  1. Just not in 2001 ...

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

    :irked: :p ( )

You've been in SOME mood the last few days !! This good-natured (I assume) jabbing is a side of you I've not seen often. Did you win the Lottery, or something ?? (If so...we're buddies, right ?)

    :sssh: :D

  2. Who is making that argument? I bet the St. Xavier guys would take a couple of more losses right now for a ring.

That being said, it's an entirely plausible and defendable position to say that St. Xavier had the better team. Upsets happen ... even in the state finals.

    :thumb: :thumb:

  3. Geez, guys...

Hasn't everyone agreed at some point that "the better team doesn't always win" ??

Each of the 4 winners in their title games proved only one thing...they played better ball than an opponent each week throughout the playoffs when it really counted.

  4. I agree with a lot of what you say...only thing I would add is more parity doesn't necessarily mean better (as too which state is superior), and also Tennessee is definitely more football oriented, but Kentucky seems to have closed the gap somewhat in the last few years.

It all comes down to your particular definition of "parity" and the fact TN is roughly twice more populated.

Looking at it from a "winning football" perspective...

The best TN team should beat the best KY team two out of three years.

    From an "average wins" perspective...

The mid-level teams from each state would be roughly equivalent.

    From the "losing football" perspective...

The worst TN team should lose to the worst KY team two out of three years.

  5. I wonder if oneijoe has a cousin in Tennessee that's valiantly defending the honor of 3A and 5A ...

It's hard to compare A in both states, because the enrollment cutoffs are different. There are some 2A programs in Tennessee (Alcoa, Goodpasture and Huntington) that would be A in Kentucky and would likely tip it the other way.

    :p

(there's a lot more of me than you think... ;) )

  6. I would love to see a QB would could REALLY run the wishbone to the utmost. Belfry has been sucessful without a really talented player at QB for a long time. As a fan, I can't help but wonder what could be achieved with a kid like Trevor Compton or Chase Huffman under the helm of the triple option attack. It would be scary!

Yeah, Compton or Huffman would have run the wishbone or veer-option at Belfry very well (then again, in '03 and '04 almost any competent ball-handler would have looked good with Howard and Jones). Too bad the two QB's weren't raised in Mingo Co.. :p:D

The one problem Trev would have had...he was VERY right-handed. He had big trouble with the left-handed pitch. LOL...this was a big reason P-burg used the wishbone sparingly in '04. It was a dead-givaway we were likely going to the right side.

  7. I didn't say the west was "much better" than the east. I simply said Fort Campbell was the best team in the west, but didn't make it to Louisville.

    True...but, you also said :

"I won't argue with that premise, although this is the first year in some time that I felt the west side of 2A was better than the east half."

(just a friendly reminder of your words, westsider... if things were reversed, you'd do the same for me... ;) )

  8. Im from Belfry and I consider Williamson to be my hometown as much as Belfry. It all runs together.

    OneIJoe,

Proximity is a beautiful thing isn't it? I for one welcome any student who choses to come to Belfry for a good education.

Offering some edumacation to those po' Mingo Co. young 'uns is to be admired... ABSOLUTELY heartwarming !!

    ROFLMAO !!! you're priceless, CFJ !! ;)

    :D:p

  9. I don't think you can judge the entire west based on two or three games at the state finals. Anybody that has seen Bowling Green this year knows they had an uncharacteristically bad performance at the worst possible time. Owensboro Catholic and Mayfield simply ran into better teams.

In any case, our side didn't make much of a showing ...

Change a select few words and this is something I could have written after the '01 season...

    ;)

  10. Trinity

    St.X

    Lex Cath

    Russell

    NCC

    Bowling Green

    Ocath

    Maysfield

This is also how I see it... :thumb:

    (I guess it's just about what one would expect, too: 4A winner, 4A runner-up, 3A winner, 2A winner, 1A winner, 3A runner-up, 2A runner-up, 1A runner-up)

  11. well except Belfry and Prestonsburg. They can throw a rock into West Virginia.

LOL... Russell's a lot closer to WV than Prestonsburg. Belfry, OTOH, is extremely close to the line (and they've enjoyed the benefits thereof :p ).

The closest P-burg gets to the WV line is through Louisa (about 45 mins. away to the northeast). ;)

  12. joe,

For a fan of an individual team this probably is better, for a fan of the event, this stinks. And... the Sweet 16 is a huge success because the masses are fans of the event, and not individual teams.

    Big picture people!

Well, guru... I guess it depends on whether one HAS to work/to go school on Friday (or, if you can't be working while at the game like, say, a media person or even a photographer... :p )

I'm a pretty big football fan (figuratively and literally :sssh: ). Yet, work must come first.

The net result of the format change for me is... I can now get to ALL the games if I choose without doubling my work schedule elsewhere.

Oh, one of the bigger reasons the "Sweet 16" is a huge success is because many schools conveniently cancel class or schedule in-service Thursday and Friday at the tourney's start. IMO, an ideal first step in making the football State Finals an "event" would be to arrange time off from school in a similar manner.

Another reason the basketball tourney is so popular is that it takes place indoors and out of the cold. Football in December is a cold proposition. Of course, it can't be helped. Yet the difference remains.

    :bunny:

  13. If there was ever something that proves that "you can't make everyone happy", this is it...

Personally, I think the new setup is as ideal as possible. The players/parents/fans most likely involved in the 4A game (2 of the "Big 3") have the shortest drive, so it makes sense to put them on Friday after school/work.

The other class games benefit from being on Saturday because it becomes doable to get to Louisville.

The city's hotels ought to LOVE the new setup !!

  14. The ONLY problem with the PCB, in my opinion, is one of the 3 county schools in AAD8 has to open up the season with a district game. Every district game means a lot to those 3 schools and it sucks that they have to play one so early.

I've wondered why the same-district schools that play in the PCB don't just play twice. They could designate the second game later on as the "district game". I don't think there's anything in KHSAA rules against doing so.
