe next year...
-
A healthy UK team at this point in the season would compete in the Big East. I don't think they would handle UL or GTown, but, I do feel they could play right with UConn, Notre Dame, Marquette and are slightly better than Syracuse and Pitt..I could see them in the 3 to 6 range, which is where they are in the SEC too...
-
Best case scenario is a 6 seed and that would put us in the 6-11 game and then against a 3-14 game, which is better than having a 2nd round against a 1 or 2 seed. Even if we win the SECT, I think it'll likely be a 7 seed, but would hope for a 6.. If we make the championship game and lose in the finals, I can see us as an 8-9 seed, which wouldn't be good..A loss in the semi's or 1st game would put us in as a 10-11..Hopefully, an 11, for the reasons mentioned above..
-
It's about time. I miss those Ft Campbell/Mayfield games from the 80s and early 90s. That'll be a test for the Cards, but, should matchup pretty well athletically. Even if they lose, I think games like that will only help them later in the season.. Are they still playing Marshall, Calloway and Caldwell? I know they're still playing Graves and Tilghman.. If so, that's 1 heck of a nondistrict schedule...
How would this 5 class alignment look?
in KY Football (High School)
Posted
For the 3a, I agree. If the KHSAA decided to go to this system, maybe they would allow Highlands and CC to play up to the 4a level and it work out a little better geographically.. I think the other 4 classes in NKy would be fine. Not alot of difference in the current alignment, especially in 1a, 2a and 5a. But, keep in mind, I put this together based solely on enrollment, so, I'm sure some tweaking would have to be done, no different than how it is now, really.
