  1. ^ Excellent point.... I agree 100% (that is why it was excellent..... ha ha).

Schools where players don't "BELIEVE" have the superstar syndrome....

Coaching factors into this equation too.

Yes kids today expect to be in the spot light because our school systems reward them for just coming to school. So yes they want the spotlight on themselves because we teach kids to be selfish and not to win as a team.

  2. I always thought it was funny...right up there with Marv Levy being credited for the innovative no huddle offense when Sam Wyche had Boomer running it well before the Bills did. As a matter of fact, Marv complained to the league office prior to the 1988 AFC title game that it gave the offense an unfair advantage. Funny how that happens...one person develops something and another person takes credit for it...

Russell did not develop the wing T, but they do it well. Some people take an offense and use different ways and techniques and call it their own. I don't think Mumme ran a true no-huddle. I see Catholic looking at their bands everytime Coach Edge calls a play. I have also witnessed in practice that it does not take up time for correcting routes blocking assignments. They have the bands during practice and use them for practice. I think it is a great way to keep the kids constantly moving. I hardly see any down time except maybe the Freshmen practice or Special Teams.

  3. Russell did a pretty good job of stopping the Tony Franklin system last December...:fire:

Russell's Offense/Special Teams was the key. Onside kick to set up a score and blocked punt to set up a scoring drive Keeping the O'Cath offense off the field and not letting them sustain drives. Catholic still had over 350 yards of offense, but the bottom line is they did not have more points then Russell. Russell defense did not stop this offense.

Belfry did a good job too, but got tired and that is when Catholic almost pulled it off against them.

  4. I wouldn't say you need a talented bunch of kids to win games. I don't see alot of colleges knockin' on Catholic's door to recruit kids. Yes, Catholic had Barnard, but had slow WR that could run good routes and catch every ball. That year the only kid being recruited was Barnard. I think you need a TEAM that understands the offense and believes in it. Catholic plays hard and they get alot out of kids when they got a new coach, he implemented this offense. The previous year they lost around 18 starters. When Catholic got beat by E-town in 2003, Catholic was more talented then them, but I think the no-huddle wore them out.

  5. Belfry #6, Russell #7, in 2A and behind Breathitt, Middlesboro, and Larue County..... IMO these are the top two teams in the class this year along with Mercer County and there is a huge dropoff to the second tier which is headed up by Western.

Ashland Blazer also is alot better than the #20 team in AAA.

    Orison-

This rating system is not accurate it never is.... You Russell team or Belfry will be in the championship game against Mercer County or by some miracle a Region 1 team. Catholic last year wasn't even in the top 10 in AA in Lit ratings and they made it two years in a row. Don't go by this thank God the game is settled on the field.

  6. I would love for Henderson to play Reitz. I believe Hart is one of the best coaches in the state of Indiana. Catholic definitely picked their toughest game for their first.

I think they are scheduled to play Ohio Co. and Bowling Green for Scrimmages. I don't know what they are thinking, but when I talked to the coach he said he wanted a tough schedule to make the program better. I like that....but it could be trouble early on for Catholic next year too. WHO KNOWS or whatelse is new.

  7. I've posted these before, but here is a look at Mercer's Indoor facility. Keep in mind these pictures are taken from the second story running track.

Comparing Corbin's facility to Mercer's is hard, because Mercer's has better outfitting due to the fact that it is newer. The turf is better, the weight room much better and so on. Corbin's is still incredible, just a little older.

Mercer should never lose in 2A or 5A in 2007. NO EXCUSES!!!

  8. I understand your point. Several posts back someone said it will be won in the trenches. I totally agree with that. Until Russell shows me that they can block and start smacking people in the mouth I will go with the #1 team and that is Mercer. I call it like I see it. Nothing wrong with being pumped up. If your line is suspect you will not win.

I believe in my Red Devils. I am confident that they will either smash people in the mouth or take it in the mouth. They don't like being smacked in the mouth. You cannot and will not win a championship without linemen that are hungry, mean, and play each and every down 100%. These Red Devils know what happens when you meet up with a team line Belfry and the linemen push you all over the field like they did in 2004. I have all the confidence in the world that the front six will rise to the occation. I am totally convinced that the most physical team will be eating pizza in Louisville. It may be Mercer, Belfry, Newport, Russell, Breathitt, or anyone else.

This is why I love this game so much. I

    Jeep-

Owensboro Catholic was not the favorite to win State in 2005. After they beat Ft.Campbell they were, but what about Belfry a team that won 2 in a row. Remember everyone saying Belfry vs. Ft.Campbell. My point is Catholic wasn't favored until they got their and Russell beat them like a drum in the game. You are right the real No.1 comes out at the end of Friday Afternoon game at Papa John's

  9. Owensboro, Apollo, and O Cath are all on a bye week. I think this is good for Apollo in that they struggled against Dc and could use it to refocus. Catholic was starting to play at a high level and might have preferred to keep rolling. They will need to practice hard though as the long trip to Tompkinsville is in two weeks against a solid Monroe County. Owensboro would probably just like to get out on the field, they will have two consecutive Fridays with no games with the Male game getting cancelled.

Daviess Co. 24 Ohio Co. 21 I think Dc comes away with a victory in this one. They played better against Apollo and Ohio Co. is really not that good. I expect a close game the whole way and a field goal late to decide it.

Henderson Co. 49 Grayson 7 Henderson will be way too much for Grayson.

I think O'Cath bye week couldn't come at a better time. 2 weeks to prepare for Monroe County will be great since they are solid.

  10. Mercer should win it since they are a 4A schools playing in 2A but I don't think they are 30 points better than the top teams.

They will be 5-A next year and yes they will beat anybody in 2-A by 30. Sorry Russell won't win the championship and I know my Catholic team won't even be at Papa John's this year. Just one of them things and Mercer is just that good this year. Who Knows? I think the only chance Russell or Belfry has is if Catholic or someother 2-A west team miraculously beats them. Doubtful though, although it was doubtful last year that O'Cath was going to be Ft.Campbell... Again Who Knows?

  11. Devils are loaded in backfield ... games will be won or lost on the lines ... Devils had experience and muscle last year ... not much size .. the key to this year will be developement of both lines ...

Devils loaded indeed, but Mercer COunty has about 7 backs that (if taken from Mercer) would be the starting RB for the top 7 2-A schools.

  12. Same here. Mercer left it all on the field last year against Russell. It would be interesting to see how Ivan and Jaggers adjust to what the other is doing. If they play each other in the finals it would have to be one of the better games that weekend. I believe between those two teams they would heat up a cold december day.

You know as well as I do that Mercer County should beat Russell, Belfry, Catholic, Newport, or anyother 2-A school by 30 on a bad night. When you have 900 kids in the school and will be 5-A next year you should win. If they don't you need another coach. With Jaggers track record and the success he has had I don't see him losing a game or anyone coming within 30 points of him.

  13. Well then I could be wrong. I was just going by the KHSAA website. But still 3-3 is not a stellar record either.

3-3 is not stellar, but when your 3 teams win/loss record is 17-2. 2 of the losses were 2 top ten 4-A schools. I think O'Cath plays some good competition then people think. When they got their WR, RB and 2 DT's back it made a difference. I told you when they get in their district and when they get in the playoffs they will make some noise and with key people back it makes a difference.

    SHAKE AND BAKE!!!!

"If you ain't first your last"

  14. I would worry more about Russell and Belfry than anyone else right now. 3 state championships in the last 3 years. You can't possibly overlook them.

OC is 2-4 right now. Not having a stellar year so far. Russell is 4-1 and Belfry is 5-1 with both teams losses coming from AAA Ashland. Russell is looking at a possible 9-1 season as it stands now. I can't speak for Belfry because I know nothing of their district. But I suspect they will at least go 8-2.

Catholic is not 2-4. I thought they were 3-3. I think the khsaa website was wrong.

    Wins Loses

    Daviess Co. S.Spencer

    Butler OHS

    Todd Apollo

  15. I just don't know a whole lot about Male this year. I figured they were pretty good because they always are. OHS has a solid defense and they will probably give up more than they have given up all year but I do believe in that defense. IMO the offense can do enough to make OHS a very dangerous team.

About OCath I couldn't agree more. They looked bad against good competition but my hope is that the game will come a little easier because of that brutal beginning of the year. I agree the Aces won't play the level of competition they played at the beginning of the year unitl later in the playoffs.

    Rafter-

i don't think they looked bad against Apollo (5-0) they played well without Neil Holland and with Stewart Ijames return.

They have delt with alot of injuries you don't know about. Now against South Spencer there was no run game and no tackling, against OHS there was alot of hitting, but it wasn't the Aces.

  16. STRONGLY disagree.....

in both Belfry championship seasons the Pirates definately faced more challenges on their schedule than meets the eye. In 2003 Prestonsburg was arguably one of the top 5 2A teams in the state, they also defeated a solid Pikeville team, and squeeked by 3A Lawrence County. In the playoffs the Pirate had to hit the road at a VERY good Middlesboro and Lloyd before defeating an Etown team that produced 6 D-1 prospects.

In 2004 Belfry had to replace nearly their entire O and D line... that year they defeated WITHOUT a doubt in my mind the second best 2A team in the state P-burg twice, as well as a Russell team who would have also defeated O'Cath in the state finals, and Pikeville.

Let alone in both of these season's they played Ironton who would have won the state title in AA both years by at least 2 TD's

I wish merecer the best of luck and hope they make it to the carpet because I truly feel they will be the best representative to represent their semi-state and the best matchup (entertainment wise) for either Belfry or Russell (barring they make it).... I am personally tired of watching the State AA Championship have to be determined either in the quarterfinals of region 4 or the eastern semi-state!

I keep looking back and seeing Ft.Campbell as everyone's favorite in 2004 and 2005. I believe the best teams in AA are in Region 3 and 4, but what 4-A Region 4 school make it to state? What Region 4 3-A schools make it to state? What Region 4 1-A schools make it to state? Don't say Lex.Cath is a Eastern school, but go by regions. DOn't say Beechwood or Newport Cath. because both schools are Region 3 and Northern Schools.

Right now 2-A is dominated by Region 3 and especially Region 4 with Belfry the past couple of years. IT is just like St.X and Trinity in 4-A, but now they are separting them and making them play in the 3rd Round of the playoffs. So is that fair ORISONSPI? You just said it wasn't fair for 2-A Champs to be determined in Semi State. I want your answer.

Look over the years Region 1 has done a horrible job in the championship, but Region 2 and 3 are dominating 1A, 3A and 4A. 2-A is dominated by Region 3 and 4 now. I will also say Mayfield has won some 1-A state championships and will admit that other than last year when they make it to the championship they have won or represented the Region well.

I will also say it was a Miracle for O'Cath to make it in 2004 to Papa John's, but they beat a good Corbin team at Corbin.

  17. Disagree. Western can match Mercer's speed, but not even close on physicality and depth. Mercer would beat them by 2 TDs.

The thing about Mercer is high expectations...If they can't handle it then you got a chance and you have to hit them in the mouth first (easier said than done). That is your only chance.
